Political tensions between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have deepened as Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) entered the second phase of its elections. Despite several rounds of negotiations, the two coalition partners failed to resolve their dispute over the first phase of polling.

The second phase of the elections is being held in nine constituencies of Muzaffarabad division and all 12 refugee constituencies. Authorities have made extensive security arrangements to ensure peaceful polling, while political uncertainty continues to dominate the electoral process.

The disagreement began after the first phase of elections in Mirpur, where the PML-N secured key victories. The PPP questioned the election results and alleged irregularities in several constituencies. The PML-N rejected the allegations and insisted that the elections reflected the public mandate.

The dispute has led to an exchange of sharp political statements between leaders of both parties. Senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah criticized PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for repeatedly raising allegations of election rigging. He questioned the basis of such claims and also referred to the election of President Asif Ali Zardari while responding to the PPP’s criticism of the 2024 general elections.

Rana Sanaullah also commented on Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s recent remarks regarding the country’s governance system and the debate over creating new provinces. He criticized the minister’s statements and questioned his political rise.

Meanwhile, PPP leader Saeed Ghani strongly defended his party during a press conference. He claimed that the PPP had never formed a government through election manipulation. He alleged that the PML-N had repeatedly benefited from controversial election outcomes and accused its leadership of making baseless allegations against the PPP.

In an effort to reduce tensions, senior representatives from both parties held several meetings over the past few days. The discussions focused on finding a legal and political solution to the dispute over the election results.

According to party sources, the PPP initially challenged the results in four constituencies. It later withdrew objections in two constituencies but continued to demand action regarding Charhoi and Nakyal, where its candidates were defeated by PML-N nominees.

During the negotiations, PML-N representatives maintained that any irregularities were isolated incidents rather than evidence of systematic rigging. They argued that such incidents had occurred in previous elections and should not be used to question the overall electoral process.

The talks, however, failed to produce a final agreement. As a result, political tensions remained high ahead of the second phase of voting.

Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met PML-N President Nawaz Sharif at Jati Umra to review the evolving political situation. The meeting focused on the party’s strategy and the growing dispute with the PPP over the AJK elections. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also attended the consultation.

The participants reviewed the political challenges facing the ruling coalition and discussed possible steps to prevent further escalation between the two allied parties.

In another development, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said he had received a positive response to his proposal for establishing a truth and reconciliation commission in Azad Kashmir. He described the response as encouraging and said the proposal had also received support from the AJK Legislative Assembly.

Bilawal said he would carefully review the suggestions before consulting AJK Prime Minister Raja Faisal Mumtaz Rathore. He added that discussions would also be held with the federal government and other stakeholders to determine whether a consensus could be reached on the proposed commission.

The surge into burgers reflects broader changes in Chinese consumer habits. As households shrink and economic uncertainty keeps spending cautious, diners increasingly favor lower cost, portable meals that deliver convenience without sacrificing value. That shift has transformed burgers from a niche Western import long dominated by McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King into one of the most fiercely contested segments of China’s restaurant industry, drawing a wave of new entrants eager to capture market share. Last month, hotpot chain Haidilao entered the space with a new concept called Huanxianbao, or Fresh Burger, which sells burgers alongside pizza, pasta and fried chicken. Coffee chain M Stand has also opened burger focused locations in several cities. China’s Western style fast food market was valued at 499.65 billion yuan, or about $74.1 billion, in 2025 and is projected to reach 587.09 billion yuan by 2027, according to data provider iiMedia Research, even as several global brands face broader challenges in the market. Burgers ranked as the top preference among consumers surveyed, with 55 percent selecting the category. While still a relatively small slice of China’s overall fast food industry, the burger segment alone was worth $18.4 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow 8.7 percent annually through 2035, according to Emergen Research. Part of the category’s appeal lies in simple economics. Food industry analyst Zhu Danpeng said burgers offer a lower cost alternative to full service restaurant meals while still functioning as a substantial meal, calling them a strong value for money option amid cautious consumer spending. Wang Fang, a university student in Beijing, said burgers have become a default lunch choice for her and her classmates because they cost less than ordering several dishes at a sit down restaurant. She said a burger loaded with meat, vegetables and butter makes for an affordable, balanced meal. The category’s rise also tracks with shifting demographics. Growing numbers of single person households, smaller families and young urban professionals have driven demand for convenient meals sized for one, a trend Yum China says is opening opportunities across its brand portfolio. Pizza Hut added burgers to its menu in 2024, and by 2025 the category accounted for a mid single digit percentage of Pizza Hut’s total sales in China, the company said. Yum China expects burgers to generate more than 1 billion yuan in sales this year, representing 5 to 6 percent of the brand’s revenue. The company said burgers resonate strongly with takeaway and delivery customers in China, where 43 percent of consumers order delivery at least once a week, compared with a global average of 23 percent, according to Euromonitor. The growing appetite for burgers has drawn competitors from across the industry. Domestic chains such as Tasiting now compete directly with McDonald’s, Yum China’s KFC and Shake Shack for market share. International brands are eager to join the competition as well. When US chain Five Guys opened its first stores in Beijing this month, customers waited more than two hours to be served. Wendy’s said in May that it plans to enter the Chinese market and open as many as 1,000 franchised restaurants over the next decade. Liu Tao, a 48 year old musician in Beijing, regularly takes his 11 year old son to McDonald’s on Sundays, fitting the meal into a tight schedule between the boy’s math and English classes. He said burgers work well when time is short and he needs food that feels clean, quick and won’t bore his son, noting that his son often eats in the car on the way to his next class.

The order maintains an earlier district court ruling by Judge Richard Leon, which blocked aboveground work on the ballroom while permitting underground construction to proceed for bunker and national security facilities. ​The panel granted a 14-day stay on its ruling, allowing the Justice Department time to file an emergency petition with the US Supreme Court. ​President Trump strongly criticized the decision on social media, describing it as “horrendous, politically motivated, and unlawful”. According to the ministry, discussions also covered measures to strengthen foreign exchange reserves and improve Pakistan’s credit profile. Opportunities for greater investment by US financial institutions in Pakistan were reviewed. Cooperation in key sectors, including ports, logistics, energy and telecommunications, also came under discussion. The two sides explored potential collaboration in digital technology and artificial intelligence. Aurangzeb said significant progress had been made in negotiations on a bilateral trade framework between Pakistan and the United States. He said the government was working to create a more favourable environment for private-sector investment. The finance minister welcomed the interest of US companies and investors in Pakistan. He said the government was continuing reforms aimed at improving the business and investment climate. Aurangzeb also briefed the US chargé d’affaires on Pakistan’s new system for daily adjustments in petroleum product prices. He explained that the mechanism was designed to align domestic prices more closely with developments in the international market. He said the government’s priorities included maintaining fiscal discipline, strengthening foreign exchange reserves and increasing exports. He added that reforms were underway to improve economic stability and attract investment. Natalie Baker appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to manage its economic situation during a period of regional tensions. She also praised the country for maintaining economic and financial stability despite rising energy prices.

    LAHORE: The family of the late Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, a distinguished physicist and an unsung hero of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, has donated Rs14 million to establish 14 golden scholarships at Government College University (GCU) Lahore. According to details, the endowment will fund 14 scholarships, worth Rs1 million each, for BS and MPhil students at the university’s Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics (CASP) and Department of Economics. The scholarships were sponsored by Mr. Rizwan-ul-Haque Rana and his family to honour his brother, Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, who devoted his 60-year career to teaching and research at GCU-CASP. Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, who passed away on Nov 23, 2023, completed his MSc in Physics from GC Lahore in 1962. He was a direct student of Prof. Dr. Rafi Muhammad Chaudhary, the founder of CASP and widely regarded as the father of nuclear physics in Pakistan. Prof. Faizan played a pivotal role in training 45 Old Ravians who were part of the 150-member expert team that launched Pakistan’s atomic programme on May 28, 1998. He also prepared the PC-1 for the installation of a second Pelletron Accelerator at CASP in 2009. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Omer Chaudhry commended the family’s philanthropy, stating: “Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq’s legacy goes beyond his immense scientific contributions; it lives on in the generations of students he mentored. This generous endowment ensures that his mission of empowering young scholars will continue uninterrupted. We are deeply grateful to Mr. Rizwan-ul-Haque Rana and Mrs. Eloisa Rana for this noble cause, which will profoundly support our talented students in CASP.” The scholarships at GCU Lahore have been categorised into the Prof. Faizan Ul Haq Golden Scholarship, the Shah Begum & Ghulam Dastgir Golden Scholarship, and the Mr. Rizwan Ul Haque Rana & Mrs. Eloisa Rana Golden Scholarship. In addition to the endowment at GCU Lahore, the family has also established six golden scholarships, backed by a Rs6 million endowment, for physics students at Government College Women University (GCWU) Sialkot. Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir, former GCU Vice Chancellor and current Vice Chancellor of GCWU Sialkot, said Prof. Faizan believed in combining theoretical physics with real hands-on experience, training students in techniques ranging from glass blowing and spot welding to fabricating nuclear detectors. “He was an unsung hero who produced skilled, trained, talented, and well-groomed students,” Dr. Bashir stated. “This tremendous contribution to such a noble cause confirms that his good work will continue shaping the futures of thousands of students.”
