Punjab approves Sports Action Plan for schools, Rs. 500,000 prize announced

LAHORE: Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has approved a comprehensive “Sports Action Plan” to promote sports activities in schools across the province.

The provincial education minister described the initiative as an important step for the educational and physical development of students. He said that linking sports with education would promote healthy competition, teamwork and discipline among students.

Under the plan, major sports competitions will be held in schools across Punjab from October to December 2026 providing students with opportunities to showcase their talents.

The prize money for students who perform exceptionally well has also been increased under the Sports Action Plan. The student securing first position will receive Rs. 500,000, the second-position holder will receive Rs. 300,000 while the student securing third position will receive a cash prize of Rs. 100,000.

Rana Sikandar Hayat directed the relevant authorities to provide quality facilities to students participating in sports and stressed that no compromise should be made on the quality of sports kits.

According to Education Department officials, the initiative aims to encourage students to actively participate in sports alongside their academic activities. Sports will help promote teamwork, discipline, healthy competition and leadership skills among students while also providing an opportunity to identify talented athletes.

“This initiative will play an important role in promoting sports culture in Punjab schools,” an education department official stated.

The campaign is being shared under the hashtags #PunjabEducation #SchoolSports #SportsActionPlan #RanaSikandarHayat, with the slogan: “Khelein Gay To Aage Barhein Gay” – Play and You Will Progress.

The Education Department has not yet released further details regarding the venues of the competitions or the criteria for selecting students. The schedule for district-level sports competitions is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

In terms of district-wise performance, Muzaffar garh secured the first position, followed by Kot Addu in second, Layyah in third, Taunsa in fourth, Dera Ghazi Khan in fifth, and Rajan pur in sixth place.

    Islamabad police receive 30 new vehicles after 14 …

    The Islamabad Police has received 30 new vehicles for 27 police stations in the federal capital after a gap of 14 years, in a move aimed at improving police mobility and reducing emergency response times. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry handed over the vehicle keys to police officials during a ceremony at Police Lines on Saturday. Speaking at the ceremony, Naqvi said modern policing could not be achieved without providing police with functional and adequate transport. He said the newly provided vehicles would help officers respond to emergencies more quickly and perform their duties more effectively. The interior minister said the government was making efforts to provide Islamabad Police with the resources required to improve public safety and maintain security in the capital. He also said work was underway on the construction and upgrading of police stations across Islamabad. According to him, the projects would be completed soon and would improve the working environment and operational capacity of the force. Naqvi highlighted the inclusion of electric vehicles in the government’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly policies. He said the use of electric vehicles would also help reduce expenditure on petroleum products. Tallal Chaudhry said the new vehicles had been distributed among all 27 police stations in Islamabad. He pointed out that police personnel had previously been operating vehicles that were around 14 years old, creating difficulties for effective field operations. The minister of state said rehabilitation and construction work at the capital’s 27 police stations was also in progress and was expected to be completed by the end of the year. He further disclosed that around 9,000 new personnel were being recruited to address the shortage of manpower in Islamabad Police. He said the recruitment process would be conducted strictly on merit.

Speaking at the meeting, Federal Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the proposed auto zone would cover approximately 150 acres at Port Qasim. He said the project was expected to generate around $500 million in annual exports, while contributing approximately $200 million in foreign exchange earnings each year According to the minister, the auto zone will provide a range of facilities linked to the automotive industry. These will include refurbishment facilities, display areas and spare-parts services. The development is expected to support businesses involved in the import, refurbishment and export of automotive products and components. The minister said the project would create new export opportunities for Pakistan’s automotive sector and help the country strengthen its position in international markets. He described the proposed auto zone as an integrated framework that would bring together automobile imports, refurbishment and exports at a single location. The initiative is also expected to encourage greater investment in the automotive sector by providing businesses with dedicated infrastructure and facilities. By bringing different stages of automotive-related activities together, the project could help improve efficiency and create opportunities for companies seeking to expand their operations in Pakistan. Port Qasim’s strategic importance as one of Pakistan’s major ports could further support the project. The location provides access to maritime transportation and international trade routes, potentially making it easier for automotive businesses to handle imported vehicles, spare parts and other related products before exporting refurbished or finished products to overseas markets. The government expects the auto zone to contribute to the country’s broader efforts to increase exports and generate foreign exchange. Pakistan has been seeking new avenues to expand its export base and reduce pressure on its foreign exchange reserves. In this context, the proposed automotive zone could provide a platform for developing value-added activities rather than relying solely on the import and sale of automotive products. The training programme provides practical instruction in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Graphic Designing, and Video Editing, enabling participants to develop market-oriented skills, strengthen their creativity, and explore opportunities in freelancing, entrepreneurship, and the digital economy. Director Youth Affairs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Abbas Khan Afridi said the initiative reflects the provincial government’s commitment to investing in the potential of young people and preparing them for the evolving demands of the digital age. “Our objective is to ensure that the youth of the Tribal Districts have access to modern skills that can help them secure sustainable livelihoods and compete in national and international markets. Digital empowerment is essential for building a prosperous and self-reliant generation,” he said. He said the Directorate of Youth Affairs would continue collaborating with partner organisations to expand access to quality training programmes and create meaningful opportunities for youth across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
