Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja has denied any known connection between the party and the man who was killed during a security incident in Rawalpindi, saying the party does not know which group the deceased belonged to or what actions he may have been involved in.

Speaking about the incident, Raja said PTI was a peaceful political party and strongly opposed terrorism. He stressed that the party had never had any connection with terrorist activity and was pursuing its political struggle within the framework of the Constitution and law.

“We do not know which group the man who was killed in Rawalpindi belonged to or what his actions were,” Raja said, according to reports.

His comments came after a man was killed following an incident involving gunfire at security personnel on Mall Road in Rawalpindi. Police said a suspect opened fire on security forces, injuring a member of a patrol team before the suspect was killed.

The incident has sparked a political dispute over the identity and political affiliation of the deceased.

PTI leader Shafi Jan separately claimed that the man killed on Mall Road was a PTI worker. The claim contrasts with Raja’s statement that he did not know which group the deceased belonged to. The differing statements have added to questions surrounding the man’s identity and alleged activities.

Raja also rejected any suggestion that PTI was involved in violent activity, saying the party was committed to pursuing its political objectives through constitutional and legal means.

On the possibility of negotiations with the government, the PTI secretary general said there was currently no government offer on the table. However, he maintained that the party had never rejected negotiations on principle.

Raja was also questioned about PTI Senator Shumail Yousafzai. He explained that she had not been removed from the party because the leadership did not want to create further divisions within PTI. He claimed that Yousafzai was not acting alone and had a group of people supporting her.

Meanwhile, the Rawalpindi incident has become part of a broader political debate over security, terrorism and the role of political parties in Pakistan. Government officials and opposition figures have offered sharply different interpretations of PTI’s political conduct.

The conflicting claims regarding the deceased man’s affiliation are likely to keep the issue in the spotlight as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the Rawalpindi shooting and determine the identity and background of the person who was killed.

Sources familiar with the matter said that after the transfer, Justice Sattar did not apply for or obtain an official residence in Peshawar. Instead, he reportedly decided to continue staying in the government house allotted to him in Islamabad. The notice highlights that the cancellation of the residence allotment was carried out by the Estate Office, making the continued occupation of the house subject to the expiry of the notice period. The registrar’s office formally communicated the decision to ensure compliance with the applicable administrative procedures. The development comes as part of the routine administrative process that follows the transfer of judges between high courts. Under the existing rules, official accommodation is generally linked to the judge’s place of posting, and transferred judges are required to vacate residences allocated at their previous station once the prescribed notice period expires.

    33 Pakistanis win fully funded UK scholarships

    Thirty-three Pakistani scholars are set to pursue fully funded postgraduate studies at universities across the United Kingdom under the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes. The scholars were selected for their academic performance, leadership abilities and commitment to contributing to society. They will enrol in master’s and other postgraduate programmes in fields considered important for Pakistan’s development. Their areas of study include global health, education, governance, human rights, media and development, climate action, development economics, business, diplomacy, innovation and entrepreneurship, and biological robotics. The scholars will study at universities in several UK cities, including London, Bristol, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The British High Commission in Islamabad hosted a pre-departure reception for the selected scholars. During the event, they were briefed on academic life, living arrangements and other aspects of studying in the UK. British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott said the scholarship programmes were a strong example of cooperation between Pakistan and the United Kingdom. She said the programmes support talented individuals with leadership potential and a desire to contribute to positive change. Marriott expressed hope that the scholars would return to Pakistan with new knowledge, professional networks and ideas that could contribute to the country’s development. The British High Commission said the latest group represents the diversity of Pakistan’s talent. The scholars come from different regions and professional backgrounds. The commission also highlighted the growing participation of Pakistani women in the scholarship programmes. After completing their studies, the scholars will join an expanding alumni community in Pakistan. According to the High Commission, the country has nearly 2,000 Chevening alumni and more than 1,500 Commonwealth alumni. The alumni are working in a wide range of sectors, including education, health, governance, business, climate action and civil society. The British High Commission said it was working with Pakistani partners to create additional scholarship opportunities in areas linked to national priorities. Previous collaborations have helped increase access to UK education in fields such as heritage, climate studies, sports and business.

    Students protest Cambridge exam leaks

    ISLAMABAD: Accountability4Cambridge has called for a student protest against Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) over alleged examination paper leaks during the 2026 examination cycle, saying the incidents have raised serious concerns about fairness and the credibility of Cambridge examinations. The student group said reports of leaked papers emerged in 2024 and increased in 2025, but Cambridge failed to provide sufficient public explanations or demonstrate that it had effectively strengthened its examination security system. According to Accountability4Cambridge, leaked material from several major papers circulated before scheduled examination times in 2026. The group compiled evidence from 17 alleged cases, including screen recordings showing time-zone information that it says established that the material was available before the relevant examinations. Cambridge recognised four cases and took action, but the students say the remaining evidence was not adequately addressed. The group raised the issue before the Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training on May 18 and again on June 16. Following the meetings, a sub-committee comprising IBCC, Cambridge, Accountability4Cambridge, the British Council, the Ministry of Education and NCCIA was formed. During a July 13 meeting, the students presented the 17 recordings and asked Cambridge to respond. After Cambridge questioned the reliability of the videos, Accountability4Cambridge sought forensic verification from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). The group said NCCIA’s report, received on July 29, found no evidence of tampering in the submitted recordings. Accountability4Cambridge subsequently requested another sub-committee meeting to present the forensic findings. The meeting was initially scheduled for August 7 but was postponed to August 12 after Cambridge said it was unavailable. The students have also criticised Cambridge’s decision to use S1 paper marks instead of assessed marks. They argue that using compromised papers for grading could unfairly benefit students who accessed leaked material while disadvantaging those who did not. Accountability4Cambridge is demanding reversal of the S1 marking decision, lower grade thresholds for Computer Science and Mathematics, recognition of additional leaks supported by forensic evidence, publication of a detailed investigation report and a transparent mechanism for handling compromised examinations. The group has also urged schools to demand greater accountability from Cambridge. Founder Samaak Iqbal Malik said the dispute concerns the integrity of the entire examination system rather than a few individual papers. The organisation has announced a student demonstration outside the IBCC office in G-10, Islamabad, at 1pm on Wednesday, August 12, calling for immediate action before the controversy further affects students’ academic futures.

  • Late GCU physicist’s family endows Rs14m for scholarships

    LAHORE: The family of the late Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, a distinguished physicist and an unsung hero of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, has donated Rs14 million to establish 14 golden scholarships at Government College University (GCU) Lahore. According to details, the endowment will fund 14 scholarships, worth Rs1 million each, for BS and MPhil students at the university’s Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics (CASP) and Department of Economics. The scholarships were sponsored by Mr. Rizwan-ul-Haque Rana and his family to honour his brother, Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, who devoted his 60-year career to teaching and research at GCU-CASP. Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq, who passed away on Nov 23, 2023, completed his MSc in Physics from GC Lahore in 1962. He was a direct student of Prof. Dr. Rafi Muhammad Chaudhary, the founder of CASP and widely regarded as the father of nuclear physics in Pakistan. Prof. Faizan played a pivotal role in training 45 Old Ravians who were part of the 150-member expert team that launched Pakistan’s atomic programme on May 28, 1998. He also prepared the PC-1 for the installation of a second Pelletron Accelerator at CASP in 2009. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Omer Chaudhry commended the family’s philanthropy, stating: “Prof. Faizan-ul-Haq’s legacy goes beyond his immense scientific contributions; it lives on in the generations of students he mentored. This generous endowment ensures that his mission of empowering young scholars will continue uninterrupted. We are deeply grateful to Mr. Rizwan-ul-Haque Rana and Mrs. Eloisa Rana for this noble cause, which will profoundly support our talented students in CASP.” The scholarships at GCU Lahore have been categorised into the Prof. Faizan Ul Haq Golden Scholarship, the Shah Begum & Ghulam Dastgir Golden Scholarship, and the Mr. Rizwan Ul Haque Rana & Mrs. Eloisa Rana Golden Scholarship. In addition to the endowment at GCU Lahore, the family has also established six golden scholarships, backed by a Rs6 million endowment, for physics students at Government College Women University (GCWU) Sialkot. Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir, former GCU Vice Chancellor and current Vice Chancellor of GCWU Sialkot, said Prof. Faizan believed in combining theoretical physics with real hands-on experience, training students in techniques ranging from glass blowing and spot welding to fabricating nuclear detectors. “He was an unsung hero who produced skilled, trained, talented, and well-groomed students,” Dr. Bashir stated. “This tremendous contribution to such a noble cause confirms that his good work will continue shaping the futures of thousands of students.”
