SC summons Sindh IG over murder FIR delays

The Supreme Court has summoned the Inspector General of Sindh Police over delays in registering murder cases.

A bench of the Supreme Court heard a case concerning the alleged delay in the registration of murder FIRs. During the hearing, the court expressed serious concern over the police response to complaints and directed the Sindh police chief to appear personally at the next hearing.

The court also summoned the Advocate General Sindh and the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sukkur. All three officials have been directed to appear before the court at the next hearing and explain the situation regarding delays in registering criminal cases.

Justice Hashim Kakar expressed strong displeasure over the performance of the Sindh police. He observed that the system of accountability and punishment appeared to be ineffective in the province.

The judge said the police were allegedly allowing accused persons to escape accountability. He noted that in the case being heard by the court, the murder case was registered two days after the killing.

Justice Kakar further observed that police in several cases appeared reluctant to register FIRs. He questioned how victims and their families could receive justice if cases were not registered promptly.

The judge used strong remarks to highlight the seriousness of the situation and criticised what he viewed as shortcomings in the handling of murder complaints.

Justice Salahuddin also expressed concern over the law-and-order situation in parts of Sindh. He specifically pointed to the conditions in Sukkur and Larkana, describing the situation there as particularly troubling.

The court directed the relevant officials to appear personally and provide answers regarding the alleged delays and the overall performance of the police in registering murder cases.

The Supreme Court subsequently adjourned further proceedings in the case until September 21. The summoned officials are expected to appear before the court on that date and respond to the concerns raised by the judges.

    Petrol Price hits Rs320.73 after fresh hike

    The federal government on Tuesday announced a fresh increase in the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD), continuing its new policy of daily fuel price adjustments. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs4.93 per litre. The new price has been fixed at Rs320.73 per litre. The price of high-speed diesel has also been raised by Rs7.15 per litre. Consumers will now pay Rs367.21 per litre for HSD. The revised prices will come into effect from July 22. The increase follows the government’s recent decision to introduce a daily petroleum pricing mechanism. Previously, fuel prices were reviewed every two weeks. Under the new system, prices are revised every day based on changes in the international oil market. Officials said the daily pricing formula uses the average international oil prices recorded over the previous seven days. The policy is intended to ensure that fluctuations in global crude oil prices are reflected more quickly in domestic fuel rates. The government had also revised fuel prices a day earlier. At that time, the price of high-speed diesel was increased, while petrol received a slight reduction for only one day. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will continue updating petroleum prices on a daily basis. The authority says the new system will improve transparency and allow consumers to see immediate changes linked to global oil prices. Officials said international crude oil prices have become highly volatile due to renewed tensions in the Middle East. Fresh conflict in the region has increased fears of disruptions to global energy supplies and pushed oil prices higher. Concerns over possible supply disruptions through key international shipping routes have also added pressure on global oil markets. Pakistan, which imports a large portion of its petroleum requirements, remains vulnerable to these fluctuations. Earlier, international oil prices had declined after hopes of easing regional tensions. However, the latest developments reversed that trend, forcing another increase in domestic fuel prices. High-speed diesel is mainly used by heavy transport vehicles, agricultural machinery and industries. Any increase in its price usually raises transportation costs and farming expenses, which can contribute to higher prices of essential goods. Petrol is the primary fuel for motorcycles, cars and other private vehicles. Officials said petrol consumption has also increased after restrictions were imposed on the use of indigenous gas in Punjab, leading more consumers to rely on petrol-powered transport.

    In line with the vision of the Honorable Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Honorable Chief Minister of the Punjab to promote digital transformation and innovation in higher education, the University of Okara (UO) has initiated efforts to explore the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents for academic and administrative operations. As part of this initiative, a high-level delegation comprising the Vice Chancellor of the Punjab Tianjin University of Technology (PTUT), Prof. Dr. Adeel Akram, and Chief Executive Officer of GalaxAI Solutions, Sheraz Waheed, visited the UO on Thursday. GalaxAI Solutions is an Islamabad-based technology company working on Sovereign AI infrastructure for Pakistan’s higher education sector. A meeting of the university’s academic heads and IT team was held under the chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Sajjad Mubin. During the session, the PTUT delegation delivered a comprehensive presentation on AI agents, highlighting their potential applications in admissions management, campus administration, academic support, and day-to-day institutional operations. Addressing the participants, Prof. Mubin appreciated the PTUT team for visiting the UO to share their expertise and practical insights into emerging AI technologies. He described PTUT as a rapidly progressing institution and reiterated his vision of transforming the UO into a smart university through the integration of cutting-edge artificial intelligence solutions. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Akram emphasized that AI has the potential to significantly enhance efficiency across teaching, research, governance, and administrative functions. He noted that intelligent AI agents can help universities streamline routine processes, improve decision-making, and deliver better services to students and faculty. The meeting concluded with an understanding that PTUT will submit a formal proposal for the transfer and implementation of the AI technology at the University of Okara. The proposal will be reviewed by the University’s relevant authorities and statutory bodies, and any future implementation will be subject to the completion of all required approvals.

Severe teacher shortage in Punjab The shortage of teachers in government schools in Punjab has become a major issue. According to the figures, 62 percent of permanent teaching positions in the province are vacant. The large number of vacant positions is placing an additional workload on the existing teaching staff raising concerns that the provision of quality education to students may also be affected. Fewer teachers, rising student numbers in Sindh The education situation in Sindh is also alarming where the number of teachers is declining while student enrollment is increasing. According to the report, 1,561 teachers in Sindh’s schools have not even passed matriculation meaning they do not meet the basic educational qualification required for teaching. Questions over education quality Education experts say that the shortage of teachers, untrained or underqualified teaching staff and the growing number of students have created a serious gap in the basic education system. Punjab and Sindh account for more than 60 percent of the country’s total population meaning that the education crisis in these two provinces also has a significant impact on the country’s overall education system. Education experts say that without effective measures for the immediate recruitment and training of teachers and improvements in educational standards, it will be difficult to achieve the goal of providing basic education to all children in the country. So far, the provincial governments have not announced any comprehensive province-wide plan to fully fill vacant teaching positions. However, demands for measures to improve the number of teachers and the quality of education in government schools are growing stronger.

      ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is expected to secure a two-thirds majority in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly after elections for the reserved seats. Speaking about the political situation in Azad Kashmir, Rana Sanaullah said that PML-N would form its government in the region with a clear majority. He stated that the party had secured victory on 25 seats and would achieve a two-thirds majority once the elections for reserved seats were completed. The prime minister’s adviser also expressed his appreciation for Sajid Iqbal, who was elected from LA-14. He thanked the newly elected lawmaker for deciding to support PML-N and said that Sajid Iqbal would work alongside the party for the development and improvement of Azad Kashmir. Rana Sanaullah said that the people of Azad Kashmir had given PML-N a mandate to improve the situation in the region and address the issues faced by its people. He emphasized that the party would fulfill the commitments it had made during the election campaign and would work to bring positive changes to the lives of citizens. He further said that the AJK Legislative Assembly would be allowed to function with its full constitutional powers. According to him, the new government would focus on governance, development and resolving the problems of the people instead of engaging in political confrontation. Commenting on the ongoing protests and sit-ins in Azad Kashmir, Rana Sanaullah said that the citizens participating in the demonstrations were their brothers and should not be viewed as opponents. He stressed that the people of Azad Kashmir were as much owners of Pakistan as citizens living in other parts of the country. However, he claimed that only a very small portion of the protesters, estimated at around one to one-and-a-half percent, might be influenced by elements attempting to create unrest or provoke violence. He maintained that the majority of the people participating in the protests were ordinary citizens expressing their concerns. Rana Sanaullah’s remarks come amid heightened political activity in Azad Kashmir following the recent elections. The expected formation of a PML-N government, along with the possibility of the party securing a two-thirds majority through reserved seats, could significantly strengthen its position in the AJK Legislative Assembly.
