Swat jirga rejects military operation, warns of Islamabad march

SWAT: A grand jirga of all major political parties, traders’ organizations, lawyers and civil society was held in Mingora under the banner of the Swat Qaumi Jirga. The participants strongly rejected any new military operation in Swat and demanded that the government eliminate all terrorists from Swat and Malakand Division within one month and establish lasting peace.

The jirga warned that if the government failed to meet the demand within the given time, a protest movement would be launched, followed by a long march towards Islamabad.

Speakers said that Swat and Malakand Division have faced terrorism, military operations, natural disasters and floods since 2007. They said these crises have badly damaged the local economy and affected tourism in the region.

They said the people could no longer afford another military operation, further unrest or new taxes. They urged the government to take immediate and practical steps to restore peace and support the local economy.

The participants welcomed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s decision to withdraw the imposition of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Revenue Authority (KPRA) and other provincial taxes. However, they demanded that the federal government also withdraw its decision to impose federal taxes in Malakand Division and the merged districts and restore the special status of Malakand Division.

After the jirga, former Matta tehsil nazim, Abdul Jabbar Khan, issued a declaration. He said the people of Swat and Malakand Division wanted lasting peace, restoration of the special status of Malakand Division and withdrawal of all tax measures.

The declaration strongly urged the state and relevant institutions to remove all terrorists from Swat and Malakand Division within one month.

According to the declaration, if the demands were not accepted, the people of Swat would unite and hold a major public protest. If the government still failed to address the security situation and withdraw the tax decisions, local elders, political and non-political organizations and civil society would block major roads and stage an open-ended sit-in.

The declaration said that if the government failed to accept the demands even after the sit-in, the jirga would announce a long march towards Islamabad.

Those who addressed the jirga included MPA Fazal Hakeem Khan, MNA Dr Amjad Ali Khan, former MNA Dr Haider Ali Khan, ANP district president Sher Shah Khan, former provincial assembly candidate Zahir Shah Rorjan, Pakistan Peoples Party Malakand Division president Malik Akram Khan, Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Akhtar Ali Khanji and Muhammad Amin, JUI leader Ejaz Khan, Paktunkhwa National Party leaders Umar Ali Khan Yousafzai, Saleem Khan and Fazal Ahad Lalaji, Malakand Division Traders Federation president Abdul Rahim, Swat Qaumi Jirga spokesman Ahmad Shah, Irfan Khan Chattan, PML-N Malakand Division president Wajid Ali Khan, district president Qawi Khan Advocate, former district nazim Jamal Nasir Khan and former district nazim Muhammad Ali Shah, among others.

The speakers said the people of Swat and Malakand Division had paid a heavy price during the past two decades because of terrorism and unrest. They said the time had come for the state to take effective and practical measures to protect the people, ensure lasting peace and support economic recovery in the region.

    SC summons Sindh IG over murder FIR delays

    The Supreme Court has summoned the Inspector General of Sindh Police over delays in registering murder cases. A bench of the Supreme Court heard a case concerning the alleged delay in the registration of murder FIRs. During the hearing, the court expressed serious concern over the police response to complaints and directed the Sindh police chief to appear personally at the next hearing. The court also summoned the Advocate General Sindh and the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sukkur. All three officials have been directed to appear before the court at the next hearing and explain the situation regarding delays in registering criminal cases. Justice Hashim Kakar expressed strong displeasure over the performance of the Sindh police. He observed that the system of accountability and punishment appeared to be ineffective in the province. The judge said the police were allegedly allowing accused persons to escape accountability. He noted that in the case being heard by the court, the murder case was registered two days after the killing. Justice Kakar further observed that police in several cases appeared reluctant to register FIRs. He questioned how victims and their families could receive justice if cases were not registered promptly. The judge used strong remarks to highlight the seriousness of the situation and criticised what he viewed as shortcomings in the handling of murder complaints. Justice Salahuddin also expressed concern over the law-and-order situation in parts of Sindh. He specifically pointed to the conditions in Sukkur and Larkana, describing the situation there as particularly troubling. The court directed the relevant officials to appear personally and provide answers regarding the alleged delays and the overall performance of the police in registering murder cases. The Supreme Court subsequently adjourned further proceedings in the case until September 21. The summoned officials are expected to appear before the court on that date and respond to the concerns raised by the judges.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on behalf of Field Marshal and Chief of Defence Forces Syed Asim Munir briefed the US Ambassador to Pakistan on important developments in the Iran-US ceasefire process. According to sources, a high-level meeting between Field Marshal Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi following the latter’s recent visit to Iran has raised expectations of a major breakthrough. Officials described the meeting as highly significant saying that the atmosphere during the meeting was pleasant and positive. Sources said that the tone of the meeting and the discussions suggested that “good news is likely coming soon.” US Ambassador briefed on key developments A video of Mohsin Naqvi’s meeting with the US Ambassador showed a cordial atmosphere between the two. According to sources, the interior minister briefed the ambassador on behalf of Field Marshal Asim Munir about significant developments aimed at reducing tensions between Iran and the United States and advancing negotiations. Sources said the US Ambassador also showed keen interest in the developments and appeared optimistic during the meeting. Pakistan’s key role in mediation It may be recalled that US President Donald Trump had earlier requested Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir to play an important role in facilitating a ceasefire between Iran and the United States. Following this, Pakistan’s military and civilian leadership accelerated diplomatic contacts including the recent visit to Tehran by Field Marshal Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. According to analysts, Pakistan’s geographical proximity to Iran and its strategic partnership with the United States give it a unique position to help reduce tensions in the region and facilitate communication between the two sides. Final approval of both sides required Sources while confirming much of the progress clarified that final approval from both Iran and the United States is still pending. According to one source, since the progress remains conditional on the consent of both sides, it would not be appropriate at this stage to disclose all details or key points of the meetings between Pakistani and Iranian officials. So far, no official announcement has been made regarding an Iran-US ceasefire. However, amid the optimistic diplomatic environment and recent contacts, expectations are growing that a major announcement regarding a ceasefire could be made soon if final approval is secured. Islamabad has reiterated its commitment to peace in the region saying that Pakistan will continue to play a constructive role in reducing tensions and promoting regional peace.

    Peshawar High Court blocks deportation of two Afgh…

    The Peshawar High Court has stopped the deportation of two Afghan journalists who are currently living in Pakistan. The court has directed the federal government to decide their cases within two months. The petitioners have been identified as Syed Ehsanullah Salehi and Syed Munir Ahmed. Both are Afghan journalists. The court said the two petitioners entered Pakistan on valid visas. They are currently residing in the country. According to the petitioners, they have applied for resettlement in France. Their applications are still under consideration. The petitioners also informed the court that the French embassy has already verified their cases. Their lawyer told the court that both journalists face a risk of arrest and deportation. He said the fear of deportation has also restricted their freedom of movement in Pakistan. After hearing the case, the high court directed the federal government to determine the matter within 60 days. The court also issued directions for the situation if the government fails to reach a decision within the given period. It said the Ministry of Interior should grant the petitioners temporary permission to remain in Pakistan. The ruling provides temporary relief to the two Afghan journalists while their cases are being reviewed by the relevant authorities. Separately, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said Afghan nationals who wish to return to Pakistan in the future can do so after obtaining a valid visa. The development comes as Afghan nationals in Pakistan continue to face scrutiny over their legal status and documentation.     Nawaz Sharif calls for better governance in AJK

    Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has urged political parties to keep their differences within the bounds of democratic competition, saying political rivalry should never turn into personal hostility. Addressing a meeting of the PML-N Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) parliamentary party in Murree, Nawaz congratulated the candidates who won seats in the AJK elections and called for greater financial support for the region. He said the federal government should provide AJK with maximum possible development funds so that the territory can improve its infrastructure and public services. He also directed the party leadership to examine the reasons behind the defeat of several strong PML-N candidates and learn from the election results. Nawaz said the party had secured victories in two phases of the electoral process, describing the results as another expression of public confidence in the PML-N. However, he cautioned that the party must deliver on its promises to retain that trust. “If the PML-N fails to deliver, the people here will become disappointed,” he said. The former prime minister stressed the need to improve roads, hospitals and other basic facilities across AJK. He said children in the region should also have access to modern educational opportunities and technology, including laptops. Nawaz credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s efforts for the country’s ongoing development, saying Pakistan was moving forward. He called for AJK to experience similar progress and said the region should develop along the lines of Punjab. He stressed that the PML-N could not afford to disappoint voters who had placed their confidence in the party. Nawaz also expressed concern over complaints that emerged during the political process involving the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He said he had not expected the PPP to provide an opportunity for complaints, particularly given that the party had previously led the AJK government. “Some complaints reached us, and I was saddened by them,” Nawaz said, while emphasising the need for political parties to maintain respectful relations despite their differences. He said previous AJK governments had failed to fully meet public expectations and stressed that improving the welfare and living standards of the region’s people should remain the top priority. Nawaz maintained that the PML-N would continue to focus on development and public service while working to strengthen its political position in AJK.

    Zardari hails landmark Saudi-Turkiye-Pakistan pact

    President Asif Ali Zardari has praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for strengthening Pakistan’s strategic ties with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye through a landmark joint defence agreement. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met President Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Friday and briefed him on the trilateral agreement reached at the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit on August 7. The prime minister also conveyed Independence Day greetings to the president. Under the agreement, an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be considered an attack against all three. The arrangement is aimed at deepening defence cooperation and strengthening collective security among the allied nations. President Zardari expressed hope that the agreement would be implemented effectively and contribute to regional peace, stability and security. He said closer cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye could also reinforce unity and security across the Muslim world. The president also acknowledged the capabilities and sacrifices of Pakistan’s armed forces and law enforcement agencies in combating terrorism and confronting security threats.
