BANGKOK – Their Majesties King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida of Thailand visited the sacred Pha That Luang in Vientiane on March 18 to pay homage to the revered golden stupa and the principal Buddha images at the Pha That Luang Museum, marking the final engagement of their three-day official visit to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

The royal couple was warmly welcomed at the national landmark by Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith and his spouse, along with senior Lao officials including the minister of information, culture, and tourism, and the governor of Vientiane Capital. Members of the local public also gathered at the site, eager to greet Their Majesties during this historic occasion.

In keeping with Lao religious traditions, the King and Queen participated in solemn rites at the western worship hall, lighting incense and candles before paying homage to the sacred site. They later attended a Buddhist ceremony presided over by senior monks, during which scriptures were chanted in a display of the deep shared religious heritage between the two neighbouring kingdoms.

Their Majesties presented offerings to the monastic assembly, performed a traditional water-pouring ritual, and signed the visitors’ book, leaving a lasting record of their pilgrimage. As a gesture of respect and friendship, a Buddha image was presented to His Majesty the King during the visit.

Following the deeply meaningful ceremonies at Pha That Luang, Their Majesties proceeded to Wattay International Airport, where they were bid farewell by senior government dignitaries before departing for Thailand. The departure brought to a close their official visit to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, which took place from March 16 to 18, 2026.

The visit marked the first by a Thai monarch to Laos in 32 years and served to strengthen the longstanding bonds of friendship, good-neighbourly relations, and strategic partnership between the two kingdoms. Throughout their stay, the King and Queen engaged in high-level meetings with Lao leadership, participated in cultural ceremonies, and visited development projects, reinforcing the deep historical and cultural ties that unite the peoples of Thailand and Laos.

At the same time, he asserted that the ruling party has enough parliamentary support to continue governing even without the PPP’s backing. He also responded to political rhetoric about the government’s future, saying that any political “countdown” would not be limited to the PML-N. According to him, the same pressure could also apply to the provincial governments in Sindh and Balochistan. Addressing another claim, Rehman said he did not agree with the suggestion that the government had achieved 30 years’ worth of progress in just three years. He maintained that performance should be judged on measurable results rather than exaggerated comparisons. The prime minister’s aide further revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed all federal ministries about a month ago to submit detailed performance reports. He said the initiative reflects the government’s focus on reviewing progress, improving governance, and ensuring accountability across ministries.

    PSX closes higher despite volatile trading

      The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a positive trading session on Tuesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index gaining 1,116 points to close at 177,083 points. The index remained volatile throughout the trading session and moved within a range of 1,755 points. It reached an intraday high of 178,768 points before easing from its peak as investors adjusted their positions. Trading activity remained strong, with approximately 710 million shares changing hands in 25 billion rupees worth of transactions. The high trading volume reflected continued investor participation and active buying and selling across various sectors. Despite the rise in the benchmark index, the overall market capitalisation declined by around 120 billion rupees, falling to 19,833 billion rupees by the end of the session. The market’s performance reflected a mixed trend, as investors continued to monitor economic developments and market conditions while actively repositioning their portfolios.

    Airbus completes record 24-hour flight with plane …

    A specially modified Airbus A350 plane touched down in France on Tuesday after a record 24-hour test flight from Australia, ahead of its joining Qantas’s fleet next year. Its 23,076-kilometre journey across three continents and two oceans, and through two sunsets and two dawns  was one of the most-watched flights shown on the Flightradar24 tracking site. The flight from Australia to France took precisely 24 hours and 24 minutes. On its outbound flight last week, from Toulouse to Melbourne, the test aircraft flew 17,000 kilometres in 19 hours and 12 minutes. The test flight was a crucial step before Australian airline Qantas receives its first A350-1000ULR in April next year, to be followed by 11 others for services able to link Australia non-stop to destinations in the United States and Europe. The ULR in its designation stands for “ultra long distance,” a feat made possible by an additional 20,000-litre rear centre fuel tank being fitted to Airbus’s A350-1000 model. Qantas plans to start offering non-stop flights between London and Sydney from October 2027. Later, it intends to start flying between Sydney and New York. On board the plane was a cockpit crew of eight people from Airbus’s testing division, accompanied by two Qantas pilots. Two Airbus engineers were also on board. Some of the aspects studied on the flight were the modified architecture around the extra fuel tank, changes to make the cabin quieter, and the plane’s air circulation system. Qantas’s ‘Project Sunrise,’ using ultra-long-haul planes, has been on the cards for the past nine years but has been repeatedly delayed. Currently, the longest commercial flight service in the world is Singapore Airlines’ route between Singapore and New York, which covers 15,350 kilometres and lasts more than 18 hours using another variant of the A350. The successful test flight brings Qantas one step closer to realizing its vision of non-stop connections between Australia and some of the world’s farthest destinations.

    Lawyer and social activist Jibran Nasir has criticised the country’s political and economic situation, alleging that pressure, censorship and coercive measures have failed to change public opinion about PTI founder Imran Khan. Speaking to anchorperson Ameer Abbas, Nasir said authorities had been unable to alter public sentiment toward Imran Khan despite what he described as years of pressure and attempts to control political discourse. He argued that if public opinion had genuinely changed, millions of people would not have voted for Imran Khan and his political movement in the February 8 general elections. Nasir questioned how the authorities could claim to change broader public thinking about the economy, Constitution and rule of law when they had not been able to change people’s views about a single political leader. He also criticised what he described as restrictions on political expression and media freedom. Nasir alleged that force, state pressure, censorship and arrests were being used to control political developments. According to Nasir, suppressing criticism does not resolve underlying public grievances. He said people who speak about alleged injustices are sometimes portrayed as creating unrest rather than being allowed to raise their concerns. He warned that continued reliance on pressure could increase frustration among citizens instead of resolving political differences. Nasir further claimed that people were now more aware of political developments and could not easily be persuaded through fear or restrictions. He said arrests, cases and harsh measures had not succeeded in changing the position of a significant section of the public. The lawyer maintained that political issues could not be permanently controlled through force. He called for greater space for political expression and a process through which public grievances could be addressed. His comments come amid continued political tensions between the government and PTI. The party has repeatedly raised concerns over the treatment of its leadership, legal cases against its members and restrictions on political activities.

    Islamabad: State owned petroleum companies Pakistan Refinery Limited (PRL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) faced serious criticism in the Senate after lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction over missing information, failure to follow committee directions and concerns about company management. The Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum questioned the performance and accountability of government owned petroleum companies and considered taking strict action against officials who failed to cooperate with parliamentary oversight. During the meeting chaired by Senator Umer Farooq, the committee reviewed the appointment criteria for chairpersons and managing directors of petroleum companies, the structure of their boards and progress on previous committee recommendations. The committee took serious notice of the absence of the Managing Director of Pakistan Refinery Limited during the meeting. Members expressed concern that PRL, despite being a state-owned company, did not provide the required information to the committee. The committee considered initiating a privilege motion against the Managing Director of PRL for failing to appear and provide necessary details. The Petroleum Division was directed to submit complete information about the boards of directors and senior management of all government owned petroleum companies. The committee said transparency in leadership appointments and company management is necessary because these organisations deal with matters directly linked to the national economy and public interest. The committee also expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of Sui Southern Gas Company and its failure to implement previous recommendations. Members said SSGC had not provided details of its board of directors despite earlier instructions. The committee also raised concerns over remarks made by SSGC that were considered discouraging toward the Senate Standing Committee’s role in discussing important matters. The committee considered moving a privilege motion against SSGC over non compliance with its directions. The Petroleum Division was further directed to review the tenure of board members who have remained in positions beyond the approved period and submit a detailed report. The committee also raised concerns over the absence of performance audits of oil rigs. Authorities were directed to provide the required audit report within seven days so that the committee could review the performance and efficiency of petroleum sector operations. Members said proper audits are necessary to identify problems, improve production and ensure better use of national resources. The committee also reviewed issues related to LPG quotas and licensing. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority was directed to hold consultations with all relevant stakeholders and submit a detailed report to the committee. Senators stressed that petroleum companies must improve governance, follow parliamentary instructions and ensure public institutions operate with transparency. The committee said accountability in state owned petroleum companies is essential to protect national interests and improve confidence in the energy sector.
