Women who helped shape the Pakistan movement

When the history of Pakistan’s independence is discussed, the narrative often focuses on the male political leaders who negotiated with the British, addressed large public gatherings and worked toward the creation of a separate homeland. However, women also played an important and often overlooked role in the Pakistan Movement. They organised political activities, mobilised communities, created awareness, participated in protests, assisted refugees and challenged traditional expectations about women’s place in public life.

Among the prominent women of the movement, Fatima Jinnah remains one of the most widely recognised figures. However, her contribution extended far beyond her relationship with Muhammad Ali Jinnah as his sister. She worked closely with her brother and played an active role in encouraging Muslim women to participate in political activities.

At a time when women’s involvement in public politics was socially restricted, Fatima Jinnah’s visibility carried considerable significance. Her participation demonstrated that the struggle for Pakistan was not intended to be limited to men. She became an important symbol of women’s political participation and helped encourage Muslim women to take an active interest in the future of the community.

Following Partition in 1947, Fatima Jinnah continued her public service. She became involved in efforts to support refugees and assist with their rehabilitation. She also continued to speak for greater participation of women in the political and social development of Pakistan.

Another important figure was Abadi Bano Begum, popularly known as Bi Amma. Long before the demand for Pakistan became the central political objective of Indian Muslims, Bi Amma had already demonstrated that Muslim women could play a role in political movements. She was the mother of prominent leaders Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar and Maulana Shaukat Ali and became actively involved in the Khilafat Movement.

Bi Amma addressed public gatherings and encouraged people to support the political struggle against British rule. Her involvement was significant because political activism was still considered unusual for many Muslim women. By entering the public sphere, she helped challenge the idea that politics was exclusively a man’s responsibility.

Begum Jahan Ara Shah Nawaz was another influential woman associated with Muslim League politics. Rather than remaining a passive supporter, she actively participated in political mobilisation and worked to increase women’s involvement in the Pakistan Movement. During the politically tense period of 1946–47, Muslim League women participated in protests in Punjab, with some even facing arrest.

Her political involvement had begun well before Pakistan was established. She participated in the First Round Table Conference and raised concerns about discrimination against women in political rights, government employment, business and professional opportunities.

After independence, Begum Jahan Ara Shah Nawaz became one of the two women members of Pakistan’s first Constituent Assembly. Alongside Shaista Ikramullah, she worked to bring women’s rights and legal equality into discussions about the new state.

The contributions of these women show that Pakistan’s independence was not achieved through the efforts of men alone. Women participated in political mobilisation, social reform and nation-building, helping establish the principle that they had a legitimate and important role in Pakistan’s public life.

Heavy rains and floods leave 14 dead, thousands displaced in Southern India

Heavy monsoon rains continued to wreak havoc across southern India, leaving at least 14 people dead and forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes as floods and landslides caused widespread destruction in the states of Kerala and Karnataka. According to local authorities, at least 11 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents across Kerala since the weekend. The relentless downpours have inundated low-lying areas, damaged homes and roads, and disrupted daily life across several districts. State officials said nearly 7,700 residents have been evacuated from flood-prone areas and shifted to approximately 275 relief camps established across Kerala. Emergency response teams, including disaster management personnel and local volunteers, have been working around the clock to rescue stranded residents and provide food, shelter, and medical assistance. Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan is scheduled to hold a high-level meeting with district officials on Monday to assess the flood situation and review relief and rehabilitation measures. He stated that cleanup operations have already begun in several areas where floodwaters have started to recede, while authorities continue to monitor regions still at risk. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has warned that several parts of the state are expected to experience moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds, raising concerns that conditions could worsen in vulnerable locations. Residents living near rivers, hillsides, and flood-prone areas have been advised to remain alert and follow official safety instructions. The severe weather has also disrupted education across Kerala. Numerous schools remained closed due to flooding and unsafe travel conditions, while the state government postponed a scheduled teacher recruitment examination to ensure the safety of candidates and staff. Meanwhile, neighboring Karnataka has also suffered significant damage from the monsoon. Heavy rainfall triggered a landslide on Saturday that claimed the lives of three members of the same family—a couple and their son—highlighting the growing threat posed by unstable hillsides during the rainy season. Meteorological officials have warned that monsoon activity is expected to remain active over parts of southern India in the coming days. Disaster management agencies are maintaining a high level of preparedness as rescue teams continue relief efforts and authorities closely monitor rivers, reservoirs, and landslide-prone regions. The annual monsoon season frequently brings heavy rainfall to southern India, but experts say increasingly intense weather events are placing greater pressure on infrastructure, emergency services, and vulnerable communities.

Rosie O’Donnell says Mounjaro helped her feel better at 64

Rosie O’Donnell says she has never felt healthier than she does now, crediting the weight-loss drug Mounjaro for the change. The comedian opened up about her health journey during a recent podcast appearance. Speaking with Amy Poehler on the “Good Hang” podcast on Tuesday, O’Donnell shared how much more comfortable she feels in her body today. She admitted it’s bittersweet that it took until age 64 to reach this point. O’Donnell explained that Mounjaro played a significant role in that shift. She revealed she started taking the drug three years ago after her doctor prescribed it specifically to manage her diabetes. She was clear that weight loss was never the original goal or focus. According to O’Donnell, her doctor was solely concerned with improving her blood sugar numbers at the time. She recalled first noticing changes in her appetite around the time of her son’s engagement dinner. At that event, she found herself completely unable to eat. Initially, O’Donnell assumed the loss of appetite was tied to emotional grief. She was missing her late mother deeply during that period and thought sadness was affecting her eating. But when she eventually stepped on the scale, the results alarmed her enough to call her doctor immediately. She feared something serious might be wrong with her health. O’Donnell recalled breaking down in tears during that call, worried she might have cancer. She explained that she had lost 12 pounds without making any conscious changes to her routine. She said the sudden, unexplained weight loss was unlike anything she had experienced before. That moment marked a turning point in understanding how the medication was affecting her body. Mounjaro is commonly prescribed for both type 2 diabetes and long-term weight management. The drug received FDA approval back in 2022 and has since become widely discussed among public figures. O’Donnell’s candid reflection adds to a growing number of celebrities openly discussing their experiences with prescription weight-loss medications. Her comments offer a personal look at how a treatment meant for one condition ended up reshaping another part of her life entirely.

Justice Babar Sattar vacates government residence …

Justice Babar Sattar, who has been transferred to the Peshawar High Court, has vacated his official government residence in Islamabad following a notice issued by the registrar of the Islamabad High Court. According to sources, Justice Babar Sattar vacated the government residence two days ago after returning from his judicial holidays. The development came after the relevant authorities formally cancelled the allotment of the residence and directed him to vacate the property within the specified period. The Estate Office had cancelled the allotment of the house on July 3. Subsequently, the registrar of the Islamabad High Court issued a notice instructing Justice Babar Sattar to vacate the official residence within 30 days. Sources said that Justice Babar Sattar complied with the notice and vacated the residence after completing his judicial holidays. The house has now been cleared following the cancellation of its allotment. Justice Babar Sattar had been serving at the Islamabad High Court before being transferred to the Peshawar High Court. His transfer meant that the official residence allotted to him in Islamabad was no longer required under the same arrangement. The cancellation of the residence was carried out by the Estate Office on July 3. The subsequent notice from the Islamabad High Court registrar formally communicated the requirement to vacate the property within 30 days. According to sources familiar with the matter, Justice Babar Sattar left the government residence after his return from judicial leave. He reportedly vacated the house two days before the latest development was reported. Government residences are allotted to public officials according to applicable rules and are generally linked to their official postings and responsibilities. When an officer or judge is transferred to another jurisdiction, the relevant authorities may review or cancel the allotment of the official residence in accordance with the applicable regulations. In this case, the cancellation by the Estate Office was followed by the registrar’s notice, giving Justice Babar Sattar a 30-day period to vacate the premises. The residence has now been vacated, bringing the matter concerning the Islamabad government house to a close. Justice Babar Sattar’s transfer to the Peshawar High Court forms part of the judicial changes involving judges of the superior courts. Following the transfer, his official responsibilities are now associated with the Peshawar High Court rather than the Islamabad High Court. The latest development is limited to the vacation of the government residence and follows the formal cancellation of its allotment. According to sources, Justice Babar Sattar complied with the directions and vacated the property without waiting for the full 30-day period to expire. The sequence of events began with the Estate Office cancelling the house allotment on July 3. The Islamabad High Court registrar subsequently issued a notice requiring the residence to be vacated within 30 days. Justice Babar Sattar then vacated the house shortly after returning from judicial holidays. The development highlights the administrative consequences that can follow the transfer of a judge from one high court to another, particularly regarding official facilities and government accommodations. With the residence now vacated, the government property can be dealt with by the relevant authorities according to the applicable rules and future allotment requirements.

Gigi Hadid fuels relationship buzz with ring in Paris

Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper have once again fueled speculation about the status of their relationship after they were spotted wearing matching rings during a recent outing in Paris. The couple, who have been romantically linked since October 2023, were photographed leaving a gym together on Thursday. During the outing, Hadid was seen wearing a ring on her left hand, drawing renewed attention to the jewellery that has recently sparked engagement and marriage rumours. For the casual workout session, Cooper kept his look simple, wearing a backwards white baseball cap, a blue One Tribe Foundation “Hero 365” T-shirt, and matching athletic shorts. Unlike Hadid, however, he was not seen wearing the ring during the gym visit. The pair first ignited speculation earlier this week when they appeared together in Paris wearing matching rings. Fans quickly questioned whether the accessories signaled an engagement or a secret wedding. Reports suggest Hadid’s ring is a luxury wedding band crafted by French jewellery house Boucheron. The model’s piece is believed to be the Quatre Radiant Edition Wedding Band, valued at approximately $6,450. Cooper’s matching ring is said to be the Godron Pink Gold Wedding Band, priced at around $2,120. The complementary designs have attracted attention because they symbolize unity and commitment. The double-band style of Cooper’s ring is often associated with the strength of a lasting relationship, adding to the speculation surrounding the couple’s romance. Despite the growing rumours, multiple reports indicate that the rings do not necessarily mean wedding plans are underway. According to an insider, the couple have owned the rings for several months and consider them commitment rings rather than engagement or wedding bands. The source claimed that Hadid and Cooper are happy with their relationship but are not interested in having a traditional wedding or getting married at this stage. The insider also noted that their relationship continues to grow stronger and that they are in a good place together. The latest sighting comes as Cooper spends time in Paris for professional commitments. The actor is reportedly preparing for a major film project in which he is expected to write, direct and star. The upcoming production is said to explore the backstory of Danny Ocean’s father and is set years before the events of the popular Ocean’s 11 franchise. In addition to the live-action film, Cooper is also expected to lend his voice to an upcoming animated feature directed by acclaimed filmmaker Bong Joon Ho. The project features an ensemble voice cast and is scheduled for release in 2027. Both stars have children from previous relationships. Hadid shares five-year-old daughter Khai with former partner Zayn Malik, while Cooper co-parents nine-year-old daughter Lea De Seine with model Irina Shayk. Although marriage rumours continue to circulate, neither Hadid nor Cooper has publicly commented on the significance of the matching rings, leaving fans to continue speculating about the future of their relationship.

Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce’s pets struggle after wedding

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce may have settled comfortably into married life, but their beloved pets are reportedly taking a little longer to adjust to their new family dynamic. The pop superstar and NFL champion exchanged wedding vows on July 3, 2026, at Madison Square Garden in what was described as a dreamy and intimate ceremony. Since then, the newlyweds are believed to have been enjoying married life and settling into their relationship with ease. However, their pets appear to be facing an entirely different kind of adjustment. According to people familiar with the couple, Swift’s cats are still getting used to Kelce’s dog, Wendy, who has become part of their shared household. While the couple themselves have reportedly adapted quickly to married life, their four-legged companions are finding it harder to establish a comfortable routine together. Swift’s cats have spent years enjoying their familiar surroundings and are reportedly not particularly impressed by the arrival of an energetic dog. Wendy, whom Kelce adopted last year, is said to be eager to interact and play with the cats, but the feeling does not appear to be mutual. The biggest challenge seems to be their very different personalities. Wendy reportedly wants to play and socialize throughout the day, while Swift’s cats prefer a quieter environment where they can relax and have their own space. The situation has reportedly become a humorous part of life inside the couple’s home, with the animals slowly learning how to coexist under the same roof. Despite the difficulties, there is reportedly no serious concern among Swift and Kelce’s friends. The couple are said to be handling the situation patiently and allowing their pets to adjust at their own pace rather than forcing them to become close immediately. The animals are gradually becoming more comfortable around one another and are eventually able to spend time in the same room. Although they may not have reached the stage of cuddling together just yet, their progress is reportedly encouraging. The situation is also being viewed as a normal part of blending two households after marriage. While Swift and Kelce have already established their rhythm as a couple, their pets are still learning how to share their space and routines. Interestingly, the pets’ slow adjustment comes as Swift and Kelce mark another important milestone in their relationship. The couple recently reached the one-year anniversary of their engagement, which they publicly announced on August 10, 2025. For now, the newlyweds appear to be giving their pets plenty of time to settle into their new reality. If their owners’ relationship is any indication, there may be plenty of time for the cats and Wendy to eventually find their own version of harmony.

Imran Khan marks three years in jail

Former prime Minister Imran Khan has completed three years in prison after his arrest in the Toshakhana case. He was taken into custody on August 5, 2023, shortly after a court convicted him in the case. Following his arrest, he was shifted from his residence in Zaman Park, Lahore, to District Jail Attock under strict security arrangements. Imran Khan remained at Attock Jail for one month and 21 days. During that period, security around the prison was tightened, while legal proceedings related to multiple cases against him continued in different courts. On September 26, 2023, the Islamabad High Court ordered his transfer from Attock Jail to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Since then, he has remained detained at the facility, where he continues to face legal proceedings in several cases. Under the Pakistan Prison Rules, the former prime minister has been provided better-class facilities because of his status as a former head of government. He is being housed in a separate compound consisting of seven cells inside Adiala Jail. The designated area is secured and managed in accordance with prison regulations. During his three years in custody, Imran Khan has reportedly faced a number of health-related issues, including physical complications that have required medical attention from time to time. His legal team has on several occasions raised concerns about his health and requested appropriate medical care, while prison authorities have maintained that medical facilities are being provided in line with the law. Despite remaining behind bars, Imran Khan continues to be a central figure in Pakistan’s political landscape. Court hearings in various cases involving the former prime minister are ongoing, while his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), continues to pursue legal and political efforts regarding his release.
