MULTAN: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a star-studded commentary panel for the National Champions Cup 2026, adding further excitement to a tournament that could prove important in shaping Pakistan’s future international squad.

The seven-match competition will be played at Multan Cricket Stadium from August 11 to 18, with four teams — Pakistan Greens, Pakistan Whites, Pakistan Blues and Pakistan Gold — competing in a single round-robin format.

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt will headline the commentary team alongside Ali Younis, Tariq Saeed, Aimen Anwar and Raja Asad. Their experience and analysis are expected to provide viewers with deeper insight into the performances of established players and emerging prospects.

Under the tournament format, each team will face the other three sides once. The two teams collecting the most points at the end of the league stage will advance to the final.

The Champions Cup carries added significance as the PCB looks ahead to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. Selectors will use the competition to closely monitor players competing for national recognition, while younger cricketers will have an opportunity to make a strong impression.

The PCB has selected 44 players across the four squads, with another 13 players included in a reserve pool. Reserve players can replace members of the main squads only in cases involving injury or concussion.

With established internationals sharing the field with promising domestic talent, the tournament is expected to offer a revealing look at Pakistan’s emerging cricketing depth.

For selectors, every match could become an audition. For players, the Champions Cup may represent a crucial step towards earning a place in Pakistan’s plans for the 2027 World Cup, to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

    POTOHAR: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved an ambitious plan to construct 800 mini dams across the Potohar region over the next three years, marking one of the province’s largest initiatives aimed at improving rainwater storage and tackling water scarcity. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting on water conservation and groundwater management, where officials briefed the Chief Minister on ongoing efforts to protect Punjab’s water resources. Authorities informed the meeting that 110 mini dams have already been completed across the province, contributing to improved water preservation. The new project is expected to add storage capacity of approximately 32,000 acre-feet of rainwater, strengthening water security for agriculture and local communities. Maryam Nawaz also directed officials to prepare a comprehensive strategy for developing natural and artificial water bodies while calling for stronger legislation to regulate groundwater use. To improve oversight, dedicated personnel will be assigned to monitor water conservation initiatives. The chief minister instructed the agriculture, irrigation, housing and local government departments to work together to ensure the effective implementation of water-saving measures. Officials presented photographic evidence of recently completed mini dams in Attock, Talagang, Gujar Khan and Rawalpindi, highlighting progress already made in the region. During the briefing, authorities revealed that Punjab has developed a strategy to minimise water losses, which currently stand at around 30 per cent during distribution and 25 per cent during consumption. They also reported that the lining of 2,600 watercourses covering nearly 7,000 kilometres has already delivered significant water savings. Over the next three years, another 4,500 watercourses stretching 11,500 kilometres will be upgraded. The meeting was informed that high-efficiency irrigation systems have already conserved around 18,000 acre-feet of water while boosting crop productivity by nearly 50 per cent. The government now plans to extend modern drip and sprinkler irrigation systems to an additional 30,000 acres. Officials further stated that 100 groundwater recharge wells are already operational in the Gujranwala, Gujrat and Lahore divisions, with another 300 nearing completion to strengthen groundwater reserves. The chief minister also reviewed the availability of fertilisers across Punjab and approved the provision of 1,000 new laser land levellers to farmers at a 50 per cent subsidy during the current financial year to promote efficient farming practices. In a separate meeting on law and order, Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to adopt a zero-tolerance approach against rape, child abuse and corruption. She was also informed that the Safe City Project has now been implemented in all 43 districts of Punjab and is expected to be inaugurated soon, further enhancing public safety and surveillance across the province.

She further claimed that within 18 months, the Punjab government provided housing opportunities to around 200,000 people under the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” initiative. According to her, educational support programs have also been expanded, including the distribution of laptops to 100,000 students and Honhaar scholarships for 50,000 students. Maryam Aurangzeb emphasized that PML-N’s approach is based on development, education, and public welfare. She called on party supporters to actively participate in political activities and strengthen the party’s position.     KP launches Rs2bn Jamrud development projects

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi on Sunday launched five development projects worth more than Rs2 billion in Jamrud, District Khyber, saying the schemes would improve public services and accelerate development in the merged tribal districts. The projects include the construction of a Nursing College in Jamrud at a cost of Rs636 million, the establishment of artificial intelligence (AI) classrooms at the Institute of Applied Sciences for Rs32 million, the rehabilitation and solarisation of 21 drinking water supply schemes worth Rs502 million, the beautification of Jamrud Bazaar for Rs430 million, and the widening, rehabilitation and improvement of the 10-kilometre Takhta Beg Road in Bara at a cost of Rs424 million. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Afridi said the people of his constituency had given him overwhelming support in the elections, making him the first chief minister from the merged tribal districts. He said the trust placed in him by the public had increased his responsibility to ensure balanced and transparent development across the province. The chief minister described the newly launched projects as the rightful entitlement of the people and said his government was committed to improving healthcare, education, road infrastructure, clean drinking water and urban facilities in underdeveloped areas. Afridi also spoke about the political situation facing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), saying the party leadership was going through a difficult period. He reiterated the party’s stance that former prime minister Imran Khan had been denied adequate access despite pursuing legal and constitutional avenues. He claimed PTI had exhausted all efforts aimed at reconciliation and said the party would continue its political struggle through public mobilisation. The chief minister announced that PTI would hold a major public gathering in Peshawar on August 5, urging supporters to participate in large numbers.     Oscar-winning Irish singer, songwriter and actor Glen Hansard has died following a motorcycle crash in Dublin. He was 56. Police said the single vehicle accident happened in the early hours of Wednesday on Lower Road in Lucan, west of the Irish capital, and have appealed for witnesses as investigations continue. Hansard rose to international fame as the lead singer of the rock band The Frames and later gained worldwide recognition through the independent film Once. His greatest international achievement came in 2008 when he and Czech musician Markéta Irglová won the Academy Awards for Best Original Song with Falling Slowly, written for the low budget film Once. The film, which tells the story of two musicians who form a creative partnership in Dublin, became a global success after winning the World Cinema Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Its Broadway adaptation later earned eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Hansard also performed as one half of the musical duo The Swell Season and released several solo albums during his career. His 2015 album Didn’t He Ramble received a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album, further establishing him as one of Ireland’s most respected contemporary musicians. Away from the stage, Hansard was widely admired for his charitable work. In 2010, he launched Dublin’s annual Christmas Eve charity busk to raise funds for the Dublin Simon Community. On the final trading day of July, the KSE-100 Index had already climbed 546 points, setting the stage for an impressive weekly finish. Trading activity also remained robust. During the five trading sessions, investors exchanged approximately 4.15 billion shares, with the total value of transactions reaching Rs158 billion, indicating strong liquidity and continued interest from market participants. Meanwhile, the market’s overall capitalization increased by Rs477 billion over the week, reaching Rs19.755 trillion. The significant rise in market value underscores improving sentiment among investors despite ongoing economic challenges. Market experts say the latest gains reflect confidence in Pakistan’s financial markets, supported by sustained institutional buying and expectations of improving macroeconomic conditions. However, they caution that investors will continue to monitor economic indicators, corporate earnings and policy developments that could influence market direction in the coming weeks.
