PSL wraps up season 11 review, sets sights on edition 12

The Pakistan Super League management met with all eight franchise owners this week and the purpose behind it was simple. They wanted to review how season 11 went, and to look ahead at what comes next.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi led the session. Several key officials joined him. These included PSL CEO Salman Naseer and PCB CFO Javed Murtaza. PSL Director Usman Wahla was also present. So were Senior Manager Hijab Zahid and Manager Operations Usman Tasleem, along with a few others.

The meeting was not just about looking back. It also became a space for brainstorming. Officials discussed several off-season and pre-season activities. The goal is to keep fans engaged during the break.

A big part of the discussion focused on what made season 11 special. Officials pointed to new additions in broadcast and fan engagement. They also praised the overall quality of cricket across all 44 matches. Viewership numbers came up too. The season saw strong engagement across social media, streaming platforms and television. More specific numbers are expected to be released soon.

Planning for the future took up a large chunk of the meeting as well. Stakeholders discussed the playing window for PSL 12. They also touched on early scheduling ideas. However, full details will likely only be revealed after the PSL Governing Council meets in late August.

The group also reflected on how far the league has come. Two new franchises joined this season. At the same time, three existing teams changed ownership. The tournament was held at just two venues this year, a decision made under unusual circumstances. It also ran in a new scheduling window for the second year running.

Looking ahead, PSL confirmed a new initiative. It plans to launch a merchandise platform alongside the franchises. This will let fans, both at home and abroad, buy official gear. That includes merchandise from all eight participating teams.

To keep the momentum going, more workshop sessions have now been planned. These will focus on finalising the schedule. Player retentions and direct signings will also be discussed. So will a fresh review of playing conditions for the next season.

With season 11 now wrapped up, all eyes are already on what comes next. Officials say the goal is to build on this year’s success. The aim is to make PSL 12 an even bigger draw for fans everywhere.

    Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken difficult decisions to put Pakistan on the path of development. The minister also welcomed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. He said the agreement was a source of pride for the nation. Malik said Pakistan’s next major target should be economic progress. He stressed the need to achieve stronger results in the economic sector. The petroleum minister also indicated that there could be positive news regarding petroleum product prices. He said a reduction in prices could provide relief to consumers. Malik further said Pakistan had emerged as an important country for regional peace and security. He praised the capabilities and professionalism of the country’s armed forces. He said the world had witnessed the skills and operational capabilities of Pakistan’s military. He added that these capabilities had strengthened Pakistan’s role in promoting regional stability. The minister also acknowledged the economic difficulties faced by Pakistan during the Iran-US conflict. He said the situation created challenges for the country at the economic level. Malik maintained that Pakistan must now focus on economic achievements. He said stronger economic performance would be an important step towards securing long-term national progress.

    Michigan cyclosporiasis outbreak grows as health officials expand investigation

    Michigan has reported a sharp increase in cases of cyclosporiasis as health authorities continue to monitor one of the largest outbreaks of the intestinal illness in recent years. According to the latest update from the state’s health department, the total number of reported cases has climbed to 9,253, an increase of 1,077 infections since the previous report issued on Friday. The outbreak has led to 160 hospitalizations across the state. However, officials said no deaths have been recorded so far. Public health authorities are continuing to track new infections while working with federal agencies to identify the source of the outbreak and prevent additional cases. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite. People usually become infected after consuming food or water contaminated with human waste. Raw fruits and vegetables are among the most common sources of infection because they are often eaten without cooking, allowing the parasite to survive if proper food safety measures are not followed. The outbreak in Michigan is part of a wider public health concern affecting several states across the United States. Federal data show that 4,173 laboratory confirmed domestic cases have been recorded nationwide. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reviewing more than 7,400 suspected cases that have not yet been confirmed through laboratory testing. Many of these reports have come from Michigan and neighboring Ohio. The US Food and Drug Administration and the CDC have expanded their joint investigation after identifying additional infections in four more states. Health officials are focusing on a possible link between the outbreak and shredded iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico. The investigation now includes cases reported in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Authorities are examining distribution records and supply chains to determine how contaminated produce may have reached consumers in different parts of the country. According to the FDA, epidemiological data collected by the CDC indicate that 1,947 people infected with the Cyclospora parasite had eaten food from Taco Bell restaurants before becoming ill. Investigators believe many of those infections may be connected to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and served at Taco Bell locations. However, officials say the investigation is still ongoing and a final conclusion has not yet been reached. Health experts have reported cases of cyclosporiasis in at least 41 states this year, although not all infections are believed to be related to the current outbreak. Investigators are continuing to determine which cases are connected to the suspected contaminated lettuce and which may have originated from other sources. Symptoms of cyclosporiasis often include prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue and loss of appetite. While most people recover with appropriate treatment, the illness can be more serious for older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Health authorities continue to advise consumers to follow food safety practices and remain alert for symptoms as the investigation into the outbreak continues.

    KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Ameer Munem Zafar has accused government authorities of deliberately weakening the investigation into the Mir Raza Ali case, calling for the immediate arrest of those responsible. He alleged that the government machinery was instead being used to undermine the case. Turning to Karachi’s civic problems, the JI leader said a large part of the city was facing a severe water shortage. He accused the Water Corporation of becoming a centre of corruption and criticised the recent increase in water prices. Zafar also expressed concern over the city’s water supply from the Hub Canal, saying the situation had become evident to residents. He further criticised the disruption caused by the Red Line project, saying Karachi’s citizens were being subjected to considerable difficulties in the name of development.
