Michigan cyclosporiasis outbreak grows as health officials expand investigation

Michigan has reported a sharp increase in cases of cyclosporiasis as health authorities continue to monitor one of the largest outbreaks of the intestinal illness in recent years. According to the latest update from the state’s health department, the total number of reported cases has climbed to 9,253, an increase of 1,077 infections since the previous report issued on Friday.

The outbreak has led to 160 hospitalizations across the state. However, officials said no deaths have been recorded so far. Public health authorities are continuing to track new infections while working with federal agencies to identify the source of the outbreak and prevent additional cases.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite. People usually become infected after consuming food or water contaminated with human waste. Raw fruits and vegetables are among the most common sources of infection because they are often eaten without cooking, allowing the parasite to survive if proper food safety measures are not followed.

The outbreak in Michigan is part of a wider public health concern affecting several states across the United States. Federal data show that 4,173 laboratory confirmed domestic cases have been recorded nationwide. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reviewing more than 7,400 suspected cases that have not yet been confirmed through laboratory testing. Many of these reports have come from Michigan and neighboring Ohio.

The US Food and Drug Administration and the CDC have expanded their joint investigation after identifying additional infections in four more states. Health officials are focusing on a possible link between the outbreak and shredded iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico.

The investigation now includes cases reported in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Authorities are examining distribution records and supply chains to determine how contaminated produce may have reached consumers in different parts of the country.

According to the FDA, epidemiological data collected by the CDC indicate that 1,947 people infected with the Cyclospora parasite had eaten food from Taco Bell restaurants before becoming ill. Investigators believe many of those infections may be connected to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and served at Taco Bell locations. However, officials say the investigation is still ongoing and a final conclusion has not yet been reached.

Health experts have reported cases of cyclosporiasis in at least 41 states this year, although not all infections are believed to be related to the current outbreak. Investigators are continuing to determine which cases are connected to the suspected contaminated lettuce and which may have originated from other sources.

Symptoms of cyclosporiasis often include prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue and loss of appetite. While most people recover with appropriate treatment, the illness can be more serious for older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Health authorities continue to advise consumers to follow food safety practices and remain alert for symptoms as the investigation into the outbreak continues.

Talks accelerate to fully reopen Strait of Hormuz

Efforts to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime trade routes, are gaining momentum as diplomatic contacts between the United States and Iran continue to show encouraging progress. According to reports preparations are underway to restore unrestricted commercial navigation through the vital waterway, with an official announcement expected within the next few hours or by Wednesday. The Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical shipping corridor connecting the Persian Gulf to international waters, carrying a significant share of the world’s crude oil, liquefied natural gas, refined petroleum products, and other essential commodities. Any disruption in traffic through the strait has immediate consequences for global energy markets and international trade. Arab television channels have claimed that discussions aimed at fully reopening the waterway have advanced considerably. The reports suggest that diplomatic negotiations have entered their final stages and that an agreement could soon be announced, allowing commercial vessels to resume normal operations after a period of uncertainty. Earlier, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also expressed optimism regarding the ongoing negotiations. Speaking to media in Washington , he said there was a strong possibility that an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be reached by Tuesday or Wednesday.Talks between Washington and Tehran are focused on ensuring the uninterrupted movement of commercial ships through the strategic passage while restoring stability to the region. During the interview, the Treasury Secretary noted that negotiations are continuing with the aim of normalizing the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz and guaranteeing safe passage for international shipping. He emphasized that both sides are engaged in discussions designed to reduce tensions and facilitate the free flow of maritime commerce. When asked whether Iran would be permitted to collect toll fees from vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, Bessent dismissed the possibility. He clarified that the proposed arrangement is based on the principle of complete freedom of navigation for all commercial vessels. According to him, the agreement is intended to ensure that ships from every nation can transit the waterway without facing additional charges or restrictions. If finalized, the agreement is expected to have far-reaching economic benefits. In addition to restoring the uninterrupted export of crude oil from Gulf producers, it would also enable the smooth transportation of fertilizers, refined petroleum products, industrial gases, and numerous other essential commodities. Industry experts believe that the reopening of the strait would significantly improve global supply chains that have been disrupted by regional tensions. Another major benefit of the proposed agreement would be the release of hundreds of commercial vessels currently delayed or stranded in the Persian Gulf due to security concerns. Allowing these ships to resume their voyages would ease congestion, reduce shipping costs, and improve delivery schedules for international trade. Economists suggest that a full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz could also help stabilize global energy markets. Increased supplies of crude oil and petroleum products would likely ease concerns over shortages, potentially leading to lower international oil prices. Reduced transportation costs could further contribute to price relief across several sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, and consumer goods. While optimism surrounding the negotiations has grown, officials have yet to announce a formal agreement. Diplomatic efforts remain ongoing, and both governments are expected to continue discussions until a final framework is approved. Observers around the world are closely monitoring developments, as the outcome of these talks could have a significant impact on global trade, energy security, and regional stability. If the anticipated agreement is reached, it would mark an important diplomatic breakthrough, restoring confidence in one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors and helping normalize commercial activity throughout the Gulf region.

Trump reveals why Secret Service changed his plane

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has confirmed that his surprise plane switch during his departure from Turkey last month was carried out on the advice of the Secret Service, amid concerns over a potential threat linked to Iran. Trump said the aircraft he had initially been expected to travel on could have faced a “greater risk,” adding that he does not trust Iran. His remarks came after reports revealed that his departure from Ankara following the NATO summit involved an elaborate security operation. According to reports, Trump publicly boarded Air Force One in front of cameras, creating the impression that he would fly out of Turkey on the presidential aircraft. However, he was later secretly transferred to a smaller C-32A military aircraft. The move was reportedly carried out using an airport catering truck to conceal his transfer. Journalists and some White House staff reportedly remained under the impression that Trump was aboard Air Force One. Reporters were also instructed to keep their window shades closed, adding to the secrecy surrounding the operation. Trump said he followed the Secret Service’s instructions when the aircraft change was made and did not challenge the security decision. The unusual operation reportedly stemmed from heightened concerns over Iranian threats against the US president. Trump’s latest comments have now confirmed key details of the previously undisclosed flight arrangement. The episode has drawn attention because of the extraordinary measures used to conceal the president’s movements. It also highlights the heightened security concerns surrounding Trump amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran. For a president whose movements are normally tracked closely by the media and security officials, the covert transfer from one aircraft to another remains one of the most unusual presidential travel episodes of the year.

Gold prices rise ahead of US inflation data

Gold prices advanced nearly 1% on Wednesday as investors reduced expectations of further monetary tightening by the US Federal Reserve and turned their attention to upcoming inflation figures that could provide fresh clues about the central bank’s next policy move. Spot gold rose 0.9% to $4,406.34 per ounce by 0330 GMT, while US gold futures for December delivery gained 0.6% to $4,466.70. The precious metal remained supported after recording strong gains in recent sessions, although prices faced technical resistance around the 100-day moving average. Gold had climbed to a 10-week high on Tuesday before retreating from the key technical level near $4,387 per ounce, marking its second decline this month. Market analysts said changing expectations for US interest rates were providing an important boost to bullion. “The primary driver for gold is the reduction in pricing of rate hikes by the Fed,” said Kelvin Wong, senior market analyst at OANDA. He added that gold had also benefited from a technical breakout above the $4,200 level late last week, which helped strengthen upward momentum and encouraged further buying. Weaker jobs data shifts Fed expectations Gold’s recent rally has been supported by signs of cooling in the US labour market. Bullion recorded its strongest weekly performance since January on Friday after employment data came in weaker than expected, prompting traders to reassess expectations for further interest-rate increases. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, markets were pricing in roughly a 50% probability of a rate hike in September, compared with about 60% before the release of the jobs report. Investors are now awaiting the latest US Consumer Price Index figures, due later on Wednesday. The inflation report could have a significant impact on expectations for the Federal Reserve’s upcoming decisions. A softer-than-expected inflation reading could reinforce expectations for a less aggressive monetary policy stance, potentially providing additional support to gold. Conversely, stronger inflation could revive concerns about higher interest rates and put pressure on non-yielding assets. Gold typically benefits from lower interest rates because bullion does not generate interest income. When borrowing costs and bond yields decline, the opportunity cost of holding gold tends to fall, making the metal more attractive to investors. However, Chicago Federal Reserve President Austan Goolsbee has cautioned that inflation remains a key concern. He said he was more worried about inflation remaining excessively high than about weakness in the labour market, highlighting the challenge facing policymakers as they balance price stability against employment conditions. Geopolitical tensions add to safe-haven demand Geopolitical developments in the Middle East also remained an important factor for financial markets. Oil prices extended their gains after the United States and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement reported separate attacks involving shipping on Tuesday. At the same time, hopes for an agreement to end the conflict involving Iran appeared to weaken. Iran has indicated that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed unless Washington agrees to its conditions, raising concerns over the potential impact on global energy supplies. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for international oil shipments, and any prolonged disruption could increase energy prices and intensify inflationary pressures worldwide. Such uncertainty can also encourage demand for traditional safe-haven assets such as gold. Silver, platinum and palladium also advance Other precious metals followed gold higher during Wednesday’s session. Spot silver gained 1.2% to $65.46 per ounce. The metal remained below Tuesday’s peak, which marked its highest level since June 22. Platinum also strengthened, rising 0.6% to $1,754.10 per ounce, while palladium advanced 0.8% to $1,370.86.
