Protest erupts in Washington over Netanyahu visit

WASHINGTON: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington has sparked a fresh wave of protests, with demonstrators taking to the streets to oppose U.S. support for Israel and demand that the Israeli leader be arrested.

Pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in the U.S. capital carrying Palestinian flags and banners criticising Washington’s backing of Israel. The demonstrations came as Netanyahu arrived in the United States for a scheduled meeting with President Donald Trump.

At the heart of the protest was a demand that U.S. authorities enforce the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Netanyahu. Demonstrators argued that the United States should not provide protection to an Israeli leader facing allegations before the international court.

The protest reflects the wider political and public debate in the United States over Washington’s relationship with Israel and its approach to the conflict in Gaza.

Trump rules out Netanyahu arrest

The demonstrations gained additional attention because Trump has already made his position clear.

The U.S. president has said Netanyahu will not be arrested while he is in the United States, directly rejecting calls for his detention. Trump has also strongly defended Israel and Netanyahu in connection with the ongoing regional conflict.

Netanyahu’s visit comes at a particularly sensitive moment. His meeting with Trump on Tuesday is the first between the two leaders since their joint war against Iran, with tensions reportedly emerging over how the conflict should be handled.

Protest adds pressure ahead of Trump meeting

The Washington demonstration adds another layer of political pressure surrounding Netanyahu’s visit. Protesters say U.S. support for Israel should be reconsidered and that international legal proceedings should not be ignored.

The issue of Netanyahu’s potential arrest has also become prominent in U.S. politics. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said his administration is examining whether the city could enforce the ICC warrant if Netanyahu visits New York for the United Nations General Assembly in September.

For now, however, Trump’s administration has made clear that Netanyahu will not face arrest during his stay in the United States.

With protests continuing and the Trump-Netanyahu meeting attracting international attention, the visit is likely to keep the debate over Gaza, U.S.-Israel relations and international accountability firmly in the spotlight.

DG Khan victims await CM’s compensation

By MIR HUNBAL BIRMANI A heartfelt public appeal has been made to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on social media , urging her to announce financial compensation for the families of the four children who were killed and sixteen injured in the Little Scholars School tragedy in Dera Ghazi Khan on May 7, similar to the relief package announced for victims of the recent Kahna, Lahore academy roof collapse. Parents of deceased children of little scholar school roof collapse incident expressed profound grief over the tragic incident in Kahna, Lahore, where the collapse of an academy roof claimed the lives of innocent children and left several others injured. They offerd prayers for the departed souls, strength for the bereaved families, and a speedy recovery for the injured. Referring to reports that the Punjab government has announced Rs2 million each for the families of the deceased and Rs500,000 each for the injured in the Kahna tragedy, the public appeal on social media describes the decision as commendable. However, it argues that the absence of a similar announcement for the victims of the Little Scholars School tragedy in Dera Ghazi Khan has created a perception of unequal treatment . The statement notes that both incidents involved the collapse of classroom roofs, resulting in the deaths and injuries of schoolchildren. It stresses that negligence and carelessness cannot be overlooked in either case and that the victims in Dera Ghazi Khan deserve the same compassion and support extended to those in Lahore. The appeal further points out that while the Chief Minister promptly announced relief for the Kahna victims, no compensation has yet been announced for the families affected by the Dera Ghazi Khan tragedy, nor did the Chief Minister visit the city to offer condolences. It says this has caused disappointment among the bereaved families and residents of Dera Ghazi Khan. Questioning the perceived disparity, the appeal states that if the Chief Minister considers herself a mother to all the children of Punjab, then the victims of both tragedies should receive equal treatment. The appeal concludes by urging Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to announce a compensation package for the families of the deceased and injured children in the Little Scholars School tragedy. It emphasizes that while no amount of money can compensate for the loss of a child or heal the grief of the parents, such assistance would demonstrate that the government stands with all citizens equally. The statement also calls upon elected representatives from Dera Ghazi Khan and the district administration to formally recommend to the Punjab government that financial assistance be provided to the affected families.

This victory extended Pakistan’s unbeaten record across the entire six-nation tournament, which also included Kazakhstan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan. Throughout the match, Pakistan looked in complete control. Their serving was powerful, their blocking well organized, and their attacking play sharp and consistent. Bangladesh struggled to find any rhythm against such a well-rounded performance. The win marked a perfect end to the tournament for Pakistan, who finished all seven matches unbeaten and did not drop a single set throughout the competition. This also makes them the sixth-ranked team in Asia, sitting just behind Japan, Iran, Qatar, South Korea, and China. In the other major result of the day, Sri Lanka secured the bronze medal after a hard-fought five-set win over Uzbekistan in the third-place playoff. Kazakhstan finished the tournament in fifth position, while Nepal ended up at the bottom of the standings. Gold prices jump Rs3,000 per tola in Pakistan

Gold prices continued their upward trend in Pakistan on Friday, with the price of the precious metal increasing by Rs3,000 per tola in line with gains in the international market. According to the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Association (APGJA), the latest increase pushed the price of one tola of gold to Rs430,436, marking another sharp rise in the local bullion market. The increase comes amid continued strength in global gold prices and growing demand for safe-haven assets. The association also reported an increase in the price of 10 grams of gold. Following a rise of Rs2,572, the price of 10 grams reached Rs369,029. Bullion dealers said local gold prices generally move in line with international market trends and are also influenced by fluctuations in the value of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar. Any increase in global prices is usually reflected in domestic rates. In the international market, gold prices also recorded a significant gain. The price of the precious metal rose by $30 per ounce, taking it to $4,080 per ounce. The global increase provided further support to rising prices in Pakistan. Gold is widely regarded as a safe investment during periods of economic uncertainty and market volatility. As international prices continue to strengthen, local buyers and jewellers are closely monitoring market movements for further changes in bullion rates. Market analysts believe domestic gold prices will continue to follow international trends, with future movements depending on global economic conditions, investor demand and currency fluctuations. Buyers are expected to remain cautious as higher prices increase the cost of jewellery and investment purchases

Flash flood warning issued for New York, New Jersey

Authorities have issued a flash flood warning for New York City, parts of New Jersey and western Long Island as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds swept across the region, raising the threat of widespread flooding and travel disruptions. Weather officials warned that intense downpours could quickly overwhelm drainage systems, flood roads and affect low-lying areas. The flash flood warning remained in effect through Monday morning, while a broader flood watch was issued for New York City and northern and central New Jersey until the evening. Forecasters also declared a First Alert Weather Day, citing an elevated risk of flash flooding and severe thunderstorms. Moist and humid air moving into the region is expected to produce rainfall rates of one to three inches per hour, with total rainfall forecast between one and three inches. Some isolated locations could receive even higher amounts, significantly increasing the risk of flooding. In response to the severe weather threat, New York City Emergency Management activated its Flash Flood Emergency Plan. City crews were deployed to clear storm drains and catch basins in flood-prone neighbourhoods, while emergency teams were placed on standby to respond to flooded streets, fallen trees and stranded motorists. Officials warned that severe thunderstorms could also generate damaging wind gusts, increasing the possibility of power outages and hazardous driving conditions throughout the day. Meanwhile, a High Surf Advisory was issued for beaches south of New York City and across Long Island, where waves were expected to reach between six and ten feet. Authorities also warned of a high risk of dangerous rip currents and urged residents and visitors to stay out of the water until conditions improve. Temperatures were expected to remain in the low 80s under mostly cloudy skies. Weather experts forecast that storm activity would gradually weaken by Monday night, bringing an improvement in conditions.
