Typhoon Noul hits China, 715,000 evacuated

Typhoon Noul has made landfall in southern China, bringing powerful winds and heavy rainfall to Guangdong province and neighbouring Hong Kong.

The storm reached the coast of Huidong county in Huizhou, Guangdong, at around 3:50am local time on Sunday, according to China’s weather authorities.

Noul was reported to be the strongest typhoon to make landfall in China so far this year. Authorities warned that heavy rain and strong winds could continue across parts of southern Guangdong and southeastern Fujian.

More than 715,000 people in Guangdong had been moved to safer locations by early Sunday as authorities stepped up preparations for the storm. The number was more than double the evacuation figure reported a day earlier.

The typhoon brought winds of up to 110 kilometres per hour near its centre as it moved inland across Guangdong. Weather officials said the storm would gradually weaken after making landfall, but dangerous weather conditions were expected to persist.

Strong winds caused damage in several areas. Trees were uprooted in coastal Huilai county, while sections of scaffolding attached to a high-rise building in Hong Kong collapsed as Noul approached. Initial reports indicated that nobody was injured in the scaffolding incident.

The storm also severely disrupted air travel. Hong Kong’s airport authorities said around 350 flights were cancelled on Sunday because of the adverse weather.

At least nine people were injured in Hong Kong during the typhoon period, according to local authorities.

The storm also affected Taiwan, where authorities reported rainfall in parts of the southern and eastern regions. Noul was moving away from the island after passing over waters to its south.

China has faced several major tropical storms this month. Typhoon Bavi struck eastern China on July 11 after authorities evacuated more than two million people. Tropical Storm Maysak made landfall in southern China on July 3.

Iranian photojournalist Yalda Moayeri sentenced to…

An Iranian court has reportedly sentenced prominent photojournalist Yalda Moayeri to 15 years in prison in absentia, in a case involving allegations of activities against Iran and working in the interests of Israel and the United States. According to reports, the case was brought under an Iranian espionage-related law introduced in 2025. The allegations reportedly include giving interviews to foreign media outlets and providing photographs to organizations allegedly connected with the United States and Israel. Authorities also accused Moayeri of using her journalistic work and material published online to advance what they described as the interests of Israel and the United States. However, Reuters reportedly noted that the contents of the court documents could not be independently verified. The court handed down the 15-year sentence while Moayeri was not present at the proceedings. She has reportedly been given 10 days to appeal the decision. In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the confiscation of her cameras, mobile phones and other electronic equipment. The ruling also reportedly restricts her from participating in cultural and media activities, holding public office and posting on social media. Moayeri has disputed the circumstances of the proceedings. She said she was unable to attend the trial because she had not received formal notification about the hearing. According to her account, when she went to Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, she was not given complete case documents, while a colleague had to copy details of the charges by hand. The photojournalist also said Iranian security forces raided her Tehran home in February and confiscated her mobile phone, laptop, cameras and other equipment. A press freedom organization reported that personnel affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps searched her home on February 3 and seized electronic devices. Moayeri has previously faced legal action in Iran because of her journalistic work. She was arrested in September 2022 while covering nationwide protests that followed the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody. Her arrest occurred during the protests that became associated with the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement. She was released on bail in December 2022. She has continued documenting political developments and protests in Iran. In early 2026, her photographs from protests were published by the French newspaper Le Monde, while reports indicated that authorities subsequently searched her home and continued legal proceedings against her. The latest sentence has drawn attention because of its potential implications for press freedom and the ability of journalists to document events in Iran. The case remains subject to appeal, while independent verification of the Iranian court’s allegations remains limited.

Government cuts petrol price by Rs3.19, diesel by …

The federal government has announced a reduction in petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices for August 7, providing limited relief to consumers amid continued fluctuations in international oil markets. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum, petrol prices have been reduced by Rs3.19 per litre, bringing the new price to Rs329.82 per litre. Meanwhile, the price of high-speed diesel has been lowered by Rs1.50 per litre and will now be available at Rs382.36 per litre. The latest adjustment comes just one day after the government increased petrol prices by Rs4.45 per litre while reducing HSD prices by Rs2 per litre for August 6. The frequent revisions reflect the country’s newly introduced fuel pricing mechanism, which allows daily adjustments based on international market movements. The government introduced the daily fuel price review system on July 17 in response to volatility in global oil prices following renewed tensions in the Middle East. Under the new mechanism, domestic fuel prices are calculated using a seven-day average of international petroleum rates in line with global pricing practices. Pakistan remains highly dependent on imported petroleum products, making domestic fuel prices vulnerable to changes in international crude oil markets. According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2024-25, petroleum products represent one of the country’s largest import categories. Any rise in global oil prices increases Pakistan’s import bill, puts pressure on foreign exchange reserves, and contributes to inflation. In previous years, fuel prices were managed through government subsidies and administrative controls. While such measures provided short-term relief for consumers, they also increased financial pressure on the national budget, oil marketing companies, and refineries. Higher subsidies contributed to fiscal challenges and increased public borrowing. Global factors continue to influence oil prices, including decisions by oil-producing nations, conflicts in energy-producing regions, sanctions, and disruptions in major shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. International crude prices recently moved higher after reports that an Iranian parliamentary committee was considering measures affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude futures increased by more than $3 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures also recorded gains. Market analysts said traders remain focused on geopolitical developments and negotiations involving major oil-producing countries. Since a significant portion of global energy supplies previously moved through the Strait of Hormuz, any disruption in the route could immediately affect crude prices and fuel costs worldwide. The latest reduction in Pakistan’s fuel prices is expected to offer temporary relief to motorists and businesses, although future adjustments will continue to depend on international oil market trends.

Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid spark wedding buzz a…

Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid have become the center of intense wedding speculation after the couple was photographed in Paris wearing matching gold bands on their ring fingers. The new photos quickly sent social media into a frenzy, with many fans wondering whether the Hollywood actor and the supermodel had secretly tied the knot during a private ceremony in Europe. However, despite the growing rumors, neither Cooper nor Hadid has publicly confirmed that they are married.  The couple was spotted enjoying a relaxed outing in Paris, where photographers captured them wearing coordinating gold rings while spending time together. Their matching jewelry immediately caught the attention of fans, who interpreted the bands as possible wedding rings. The appearance has fueled widespread speculation, although representatives for the couple have remained silent on the rumors.  According to People, the rings have been identified as wedding bands from the French luxury jewelry house Boucheron. Hadid was seen wearing the Quatre Radiant Edition Wedding Band, while Cooper wore the Godron Pink Gold Wedding Band. Although the designs are traditionally marketed as wedding rings, wearing them does not necessarily confirm that the pair have exchanged vows.  Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid first sparked romance rumors in October 2023. Since then, the two have gradually become more comfortable sharing glimpses of their relationship in public. Over the past three years, they have attended major events together, traveled across Europe, and supported each other’s careers while largely keeping their romance out of the spotlight.  The latest Paris appearance has only intensified interest in the couple’s relationship. Fashion observers also noted how coordinated their outfits looked throughout the trip, further highlighting how their personal styles have evolved together. While the matching rings became the biggest talking point, many fans also praised the pair’s effortless chemistry during their outings around the French capital.  Despite the excitement, there is currently no official confirmation that Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid have secretly married. Most reports describe the situation as speculation based on the rings and the couple’s recent appearance. Until either star addresses the rumors publicly, the reports of a private European wedding remain unverified.  Whether the rings symbolize marriage, an engagement, or simply a meaningful commitment, one thing is clear: Cooper and Hadid continue to attract attention wherever they go. Their relationship has steadily grown stronger while remaining relatively private, a rarity in Hollywood. For now, fans will have to wait for an official statement. Until then, the mystery surrounding the matching gold bands is likely to keep wedding rumors alive, making Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid one of the entertainment world’s most talked-about couples.
