Emi Martinez hints at Argentina retirement after World Cup final

BUENOS AIRES: Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano “Emi” Martinez has hinted that his international career could be nearing its end following Argentina’s heartbreaking 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.

The 33-year-old shot-stopper shared an emotional message on social media after the loss, suggesting it may be time to consider stepping away from international football after years of success with La Albiceleste.

“I dreamed we’d win it again. I dreamed of bringing the trophy back to Argentina and making history once more,” Martinez wrote on Instagram.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper admitted the defeat was one of the most painful moments of his career, saying he had given everything to help Argentina defend the world title they won in Qatar in 2022.

“The truth is, the pain is hard to explain. There are many things to reflect on and how to move forward, and if it’s time to step aside,” he said, adding, “I’m so sorry. I truly tried my best to help my country and my teammates.”

Martinez featured in all eight matches of Argentina’s World Cup campaign, keeping two clean sheets while conceding eight goals. Despite the final defeat, he was widely regarded as one of Argentina’s standout performers throughout the tournament.

In the final against Spain, Martinez produced a series of crucial saves to keep his side in contention as Spain dominated large periods of the match. However, his resistance was finally broken in extra time when Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, sealing Spain’s victory.

Martinez has earned 67 international caps since making his Argentina debut and has played a central role in one of the country’s most successful eras. Alongside the 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, he helped Argentina win multiple major international titles and claimed the Golden Glove award as the best goalkeeper at the Qatar World Cup.

The experienced goalkeeper has also been recognised at club level, winning the prestigious Yashin Trophy in both 2023 and 2024 as the world’s best goalkeeper.

Although Martinez remains under contract with Aston Villa until 2029, he has recently been linked with a potential move to Italian giants Juventus.

His emotional message has sparked speculation over whether the World Cup final marked the end of an unforgettable chapter with Argentina, though no official retirement decision has yet been announced.

    Pakistan rejects EU GSP+ report, defends reform re…

    Pakistan has expressed disappointment over the European Union’s latest assessment of the country’s performance under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), saying the report does not accurately reflect the scale of reforms implemented over the past several years. Speaking during the weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan appreciates that the report acknowledges the country’s legislative progress and continued implementation of the 27 international conventions linked to the GSP+ programme. However, he said the overall assessment presents an unbalanced picture by placing greater emphasis on areas where progress has been slower while overlooking broader reforms. Andrabi said Pakistan has introduced wide-ranging legal, administrative, and institutional reforms since joining the GSP+ scheme in 2014. He maintained that these reforms have strengthened governance, improved labour protections, promoted human rights, and supported sustainable economic development. The spokesperson described GSP+ as one of the most important pillars of Pakistan’s economic partnership with the European Union. He said the preferential trade arrangement has played a significant role in boosting exports, creating employment opportunities, increasing women’s participation in the workforce, reducing poverty, and supporting economic growth. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to constructive dialogue with the European Commission and other European institutions. According to Andrabi, the government remains fully committed to implementing international conventions and continuing reforms aimed at meeting its obligations under the GSP+ framework. He also highlighted that Pakistan’s cooperation with the European Union extends beyond trade. Both sides continue to work together in areas including climate resilience, migration, regional security, counterterrorism, development, connectivity, education, and economic cooperation. During the same briefing, the Foreign Office also rejected allegations made in a recent Amnesty International report regarding Pakistani military strikes in Kabul earlier this year. Andrabi said Pakistan completely rejects the claims, arguing that the report contains serious allegations without credible evidence. He maintained that any military action taken by Pakistan was carried out solely in self-defence and targeted terrorist hideouts and logistical facilities. He said the operations were conducted only after other options had been exhausted and fully complied with the principles of necessity, distinction, proportionality, and precaution under international law. He added that Pakistan exercised restraint despite facing repeated cross-border terrorist attacks. The spokesperson urged the international community to focus greater attention on militant groups operating from Afghan territory. He said organisations such as the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), and other affiliated groups continue to maintain bases and carry out attacks against Pakistan from across the border. Andrabi called on the Afghan Taliban authorities to fulfil their international commitments by preventing terrorist organisations from using Afghan territory for attacks against neighbouring countries. He said the continued presence of militant groups poses a serious threat to regional peace and security. The Foreign Office reiterated that Pakistan reserves the right to take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its citizens. Andrabi said no responsible state can ignore repeated attacks on its people and security forces.

    Iran rejects talks on ceasefire extension

    Pakistan is making diplomatic efforts to help extend the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, as the current truce is scheduled to expire on Sunday, August 16. Sources said Islamabad is trying to use the understanding reached under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding to encourage both sides to maintain the ceasefire and return to negotiations. According to the sources, mediators believe additional time is needed to bridge differences between Washington and Tehran. Diplomatic efforts are therefore continuing to prevent the situation from deteriorating after the current ceasefire period ends. However, an Iranian senior official gave a different assessment of the situation. The official said there have been no discussions between Iran and the United States regarding an extension of the ceasefire. Iran has maintained that Washington must return to the agreement and honour its previous commitments. Tehran has also demanded a clear and credible timeline for the implementation of those commitments before any further understanding can be reached. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has made strong statements about the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Trump claimed that the United States now has complete control over the vital waterway and said Iran has limited options to challenge the American naval blockade. The Strait of Hormuz remains a major international shipping route and plays a crucial role in global energy supplies. Any prolonged disruption in the waterway could have serious consequences for oil and gas markets and international trade. Iranian military officials have warned that a renewed US offensive could lead to a wider confrontation. An Iranian military spokesman said energy transmission networks, power plants and infrastructure connected to the global internet could become targets if American military action resumes. The warning has raised concerns that any collapse of the ceasefire could expand the conflict beyond conventional military targets and affect critical infrastructure. Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed hope that additional countries will join the Makkah Defence Agreement. He indicated that broader participation could strengthen regional security cooperation. In another development, US Central Command said a Panama-flagged cargo vessel attempting to breach the naval blockade was disabled after a US helicopter fired a missile at the ship. The incident has further highlighted the risks facing commercial shipping in the region amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran. Separately, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi discussed the situation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in a telephone conversation. Takaichi called for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened once negotiations between Iran and the United States reach a successful conclusion.

    QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti has criticised extremist elements for attempting to draw the Baloch population into a cycle of violence, saying attacks on infrastructure ultimately hurt ordinary citizens and undermine the province’s development. Speaking at the inauguration of the “Rasool-e-Rahmat (PBUH)” calligraphy exhibition, Bugti said the destruction of bridges, roads and commercial transport directly affects livelihoods and restricts economic opportunities for local communities. The chief minister said the provincial government would organise an international calligraphy exhibition, “Bayan-ul-Marsoos”, in Quetta next year, bringing together prominent artists and calligraphers from Turkey and other parts of the Islamic world. He said such international cultural events would help project Balochistan as a peaceful region with strong cultural and artistic traditions. He added that hosting major programmes around Pakistan’s Independence Day would also demonstrate the province’s potential to the international community. Discussing regional and international developments, Bugti said Pakistan’s growing cooperation with Saudi Arabia and Turkey reflected an evolving geopolitical landscape. He maintained that the defence cooperation was aimed at promoting security and peace rather than aggression. Bugti also expressed confidence in Pakistan’s future, praising the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir. He said no force could stop Pakistan from moving towards what he described as a decisive victory.
