JI threatens nationwide shutdown over petroleum le…

Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has warned the government that his party could expand its ongoing protests into a nationwide wheel-jam and shutter-down strike if the petroleum levy is not abolished.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad on Thursday, Rehman said the nationwide strike could begin after August 26, following 12th Rabiul Awwal.

He said the party would also establish protest camps in different parts of the country as part of its campaign. If the government failed to respond to its demands, he warned that JI could consider marching towards Islamabad on foot.

The JI chief said he would address the party’s sit-in in Lahore, while a public gathering was scheduled at its Karachi protest site on Friday.

Rehman said rising inflation had placed a heavy burden on ordinary citizens. He criticised the petroleum levy, describing it as an unfair additional charge on consumers.

According to him, consumers were paying around Rs80 per litre under the levy. He claimed the charge was originally introduced to support the modernisation of Pakistan’s oil refineries but that the government had collected more than Rs8 trillion through it while spending less than Rs100 billion on refinery upgrades.

He called for the immediate abolition of the levy and urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to reduce petrol and diesel prices by Rs130 per litre.

The government recently revised fuel prices, reducing the price of high-speed diesel while increasing the price of petrol.

Rehman said the JI’s protests in Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar were gaining support from traders, religious scholars, young people and members of civil society. He said the demonstrations had grown beyond the petroleum levy issue and were now highlighting broader public concerns.

He said JI would not attend government briefings as part of negotiations. Instead, he demanded that government representatives visit the protesters and engage with them directly.

The JI leader also referred to the party’s previous campaign against independent power producers. He claimed that negotiations following that protest resulted in the closure of several power projects and new agreements that saved the national exchequer Rs3.36 trillion.

He called for a review of the remaining independent power producers, arguing that negotiations could help bring down electricity costs within 12 to 18 months.

Rehman also criticised the government over the country’s growing debt, taxes and electricity prices. He claimed Pakistan’s total debt had reached Rs98 trillion and urged authorities to reduce reliance on interest-based financing.

He called for greater austerity in government spending and suggested limiting official vehicles to engines of up to 1,300cc.

The JI emir also criticised what he described as excessive privileges for the political elite while ordinary citizens continued to face rising living costs and taxes.

On provincial matters, Rehman accused successive governments in Sindh and Punjab of failing to resolve major economic and social problems.

He also criticised Punjab’s education policy and raised concerns over the outsourcing of thousands of schools.

Olivia Ponton and Joe Burrow spark romance buzz

Olivia Ponton and Joe Burrow have once again fueled speculation about their relationship after being spotted together at a Cincinnati Bengals practice. The model and the NFL quarterback, who have been romantically linked since 2024, were seen spending time together during the team’s training camp on Sunday, August 9. Their appearance together quickly caught the attention of fans, particularly because Ponton was reportedly seen having a private and relaxed conversation with Burrow on the field. A video circulating online showed the pair sitting together away from the rest of the group. Their comfortable interaction immediately sparked discussion among social media users, with many wondering whether the two are finally becoming more open about their rumored relationship. The sighting also marked a notable appearance for Ponton at a public Bengals event. Her presence at the team’s practice attracted considerable attention, with fans closely observing her interaction with Burrow. Some social media users reacted excitedly to the apparent sighting, comparing the growing interest in Burrow’s personal life to the attention previously received by other NFL stars and their partners. Others urged fans to respect the couple’s privacy and allow them to enjoy their time together without excessive public attention. The relationship rumors surrounding Ponton and Burrow first emerged in December 2024. At the time, Ponton’s name became connected to the Bengals quarterback after she was reportedly present at Burrow’s home during a burglary while he was away in Texas for a game. Reports surrounding the incident stated that Ponton was associated with Burrow and provided information about belongings that could potentially have been missing from the property. The situation brought significant public attention to Burrow’s private life and raised questions about his connection with the model. Burrow later addressed the burglary during a press conference, expressing his frustration over the loss of privacy. The football star explained that living a public life comes with certain challenges but admitted that having personal matters exposed publicly was difficult for him. He also acknowledged that privacy has always been something he values, particularly because his career naturally places him under constant public scrutiny. Despite understanding the realities that come with being a professional athlete, Burrow made it clear that unwanted attention surrounding his personal life was not easy to handle. Since the initial rumors, neither Burrow nor Ponton has publicly confirmed that they are romantically involved. The pair have largely kept their personal lives away from the spotlight, leaving fans to speculate based on their occasional public appearances and interactions. Their latest appearance at Bengals practice has therefore renewed interest in the rumored romance. While their relaxed interaction has certainly caught the attention of fans, there has still been no official confirmation from either of them regarding the nature of their relationship.

PTI social media faces internal differences, group…

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja has acknowledged that the party is facing internal differences and grouping, saying that the lack of contact with party founder Imran Khan for the past nine months has made decision-making much more difficult. In a post on X, Salman Akram Raja said that, for the first time in the party’s history, there has been no contact with Imran Khan for nine months. He said that issues and disputes that were previously resolved within minutes through the party founder’s guidance now become the subject of long discussions. His remarks suggest that the absence of the jailed PTI founder has created a leadership gap, allowing disagreements within the party to become more visible. Raja also admitted that PTI had faced what he described as a “planned campaign” to weaken the party during this period. According to him, efforts were made from within the party to create problems, but senior leaders remained united and resisted those attempts. “I am grateful to Imran Khan’s senior colleagues who stood firm against these failed attempts,” he said. The PTI secretary general also claimed that another challenge comes from social media, where he said three different groups are active against the party’s interests. According to Raja, the first group consists of people who are formally linked to the media teams of PTI’s political opponents. The second group, he said, includes people within PTI who are seeking party positions and view certain leaders as obstacles to their ambitions. His statement is being seen as a rare public acknowledgment that internal rivalries and competition for positions exist within the party. Raja said the third group includes sincere PTI supporters who genuinely want Imran Khan’s release and the party’s success. He described them as passionate young people and older supporters who may not be fully aware of all developments. He argued that while emotional slogans are easy to raise, developing and following an effective political strategy requires patience, understanding and careful planning. Referring to calls for immediate action, Raja said that a political revolution cannot be achieved simply by gathering “one truck and 20,000 to 30,000 people.” He stressed that successful movements require well-thought-out strategies rather than emotional decisions. He added that every PTI worker wants Imran Khan to be released as soon as possible, but said the party must adopt practical and successful methods instead of relying on slogans alone. Raja’s comments come at a time when PTI has faced repeated speculation about internal divisions, disagreements over strategy and criticism exchanged on social media by supporters of different leaders. While he blamed external forces for trying to weaken the party, his remarks also indicate that internal competition, differences over leadership and disagreements about political strategy have become significant challenges for PTI during the prolonged absence of direct communication with its founder. His statement is likely to fuel further debate about unity within the party as it continues to navigate political and organisational challenges.

Monica Barbaro reveals ultimate dating red flag

Actor Monica Barbaro has opened up about what she believes is the biggest warning sign in modern dating while continuing to attract attention for her relationship with actor Andrew Garfield. The 36-year-old actor shared her views during the red carpet premiere of her upcoming film One Night Only, where she was asked about relationship habits that immediately raise concerns. Barbaro said one of the clearest red flags is when a person shows no curiosity about their date and spends the entire conversation talking only about themselves. She explained that several of her friends have experienced similar situations, describing it as a common complaint in today’s dating culture. According to Barbaro, meaningful conversations require mutual interest. She said it is a warning sign when someone fails to ask even a single question about the other person, as it reflects a lack of genuine interest in getting to know them. The actor added that healthy relationships are built on communication, attentiveness and equal participation in conversations. In her view, a one-sided discussion can reveal important aspects of a person’s personality early in the relationship. Barbaro’s comments come as public interest in her romance with Andrew Garfield continues to grow. The pair first sparked dating speculation after they were seen together around the 2025 Academy Awards, with fans closely following their appearances over the past year. Most recently, Garfield attended the premiere of One Night Only to support Barbaro, further fuelling interest in their relationship. Although the couple has largely kept their personal life private, their public appearances together have continued to attract attention from fans and entertainment media. Barbaro is currently preparing for the release of One Night Only, while Garfield remains active with several upcoming film projects. Their relationship has become one of Hollywood’s most talked-about romances, even as both actors continue to focus on their careers

Gold price in Pakistan hits record high after anot…

Gold and silver prices continued their upward trend in both international and local markets, with gold reaching another historic level in Pakistan. The latest increase has pushed the price of gold per tola to a new record high, creating fresh concerns for buyers and investors. According to market data, the international bullion market witnessed another major rise on Wednesday, with gold prices increasing by $46 per ounce. Following the surge, the global gold price reached $4,114 per ounce, reflecting continued strength in the precious metals market. The impact of rising international prices was also seen in Pakistan’s local bullion markets. The price of 24-carat gold increased by Rs. 4,600 per tola, bringing the new rate to Rs. 433,836 per tola. This marks another significant jump in gold prices after gains were also recorded in the previous trading session. Similarly, the price of gold per 10 grams increased by Rs. 3,944, reaching Rs. 371,944 in local markets. The continuous rise has made gold increasingly expensive for consumers, particularly those planning weddings, investments, or savings through precious metals. Silver prices also recorded an increase alongside gold. The price of silver per tola rose by Rs. 7, reaching Rs. 6,403, while the price of 10 grams of silver increased by Rs. 6 to Rs. 5,489. Market analysts link the rise in precious metal prices to global economic factors, including investor demand for safe-haven assets, international market trends, and fluctuations affecting commodity prices. Gold is often considered a secure investment during periods of uncertainty, which can increase demand and push prices higher. The latest increase continues a trend of rising gold prices in recent days, with both global and local markets showing strong momentum. Traders and investors are closely monitoring international developments as further changes in global markets could influence gold and silver rates in Pakistan. With gold prices reaching unprecedented levels, consumers are advised to keep track of daily market updates before making major purchases. The bullion market remains sensitive to international price movements, currency changes, and economic conditions that can quickly impact local rates.
