Today, as Pakistan’s diplomatic and strategic importance continues to grow, that vision appears increasingly visible on the international stage. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir are working together to translate that vision into reality. Their close coordination has provided Pakistan with a sense of direction, unity and confidence at a time when the world itself is undergoing profound geopolitical change. The Pakistan of today is increasingly being recognised as a country whose voice matters. Jinnah envisaged a Pakistan that would not merely exist on the world map, but would stand with dignity, sovereignty and confidence among the nations of the world. His vision was of a country capable of determining its own destiny and making a meaningful contribution to international affairs. There is a powerful resonance between that vision and the Pakistan we are witnessing today. Jinnah once spoke of a future in which the world’s decisions would be influenced by Pakistan. For many years, that aspiration seemed distant. But recent developments suggest that Pakistan is moving closer to that position. From facilitating dialogue between major powers to strengthening strategic partnerships with Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and China, Pakistan is demonstrating that it can engage with countries across different geopolitical blocs while protecting its own national interests. The country’s ability to host US-Iran talks is particularly significant. In an increasingly polarised world, being trusted to provide a platform for dialogue is itself an indication of diplomatic relevance. Pakistan’s relationship with China remains a cornerstone of its foreign policy, while ties with Türkiye and Saudi Arabia continue to deepen. At the same time, engagement with the United States has entered a phase in which Washington is once again recognising Pakistan’s strategic importance. The positive remarks by US President Donald Trump about Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir have also attracted international attention. Perhaps most importantly, Pakistan is projecting itself with greater confidence. The scenes in Islamabad surrounding the inauguration of Yadgar-e-Fateh, commemorating the sacrifices and achievements associated with Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos, captured this changing mood. Political and military leaders standing together alongside the families of martyrs and veterans conveyed a powerful message that Pakistan’s strength lies in unity. As an overseas Pakistani who has lived in the West for more than two decades, this transformation is particularly striking. I have witnessed different phases of Pakistan’s image abroad. There were years when Pakistan was frequently discussed through the prism of instability, terrorism and political uncertainty. Today, the conversation is different. Pakistan is increasingly being discussed in terms of its strategic importance, diplomatic role, defence capabilities, regional influence and economic potential. This should make every Pakistani proud—but it should also make us more responsible. International recognition alone cannot build a prosperous Pakistan. The next challenge is to convert diplomatic and strategic gains into economic prosperity, stronger institutions, better education, employment opportunities and an improved quality of life for ordinary Pakistanis. That is where Jinnah’s vision must ultimately lead. At 79, Pakistan has every reason to celebrate. The country is standing taller on the world stage, and the partnership between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir has helped project a message of unity and national purpose. But this is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a new chapter. Jinnah gave Pakistan a dream. The responsibility of this generation is to turn that dream into a lasting reality.     LONDON:  Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day was celebrated with traditional enthusiasm and national spirit at the Pakistan High Commission in London, with Chairman Kashmir Committee Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon attending as the chief guest. Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Tipu Usman, hoisted the national flag to the national anthem at a ceremony attended by a large number of members of the Pakistani community, media representatives, diplomats and High Commission officials with their families. The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the reading of special messages from the President, Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan. Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Tipu Usman paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the founders of Pakistan, as well as the sacrifices made by millions of men and women during the struggle for independence. He said Pakistanis living in Britain were the country’s “true ambassadors”, playing an important role in strengthening relations between Pakistan and the UK and building bridges between the two countries. The High Commissioner also reaffirmed Pakistan’s moral, political and diplomatic support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, saying they were entitled to this right under the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. The celebrations featured national songs, while British-Pakistani soprano singer Saira Peter delivered a special performance. The enthusiastic participation of children added to the festive atmosphere. The ceremony concluded with High Commissioner Tipu Usman, Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon and other distinguished guests cutting a cake to mark Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day.

    Toxic gas leak kills eight at Bangladesh shipyard

    At least eight workers were killed and five others were reported missing after toxic gas leaked from a vessel at a shipbreaking yard in Bangladesh on Friday. The incident occurred at the Ferdous Steel Shipbreaking Yard and Recycling Factory in Chittagong, a major hub for ship dismantling on the country’s southeastern coast. Witnesses said they heard cries from inside the facility before fellow workers rushed several affected employees to nearby hospitals. Police said eight people had died while a search operation was underway for those still unaccounted for. Authorities have formed an investigation committee to determine the cause of the accident and ordered a safety audit of the shipbreaking facility. Officials said the vessel involved had previously been used to transport liquefied natural gas. Although the yard was reportedly classified as a compliant facility, fire service officials raised concerns about whether proper safety procedures had been followed before dismantling work began. According to fire service officials, vessels must be completely cleared of hazardous gases before workers begin cutting them apart. They said workers who were closest to the gas leak died, while others farther from the affected area survived. Firefighters recovered three bodies from the site and rescued several workers who were found unconscious. The injured were transported to hospitals for treatment. The shipbreaking industry along Chittagong’s coast stretches for around 25 kilometres and provides employment to tens of thousands of people. Bangladesh is one of the world’s major shipbreaking centres, but the industry has repeatedly faced criticism over workplace safety, labour conditions and environmental risks. One of the workers killed in the accident was identified as Palash Jaladas. His family was left devastated by the tragedy, with relatives saying his wife, Bhoumika Jaladas, is eight months pregnant.

    ECC to review Rs1.34 hike in dealers’ margin

    ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) is set to consider a proposal to increase the margin of petroleum dealers. The meeting will be held on Friday evening. Federal Finance Minister will chair the session. The meeting is scheduled for 6pm. According to sources, the increase in petroleum dealers’ margins is the only item on the agenda. The committee will examine a proposal for a Rs1.34 per litre increase. Petroleum dealers currently receive a margin of Rs8.64 per litre on petroleum products. If approved, the proposed increase will raise the margin to Rs9.98 per litre. The proposal comes after discussions between the government and representatives of petroleum dealers. During those talks, the government had assured dealers that their margin would be increased. Dealers have been seeking an adjustment in their margin amid rising operational expenses. They argue that higher costs have affected the profitability of their businesses. The ECC will review the proposal and decide whether the increase should be approved. The committee’s decision will determine the next steps for implementing the proposed adjustment. Any increase in the dealers’ margin could also affect the overall pricing structure of petroleum products. The final impact will depend on how the government incorporates the additional margin into the pricing mechanism.

    ISLAMABAD: Weekly inflation in Pakistan increased by 0.15% during the latest week, taking the overall annual inflation rate to 9.11%, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The statistics agency issued its weekly inflation report, showing mixed price trends for essential commodities. According to the report, prices of 20 essential items increased during the week, while nine items became cheaper. Prices of 22 commodities remained unchanged. Onion recorded the sharpest increase, with its price rising by 24.68% in one week. The price of gram lentils also increased by 3.35%. Chicken became 2.45% more expensive during the week. Prices of several other household essentials, including yogurt, garlic and tea, also recorded increases. The report showed that some major commodities became cheaper. Tomato prices declined by 1.26% during the week. Petroleum prices also decreased. Petrol became 2.35% cheaper, while diesel prices fell by 0.29%. The prices of sugar, eggs and potatoes also recorded declines during the week. The latest figures indicate continued fluctuations in the prices of essential commodities. While several food items became more expensive, reductions in petroleum prices and some food products provided some relief to consumers. The weekly inflation figures are closely monitored as they reflect short-term changes in the prices of goods commonly purchased by households. The annual inflation rate, meanwhile, provides a broader picture of price increases across the economy.
