    MLO removed after lapses in Mir Raza autopsy

    Authorities have removed Medico-Legal Officer Dr Osama from his post following an inquiry into serious shortcomings in the initial post-mortem examination of businessman Mir Raza Ali. Officials said the doctor has been directed to appear before the relevant authorities as part of an inquiry into the alleged procedural lapses. The action comes after questions were raised over the accuracy and completeness of the initial medico-legal examination. The case came under renewed scrutiny after a dispute emerged between police investigators and the Karachi police surgeon over shortcomings in the original medico-legal report. The family subsequently approached a Karachi court, seeking a fresh examination of the body. The court later permitted the exhumation of Mir Raza Ali. A second autopsy conducted after the exhumation reportedly found evidence indicating that the businessman had sustained a gunshot injury to the back. The new medical examination identified two gunshot holes in his clothing, along with several other injuries. Medical findings also reportedly included marks of violence, injuries to the feet, a fracture and a roughly 12-centimetre injury to the right thigh, as well as a deep injury and fracture around the jaw. A separate chemical examination has also added new dimensions to the investigation. According to the report, particles consistent with acid were detected on the victim’s shirt, while material associated with gunshot residue was also found. The report further indicated that efforts may have been made to conceal the victim’s identity and that fingerprints were not detected on his hands. Family lawyer Jibran Nasir has previously raised questions about the initial investigation, including the absence of an X-ray and the failure to establish the cause of death in the first examination. He has also alleged that acid burns may have damaged the victim’s face. The family has urged investigators to examine CCTV footage, digital records and other forensic evidence. Questions have also been raised over the handling of the victim’s mobile phone, smartwatch and surveillance recordings from locations linked to the case. Investigators are now examining additional evidence and locations connected to the death. Authorities have also moved to obtain the victim’s mobile data records and conduct geofencing around the relevant crime scene. The new probe team is also coordinating with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency to determine whether Mir Raza had received threats before his death. Mir Raza’s family has said it is cooperating with investigators and has provided information about several suspicious individuals and locations. His father, Mir Hussain, has expressed hope that the newly constituted investigation team will establish the facts and take the case to its logical conclusion.

    PESHAWAR: The International Youth Day 2026 celebrations in Peshawar brought together young people, educationists, social workers, civil society representatives and government officials to recognise the contribution of youth and discuss ways to create greater opportunities for them. The programme was arranged by the Directorate of Youth Affairs, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, at Sahibzada Abdul Qayum Hall, University of Peshawar. Taj Muhammad Khan Tarand, Adviser to the Chief Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, attended the event as chief guest. Muhammad Asif, Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was also present along with senior officials and youth representatives. The ceremony included the unveiling of a Youth Anthem, a panel discussion, youth-focused activities, success stories, live musical performances and the presentation of Youth Excellence Awards. The Youth Anthem was presented as a reflection of the aspirations, unity and enthusiasm of the province’s young generation. Addressing the participants, Mr Tarand said the provincial government was placing youth development among its key priorities under the leadership of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. He said the government was focusing on providing young people with opportunities in education, skills, entrepreneurship and sports. He observed that the employment challenge could not be addressed through jobs alone and that young people needed access to finance and practical support to start businesses and build independent livelihoods. Referring to the Ehsaas Naujawan Programme, Mr Tarand said young men and women were being offered interest-free financing to establish businesses. Under the scheme, loans of up to Rs500,000 are available through Akhuwat, while the Bank of Khyber is providing financing of up to Rs5 million. He said the programme’s financial ceiling had been raised from Rs3 billion to Rs5bn, allowing more young people to benefit from the initiative. The adviser encouraged young people to take advantage of government schemes and use them to build sustainable sources of income. He said successful beneficiaries had demonstrated that financial support, combined with determination and the right skills, could help young people become economically independent and create employment for others. Mr Tarand also discussed the proposed new youth policy, saying the existing policy was formulated in 2016 and required revision in view of the changing needs of young people. According to him, the government had sought direct feedback from university students and other young people during the policy formulation process. Their suggestions, he said, would help shape a policy more closely aligned with the aspirations of the province’s youth. He said Rs500 million had been earmarked in the Annual Development Programme 2026-27 for implementation of the youth policy, with spending planned on training, exposure and other youth development activities. The government was also moving ahead with the establishment of Jawan Markaz in districts across the province, he said. The centres are intended to provide facilities including internet connectivity, computer laboratories, auditoriums and training spaces for young people. Speaking about sports, Mr Tarand said the government wanted to expand opportunities for young athletes and provide them with platforms to compete at national and international levels. He highlighted the performance of KP athlete Attaullah, who secured gold medals in the 100-metre and 200-metre events at the National Junior Championship and was later selected to represent Pakistan in the United States. The adviser said the government was also seeking wider participation in sports, with separate sporting activities organised for minority communities, madrassa students and transgender people. He added that plans were also being developed for inter-school and inter-collegiate games to give more young athletes an opportunity to identify and develop their potential. The Youth Excellence Awards formed another important part of the event. Awards and certificates of appreciation were presented to young achievers, social activists and individuals recognised for their contributions to society, community development and youth empowerment. Among those honoured were Hassan Nisar, Founder and CEO of Metrix Pakistan, and Ammad Ali, CEO of RankingGrow, besides several other young achievers from across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The panel discussion focused on the challenges confronting young people and the opportunities available to them. Speakers and participants discussed education, skills development, entrepreneurship, technology, innovation and the need for greater exposure and participation in social and economic activities. Director Youth Affairs Abbas Khan Afridi said the event was organised to recognise the achievements of young people and provide them with a platform to express their views and share their experiences. He said the Directorate of Youth Affairs was working to connect young people with opportunities in skills development, education, entrepreneurship, sports and other areas. “KP’s youth have talent, energy and ideas. Our role is to provide them with the right platforms and opportunities so they can turn their potential into meaningful achievements,” Mr Afridi said. He added that the Directorate would continue to organise programmes across the province aimed at bringing young people together, encouraging learning and creating platforms where they could showcase their abilities. The event ended with live musical performances and a celebration of the achievements of the province’s young people. The International Youth Day celebrations underlined the importance of investing in youth and creating space for their participation in the social, economic and civic life of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.     Balochistan postpones launch of Sariab-Kuchlak Peo…

    QUETTA: The Balochistan Transport Department has confirmed that the inauguration of the People’s Train service between Sariab and Kuchlak has been postponed. Balochistan Transport Secretary Hayat Kakar said seven stations have been established along the 32-kilometre route between Sariab and Kuchlak to facilitate the new train service. He said the inauguration was delayed because the specially prepared train coaches have not yet reached Quetta. The launch ceremony had been scheduled to take place at Quetta Railway Station on August 14. According to Kakar, the coaches for the People’s Train have been prepared at the Carriage Factory in Islamabad. However, their arrival in Quetta has been delayed. He said the provincial government, federal government and Pakistan Railways would consult each other before announcing a new date for the inauguration. The Balochistan Transport Department said the People’s Train project has been completed at an estimated cost of Rs4 billion. The new service is expected to improve public transport connectivity between Sariab and Kuchlak and provide an additional commuting option for residents along the route.

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Finance Ministry has reported a significant slowdown in the country’s debt growth, saying the rate of increase fell to its lowest level in two decades during fiscal year 2025-26. According to the ministry, Pakistan’s debt increased by only 7.7 per cent during 2025-26, compared with an average annual growth rate of around 16 per cent over the past 20 years. The ministry said the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio also improved, falling to 68.3 per cent from 75 per cent in fiscal year 2022-23. Between 2019 and 2021, the ratio had remained between 86 and 88 per cent. Pakistan’s external debt-to-GDP ratio also declined to 21.5 per cent, which the ministry described as the lowest level in nine years. The country’s foreign exchange reserves have meanwhile increased substantially, rising from $2.9 billion to $18.4 billion, according to the ministry. The Finance Ministry said Pakistan also repaid Rs4.72 trillion in debt ahead of schedule. It added that annual interest expenditure on government debt declined by nearly Rs2 trillion. The burden of interest payments on government revenue also fell sharply, from 61 per cent to 35 per cent, indicating an improvement in the government’s fiscal position. The ministry further said Pakistan has recorded a primary budget surplus for three consecutive years, reflecting continued efforts to strengthen fiscal management and control expenditure. Pakistan has also returned to international capital markets after a four-year gap. The country’s Panda Bond reportedly attracted demand nearly five times higher than the amount offered, indicating strong investor interest. The ministry also highlighted Pakistan’s improved credit outlook. S&P Global Ratings has maintained Pakistan’s rating at B with a stable outlook, with the ministry describing the current rating as the agency’s highest level for Pakistan in nearly nine years.

The details obtained by Express News show that one lender, identified as Abid, had allegedly given Mir Raza more than Rs17.5 million (Rs1.75 crore). Another individual, identified as Muni, had reportedly lent him Rs500,000 (Rs5 lakh). Authorities have compiled the financial information concerning all 10 lenders and are expected to question them about their dealings with Mir Raza, including the nature of the loans, outstanding amounts and their last interactions with the deceased. The financial trail has emerged as an important part of the investigation following questions surrounding Mir Raza’s death. His body was recovered from Gulistan-e-Johar on July 29, 2026. The death was initially allegedly presented as a suicide, but concerns were later raised following protests and observations by the police surgeon. On August 8, the body was exhumed for a fresh medical examination. An eight-member medical board subsequently prepared a report detailing its findings about the cause of death. Following the medical team’s report, the government changed the investigation team. A new team was formed under the leadership of Aamir Farooqi. Two additional members were also included in the team following a request submitted by Mir Raza’s parents and lawyer. The latest development indicates that investigators are now examining not only the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza’s death but also his financial relationships and outstanding debts. Questioning the 10 lenders could help investigators establish whether any financial dispute, pressure or other connection may have played a role in the case. However, the identities of most of the lenders and the exact amounts allegedly owed to each person have not been publicly disclosed in the available report. Under the newly adjusted tariffs, petrol will now sell at Rs324.98 per litre, whereas HSD will cost consumers Rs382.79 per litre. According to official directives issued by the Petroleum Division, the revised rates take effect immediately for August 13. Fuel prices experienced an unprecedented surge following the breakout of the US-Iran conflict in late February. HSD, which traded around Rs281 per litre before the geopolitical crisis, climbed sharply to reach an all-time peak of Rs520.35 on April 3 before gradually retreating. Similarly, petrol prices escalated from Rs266 in early March to a maximum height of Rs458.41 on the same April date before cooling down to present levels. In a structural shift to handle ongoing market volatility, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik revealed that fuel pricing will transition to a daily adjustment mechanism. While the government had temporarily relied on weekly pricing revisions and targeted subsidy schemes since March to buffer against Middle Eastern supply disruptions, authority over price setting has now been formally handed over to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). Under the approval of the Prime Minister and the federal cabinet, OGRA will directly track daily international market fluctuations to determine local retail costs. However, this policy pivot has met swift pushback from commercial stakeholders. The All Pakistan Dealers Association strongly rejected the transition to daily rate changes, warning that the organization is formulating a formal protest strategy to oppose the decision.   The economic stakes of these pricing shifts remain high across every level of society.     Gastroenteritis and Cholera cases rise in Lahore

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Health Lahore, Dr Asif Niazi, said that gastroenteritis cases were being reported at basic health centres, dispensaries and district health units. According to him, approximately 7,000 people were affected by gastroenteritis during the month of July. Dr Niazi further revealed that basic health centres were receiving an average of 271 gastroenteritis patients every day. He said that a significant proportion of those affected were children, with most patients falling between the ages of five and 10. The increasing number of cases has also been observed at major teaching hospitals in Lahore. Senior Medical Officer Dr Mustafa Kamal said that patients suffering from gastroenteritis and cholera were being brought to teaching hospitals for treatment. He stated that Sir Ganga Ram Hospital was receiving between 150 and 200 such patients within a 24-hour period. According to Dr Kamal, a high incidence of dysentery is one of the major symptoms associated with cholera. He added that cholera cases were also being reported in the emergency department and outpatient department of Mayo Hospital. The health officials have linked the rise in gastrointestinal diseases to unsafe drinking water and unhygienic food. Senior Medical Officer Dr Kazim said that contaminated water was one of the major factors contributing to the spread of cholera and other gastrointestinal illnesses. He also warned against consuming food sold by roadside vendors, saying that unhygienic food from carts and stalls could increase the risk of cholera and diarrhoea. According to the medical officer, ice sold in local markets could also be a potential source of contamination and may contribute to the spread of cholera and diarrhoea. Health experts have repeatedly emphasized the importance of clean drinking water, proper sanitation and food hygiene in preventing waterborne diseases. Gastroenteritis can cause symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dehydration, while cholera can become particularly dangerous if severe dehydration is not treated promptly. The situation is particularly concerning for children, who can become dehydrated quickly after repeated episodes of diarrhoea or vomiting. With most reported gastroenteritis patients reportedly between five and 10 years of age, health authorities and families may need to pay particular attention to children’s water and food consumption. Residents have been advised to take precautions by drinking safe and properly treated water, maintaining hand hygiene and avoiding food and beverages prepared under unhygienic conditions. Particular caution may also be necessary when purchasing ice, as contaminated water used in its preparation can potentially transmit waterborne infections. The rising number of cases has highlighted the need for improved monitoring of drinking-water sources, food outlets and roadside vendors in Lahore and its surrounding areas.     15-year-old boy killed in mazda truck accident in …

    A 15-year-old boy was killed after a Mazda truck collided with his motorcycle near Chamra Chowrangi in Karachi’s Korangi area on Wednesday. According to Express News, the teenage motorcyclist died at the scene following the collision. His body was shifted to Jinnah Hospital for the completion of legal and medical procedures. Rescue officials identified the deceased as 15-year-old Sagar, son of Rajab. Police said the teenager was riding the motorcycle himself when the accident occurred. Korangi Industrial Area SHO Hukam Dad said the incident took place after the motorcycle was struck by a Mazda truck. Police arrested the truck driver shortly after the accident and took the vehicle into custody. Authorities have launched a further investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision. The teenager was a resident of Korangi, according to police. After the completion of the necessary legal procedures, his body was handed over to his family. The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety in Karachi, particularly involving heavy vehicles and young motorcyclists. Traffic accidents involving trucks and motorcycles can have devastating consequences because of the significant difference in size and weight between the vehicles.
