Germany weighs tougher rules on sick leave

BERLIN: Germany is considering tougher rules for workers taking sick leave, but researchers warn that stricter requirements may not address the deeper reasons behind the country’s high absenteeism.

German employees took an average of around 22 sick days in 2024. The figure is among the highest reported internationally.

The government’s proposed changes are part of a wider effort to improve productivity. Germany is dealing with an ageing population and years of weak economic growth.

Under the proposed changes, employers could require workers to provide a medical certificate from the first day of absence. Telephone-based sick notes could also be scrapped.

However, researchers say the debate should focus on why workers are becoming ill rather than simply making it harder to take sick leave.

Healthcare, education and social services are among the sectors reporting the highest levels of absenteeism.

Workers in these fields often face heavy workloads. They also deal with staff shortages, emotional pressure and difficult working conditions.

BKK data shows that women working in healthcare and social work took an average of 27 sick days in 2024. Teachers recorded around 24 days.

The figures were lower in several other sectors. Workers in finance averaged about 18 days, while employees in communications recorded around 16 days.

Researchers say mental health is an important part of the problem.

Mental health-related cases represent a relatively small share of total sickness cases. However, they often result in much longer absences.

Data from AOK shows that sick-leave days linked to mental health problems have increased by 47% since 2014.

Mental health conditions are now one of the biggest causes of prolonged absence after respiratory illnesses.

Experts say burnout and exhaustion can develop without reaching the level of a diagnosed mental disorder.

Healthcare workers and teachers are particularly exposed to these pressures. They carry significant responsibilities while dealing with emotional and sometimes physical challenges.

Teachers have reported violence and aggressive behaviour in schools. A 2024 survey found that almost half had experienced psychological or physical violence among pupils at their schools.

More than one-third also reported feeling emotionally exhausted several times a week.

Nursing faces similar difficulties. Germany has a shortage of healthcare workers, but studies indicate that wage growth has remained limited in some hospitals and public institutions.

Researchers describe the situation as an imbalance between effort and reward. Workers face high demands but may receive relatively low pay, limited career opportunities and insufficient recognition.

Studies have linked such conditions to mental health problems and long-term sickness absence.

However, experts caution against blaming Germany’s absenteeism solely on workplace stress.

Sick leave is affected by many factors. These include the age of the workforce, working conditions, social attitudes and differences in healthcare systems.

Germany also has generous sick-pay provisions. Workers can generally receive full wages during the initial period of illness.

Several other European countries, however, report even higher levels of sick leave among full-time employees.

Researchers have also found little evidence of widespread abuse of sick-note rules.

A study by DAK and the IGES Institute found that the sharp rise in recorded absences in 2022 was largely linked to improved electronic reporting and unusually high levels of respiratory infections and Covid-19.

Sick-leave levels have since stabilised.

Researchers also found no clear evidence that telephone sick notes introduced during the pandemic caused the increase.

The government’s proposal has faced opposition from labour representatives. The Verdi services union has described the plan as creating a culture of distrust towards employees.

Doctors have also warned that tougher certification requirements could put additional pressure on already busy medical practices.

The government has defended its approach. It says employers would have the option of requiring certificates from the first day of illness while allowing companies to retain existing arrangements.

The debate is therefore moving beyond the question of whether German workers take too many sick days.

Researchers argue that reducing absenteeism in the long term may require better staffing, improved working conditions, stronger career prospects and greater support for workers facing emotional pressure.

Public figures are often judged not only for their professional achievements but also for how they speak about others. In Pakistan’s entertainment industry, several well-known personalities have sparked backlash after making controversial comments about fellow celebrities. While many of them built strong reputations through years of successful work, repeated public criticism and high-profile disputes have affected how sections of the audience view them. Veteran actor Firdous Jamal is one such example. Widely respected for memorable performances in television dramas, he found himself at the center of controversy after making remarks about actress Mahira Khan’s age and suitability for leading roles. His comments drew widespread criticism from both fans and members of the entertainment industry. In the years that followed, he continued making critical statements about several actors and industry veterans, further fueling debate. Personal family matters that became public also contributed to the negative attention surrounding him. Acclaimed writer Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar has also remained a frequent topic of discussion due to his outspoken views. Known for penning some of Pakistan’s biggest television hits, he has often generated headlines for controversial interviews and public disagreements. His criticism of fellow celebrities, debates over social issues, and several personal controversies have divided public opinion, with supporters praising his honesty while critics accuse him of unnecessary hostility. Television host Nadia Khan, once celebrated as one of Pakistan’s pioneering morning show presenters, has faced criticism in recent years for her role as a drama reviewer. Her reviews, impersonations, and candid remarks about actors and television serials have often gone viral. While many viewers appreciate her straightforward opinions, others believe her comments sometimes cross the line and unfairly target fellow artists. Actor and producer Fahad Mustafa also came under public scrutiny after responding to comments made by senior actress Atiqa Odho regarding casting choices. His remarks during the exchange were widely criticized on social media, with many users describing them as disrespectful and ageist. The controversy prompted significant online debate and placed the star under intense public attention. Veteran actress, director, and filmmaker Sangeeta has similarly attracted criticism over her public statements. Some of her comments about fellow celebrities and revelations about past industry relationships were viewed as unnecessary by many fans. More recently, her remarks regarding actress Naeema Butt also generated discussion on social media, leading to mixed reactions from audiences. Television anchor Iqrar Ul Hassan, known for investigative journalism, has also seen his public image become increasingly polarizing. While he earned widespread recognition through his reporting career, his involvement in political matters, public disputes, and controversies surrounding his personal life have led to divided opinions among viewers. Viral incidents and outspoken statements have continued to keep him in the headlines. Media personality Dr. Omer Adil, once admired for hosting cultural and entertainment programs, has built a strong online presence through podcasts and YouTube discussions. However, his frequent criticism of celebrities and commentary on entertainment industry figures have changed how some longtime followers perceive him. Although he continues to attract viewers with his opinions, his style has also invited criticism from those who believe his remarks have become overly confrontational. These controversies highlight how public statements can significantly influence a celebrity’s reputation. In today’s digital era, where interviews and social media clips spread rapidly, even a single comment can shape public perception and spark widespread debate across the entertainment industry.

Elon Musk takes brutal dig at actress Anne Hathawa…

Elon Musk has sparked fresh controversy after taking aim at actress Anne Hathaway over a speech she delivered nearly eight years ago in support of LGBTQ+ rights. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO criticized Hathaway on X after clips from her 2018 Human Rights Campaign National Dinner speech resurfaced online and gained renewed attention.  The debate began when marketing professor Gad Saad shared criticism of Hathaway’s remarks from the event. Responding to the post, Musk dismissed the actress in blunt terms, writing, “She’s just a marionette. Whoever wrote her speech is the real douchebag.” In separate posts, he also suggested Hathaway was simply reading a script and accused her of lacking independent thought.  Hathaway’s original speech was delivered in September 2018 after she received the National Ally for Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign. During her address, the Oscar winner spoke about equality and urged people to reject discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and race. She also encouraged audiences to embrace empathy and treat others with dignity and respect.  Although the speech was widely praised at the time, a short clip recently resurfaced on social media, introducing it to a new audience. The video quickly went viral, triggering intense debate online and drawing reactions from supporters and critics alike. Musk’s comments added fuel to the discussion, with many users defending Hathaway while others echoed his criticism.  As of now, Hathaway has not publicly responded to Musk’s remarks. Her representatives have also remained silent on the renewed backlash surrounding the years-old speech.  The exchange highlights how old public statements can resurface and generate fresh controversy years later, particularly when amplified through social media. It also reflects the increasingly polarized conversations surrounding cultural and political issues online, where comments from high-profile figures often become major talking points. For now, the disagreement remains confined to social media, with Musk standing by his criticism and Hathaway choosing not to engage publicly. Whether the actress will respond remains to be seen, but the episode has once again demonstrated how celebrity opinions and online platforms can reignite debates long after the original moment has passed.
