Goods transport strike enters fourth day

The nationwide strike by the All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has entered its fourth consecutive day. The continued suspension of freight services has raised concerns about possible disruptions to the supply of essential goods.

Transporters say there has been no major breakthrough in talks with the government. They have therefore decided to continue their protest.

Goods Transport Alliance President Malik Shehzad Awan said the government must take serious steps to end the deadlock. He said transporters were still willing to negotiate.

However, he stressed that talks alone would not be enough. The transporters want clear progress on their demands before ending the strike.

The ongoing protest has created uncertainty for businesses and traders. Goods transport vehicles play a key role in moving food, fuel and other essential items between cities.

A prolonged strike could affect the movement of supplies. It could also create difficulties for wholesalers, retailers and consumers.

There are concerns that shortages in some markets may push up prices. Food items could become more expensive if supplies remain disrupted for an extended period.

The transporters launched the protest over rising petroleum prices. They are also opposing the government’s policy of changing petroleum prices on a daily basis.

Malik Shehzad Awan said the transporters had not closed the door to dialogue. However, he maintained that the government must demonstrate meaningful progress.

The strike is affecting freight movement at a time when businesses depend heavily on road transport. Goods vehicles are used to supply markets across the country.

If the deadlock continues, the impact could become more visible in local markets. Traders may face delays in receiving supplies, while consumers could face higher prices.

    HANGU: Ten police personnel, including DSP City Diyar Khan, who embraced martyrdom in the terrorist attack on the Khazina Banda Check Post in Hangu, were laid to rest with full state honours on Wednesday. The funeral prayers were offered at the Police Lines, Hangu, where senior police officers, government officials, fellow policemen and local dignitaries paid tribute to the fallen heroes. According to police officials, terrorists belonging to the banned Fitna Al-Khawarij launched a coordinated assault on the Khazina Banda Check Post late Tuesday night. The attackers reportedly used quadcopters before laying siege to the check post. Police personnel stationed at the post resisted the assault bravely and continued fighting until the last moment. Upon receiving information about the attack, DSP City Diyar Khan led a reinforcement party comprising personnel from the Elite Force, RRF and Al-Barq Force. However, the police convoy was ambushed near the Khazina Banda Bridge, where heavily armed militants had already taken positions. Despite the surprise attack, the police fought courageously in defence of the country. The attack claimed the lives of 10 police personnel, including DSP Diyar Khan, while around 30 others were injured. Police officials said that during the exchange of fire, 12 to 15 terrorists were killed or wounded, and their accomplices reportedly carried the casualties towards the Zargari area. Following the incident, police and security forces launched a large scale search operation in the area. Funeral prayers for the martyrs were also held in their respective hometowns. Police Constable Nadeem was laid to rest in Sheikhan, while Constable Sanaullah was buried in Lachi, both with full state honours. Smartly turned out police contingents presented ceremonial salutes, and senior police officers, political leaders, social figures and hundreds of residents attended the funerals. Similarly, the funeral prayer of martyred police constable Abdul Saeed, a resident of Lower Dir, was offered in his native village Katan Pyan. District Police Officer Lower Dir Syed Talal Ahmad Shah and other police officers attended the ceremony and paid tribute to the martyr, assuring his family that the sacrifices of police personnel would never be forgotten. Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi paid a brief visit to Hangu and stayed at the Police Club, where he offered prayers for the departed souls of the martyrs and the early recovery of the injured personnel. However, the Chief Minister left Hangu without visiting the injured policemen undergoing treatment in hospital. His decision not to meet the wounded officers has drawn criticism and raised questions in various circles, as several injured personnel remain admitted to hospitals following the attack. In contrast, Additional IG Elite Force Muhammad Ali Gandapur visited the hospital to inquire about the health of the injured policemen. He was accompanied by Regional Commander Elite Hafiz Nazir and DSP CTD Imranuddin. Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed, Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, and Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Tariq Saeed Marwat also visited the hospital and met the injured officers. Speaking to the media, IG Zulfiqar Hameed said the police fought the terrorists with exceptional courage for several hours despite facing drone attacks. He stated that 12 to 14 terrorists were killed during the operation and confirmed that all injured policemen were in stable condition and receiving the best available medical treatment. The IG announced that recommendations would be forwarded for gallantry awards, including the Tamgha-e-Shujaat, for the martyrs and other officers who displayed extraordinary bravery during the operation. He vowed that those responsible for the attack would be brought to justice. Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah praised the courage of the police force, saying their sacrifice demonstrated their unwavering commitment to protecting the people despite grave danger. He also appreciated the district administration and hospital management for ensuring timely medical treatment for the injured. Special Assistant Tariq Saeed Marwat reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to supporting the police force financially and administratively. He said the nature of terrorism had evolved with the use of drones, adding that the government was working to equip the police with anti drone technology and other modern capabilities to effectively counter emerging security threats.

If passed, the amendment would constitutionally mandate that Swiss neutrality remain perpetual and armed, while explicitly barring non-UN sanctions and foreign military alliances. Launching the official counter-campaign on Tuesday, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis insisted the nation’s neutrality remains intact without need for restrictive legal amendments. “Switzerland has been and is neutral, and it will remain neutral,” Cassis said in a statement, adding that the proposal would severely hinder security cooperation with international partners prior to an actual crisis. Current polling indicates low public support for the initiative, with a Tamedia survey showing 54 per cent of voters opposed compared to 34 per cent in favour.

Several parts of Rawalpindi were affected by the heavy rain. Pirwadhai was among the areas that came under water. Roads and streets in low-lying localities were also affected. Rain was also reported in other parts of Punjab. Gujrat and Sialkot received thunderstorms and heavy showers. The weather conditions remained unstable in several cities. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast rain in different parts of Punjab from August 17 to 20. Authorities have warned that heavy rainfall could increase the risk of urban flooding. The weather department had already issued an alert for the sixth spell of monsoon rains across Punjab. The spell is expected to bring rain to several areas. Officials have advised residents to remain alert. People living near Nullah Lai and other vulnerable waterways have been urged to follow official instructions. Authorities are also monitoring water levels and drainage systems. Emergency measures are being taken in areas where the risk of flooding is higher. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall. They have also been urged to stay away from flooded roads, drains and fast-flowing water.

    33 Pakistanis win fully funded UK scholarships

    Thirty-three Pakistani scholars are set to pursue fully funded postgraduate studies at universities across the United Kingdom under the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes. The scholars were selected for their academic performance, leadership abilities and commitment to contributing to society. They will enrol in master’s and other postgraduate programmes in fields considered important for Pakistan’s development. Their areas of study include global health, education, governance, human rights, media and development, climate action, development economics, business, diplomacy, innovation and entrepreneurship, and biological robotics. The scholars will study at universities in several UK cities, including London, Bristol, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The British High Commission in Islamabad hosted a pre-departure reception for the selected scholars. During the event, they were briefed on academic life, living arrangements and other aspects of studying in the UK. British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott said the scholarship programmes were a strong example of cooperation between Pakistan and the United Kingdom. She said the programmes support talented individuals with leadership potential and a desire to contribute to positive change. Marriott expressed hope that the scholars would return to Pakistan with new knowledge, professional networks and ideas that could contribute to the country’s development. The British High Commission said the latest group represents the diversity of Pakistan’s talent. The scholars come from different regions and professional backgrounds.     PAC meeting reveals Rs1.06 billion embezzlement

      Islamabad: A meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) revealed a major financial irregularity involving the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO), where more than Rs1.06 billion was allegedly embezzled through the payment of salaries to ghost employees and retired staff. The disclosure was made during the committee’s review of an audit report highlighting serious financial mismanagement within the power distribution company. According to the audit findings, salaries continued to be issued in the names of non-existent employees as well as individuals who had already retired from service, resulting in a massive loss to the national exchequer. The audit report stated that the alleged embezzlement was carried out through the collusion of officials from HESCO’s Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) office, Executive Engineer (XEN) office, and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) office. The report indicated that weaknesses in internal financial controls and payroll monitoring allowed the irregular payments to continue for an extended period without detection. During the PAC meeting, members expressed serious concern over the scale of the fraud and questioned how such a significant amount of public money could be misappropriated without timely intervention. The committee emphasized the need for stronger financial oversight, transparent payroll management, and strict accountability to prevent similar incidents in the future. Responding to the audit observations, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HESCO informed the committee that disciplinary action had already been taken against officials found responsible for the irregularities. According to the CEO, four employees have been dismissed from service, including three accounts officers and one finance officer. He stated that the company has adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and financial misconduct and is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities. Officials from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) also briefed the committee on the progress of the criminal investigation. They informed lawmakers that five criminal cases had been registered in connection with the fraud. According to the FIA, more than 130 individuals were allegedly involved in the scam, either directly or indirectly, making it one of the largest payroll fraud cases uncovered in a public sector utility. Despite the registration of multiple cases, the FIA reported that only Rs130 million has been recovered so far, a small portion of the total amount allegedly embezzled. Investigators said efforts are continuing to trace the remaining funds, identify all those responsible, and recover the outstanding amount through legal proceedings. The PAC directed the relevant authorities to expedite the investigation and ensure that all individuals involved are brought to justice, regardless of their position or influence. Committee members stressed that those responsible for the misuse of public funds must be held accountable to restore public confidence in government institutions. The revelations have once again highlighted the need for comprehensive reforms in payroll management, financial auditing, and internal accountability mechanisms within state-owned organizations. The committee reiterated that transparent governance and effective oversight are essential to preventing corruption and safeguarding public resources from financial abuse.
