LESCO fails to give relief as power fluctuations hit major areas

LAHORE: The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has so far failed to bring any visible relief as frequent and increasingly severe power fluctuations have hit several areas of the provincial capital, leaving residents and commercial consumers complaining of damage to refrigerators, washing machines, air-conditioners, energy savers and other electrical appliances.

The problem has reportedly become a growing concern in several localities, including Shah Jamal, Shadman, Mozang, Band Road, Mall Road, Gawalmandi and Krishan Nagar, where residents and shopkeepers say sudden voltage fluctuations and unstable power supply have become a routine problem.

Consumers complain that fluctuations occur repeatedly, sometimes several times a day, putting expensive electrical and electronic equipment at risk. They say that while power supply interruptions are already a major inconvenience, sudden variations in voltage are causing additional financial losses to households, businesses and small shopkeepers.

Shopkeepers at Shadman Market expressed serious concern over the situation, saying commercial consumers were particularly vulnerable because their businesses depend on refrigerators, air-conditioners, washing machines, energy savers and other electrical equipment. Zeeshan and Khaqan Hussain said repeated fluctuations had become a source of anxiety for traders, who fear that costly appliances may be damaged without warning.

Similar complaints have emerged from Shah Jamal, where residents and traders have also raised concerns over unstable voltage. Fida Chishti and Ahsan Qadri said consumers were already struggling with rising electricity costs and could not afford additional expenses on repairing or replacing appliances allegedly damaged by fluctuations.

Residents in other parts of Lahore, including Mozang, Band Road, Mall Road, Gawalmandi and Krishan Nagar, have also complained about the worsening power situation. They said the issue appeared to be affecting a wider area of the city and required immediate attention from the power utility.

Consumers said the problem was particularly serious during periods of high electricity demand and extreme weather, when fluctuations and interruptions could become more frequent. They urged LESCO to inspect the affected feeders, transformers and distribution network to determine the causes of unstable voltage and take corrective measures.

The Daily Minute Mirror office has also reportedly faced appliance-related problems amid repeated power fluctuations. According to staff, incidents involving electrical equipment have occurred several times, raising concerns about the impact of unstable voltage on office operations and costly appliances.

Residents and traders said they had repeatedly submitted complaints to LESCO offices regarding power fluctuations but claimed that no significant improvement had been witnessed. They said the continued problem had created frustration among consumers, who wanted the power utility to take practical measures instead of merely registering complaints.

The consumers demanded that LESCO conduct a technical assessment of areas facing frequent fluctuations and check the condition of transformers, feeders and other components of the distribution system. They also called for an effective complaint mechanism through which consumers could promptly report voltage-related problems.

The Daily Minute Mirror contacted relevant LESCO offices to seek their response regarding the complaints, the reported appliance damage and the measures being taken to control power fluctuations, but no response was received until the filing of this report.

Consumers have appealed to LESCO authorities to take immediate notice of the situation and ensure a stable and reliable power supply across Lahore, saying that continued fluctuations were not only disrupting daily life but also placing an additional financial burden on households, businesses and commercial consumers.

FO rejects India’s criticism of AJK elections

Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) has strongly rejected India’s criticism of the ongoing Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) legislative elections, saying New Delhi has neither the legal standing nor the moral authority to question the democratic process in the region. Speaking at the weekly media briefing on Thursday, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi dismissed remarks made by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which had described the AJK elections as a “farce.” He termed India’s comments baseless, politically motivated and an attempt to undermine a democratic process being conducted under the constitutional and legal framework of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Andrabi said the elections are taking place in a peaceful, transparent and orderly manner despite security challenges, reflecting the democratic aspirations and political will of the people of AJK. He added that Pakistan remains committed to ensuring a free and fair electoral process in the region. The spokesperson said India’s criticism comes as the seventh anniversary of New Delhi’s August 5, 2019 decision to revoke the special constitutional status of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) is being observed. He maintained that those unilateral measures violated international law, relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and India’s own international commitments. He reiterated Pakistan’s position that Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognised disputed territory, whose final status should be determined through a UN-supervised plebiscite in accordance with relevant UNSC resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people. Andrabi also accused India of attempting to divert global attention from alleged human rights violations and restrictions on political freedoms in occupied Kashmir. He said references to casualty figures and other claims made by Indian authorities cannot overshadow concerns raised by the international community over the situation in the region. Responding to another question regarding India’s reaction to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar’s recent remarks on Youm-e-Istehsal, Andrabi described the Indian statement as an effort to justify its policies in occupied Kashmir. He alleged that a heavy military presence, strict security laws and demographic changes continue to affect the Muslim-majority character of the territory. He further claimed that development projects promoted by India cannot replace the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination

AJK police allege 8 officers ‘abducted&#8217…

MUZAFFARABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) police on Thursday alleged that eight highway police personnel deployed for election duty had been “abducted” by the proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), as tensions continue to simmer across the region. Police spokesperson SSP Khawar Ali Shaukat made the allegation during a televised press conference in Rawalakot, claiming that the personnel were being held by members of the group and had been subjected to what he described as “brutal abuse”. According to the spokesperson, the security personnel were attacked while carrying out their election-related duties. He claimed the officials’ families had also been threatened, allegedly being warned that the personnel would be killed if the protesters’ demands were not accepted. “We will not allow pressure to be exerted over the lives of these officials,” Shaukat said, calling for the immediate release of the personnel. He warned that authorities would take action if the officials were harmed, their release was obstructed or their families continued to receive threats. The police spokesperson also rejected the perception that the JAAC was a peaceful movement, alleging that recent incidents showed the group was willing to use violence to challenge the state’s authority and institutions. “The state is not weak,” he said, adding that authorities had exercised restraint despite the escalating tensions. Shaukat also appealed to residents to distance themselves from the group and urged parents to monitor their children, alleging that propaganda was being used to encourage young people to participate in unrest. His remarks came as AJK continues to hold elections in phases amid heightened security concerns. The region has witnessed weeks of demonstrations led by the JAAC, which has been demanding, among other things, the abolition of 12 seats in the local legislature reserved for refugees from Indian-held Kashmir. Tensions escalated on July 28 when clashes were reported between protesters and law enforcement personnel in Rawalakot and Mirpur. The violence reportedly resulted in several casualties and further intensified the political and security situation. The government has also accused elements it describes as militants of exploiting the unrest and pursuing a foreign agenda, alleging Indian financial backing. Those allegations have added another layer to an already tense political environment. Last week, AJK Information Secretary Muhammad Rashid Hanif said seven law enforcement personnel, including police and Rangers officials, had been killed during the recent unrest. Meanwhile, Thursday’s police statement has placed renewed focus on the safety of personnel deployed for election duties. Shaukat called on the JAAC to release the eight officials and warned that any further violence against state employees would trigger a firm response under the law and Constitution. The allegations have not been independently verified, and the JAAC’s response to the police claims was not included in the report.

    PML-N challenges Rathore’s victory in AJK consti…

MUZAFFARABAD: PML-N candidate Chaudhry Mohsin Aziz has challenged the election result of Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s LA-17 Haveli-Kahuta constituency, alleging irregularities in the compilation of results and seeking a recount of votes. The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission has accepted the petition for hearing and summoned the relevant parties in Muzaffarabad. Mohsin has alleged that the official result was changed through manipulation of election documents. He claimed that results received from polling stations showed him winning the constituency by a significant margin. According to his claim, the results compiled by presiding officers showed him leading by around 8,600 votes. He alleged that there was a substantial discrepancy between those results and the figures later submitted to the returning officer. The PML-N candidate said he had approached the returning officer and requested a recount but his request was rejected. He has also called on PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to support a recount. Mohsin said he would leave politics if a transparent recount showed that he had not won the constituency by a substantial margin. The disputed constituency was won by PPP candidate and AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, according to the officially issued result. Form-27 showed Rathore securing 33,872 votes, while Mohsin Aziz received 32,354 votes. Independent candidate Tariq Saeed stood third with 12,538 votes. Mohsin has disputed these figures and alleged that the result was altered after the polling process. He also alleged that armed individuals intimidated voters at some polling stations during election day. He claimed tensions increased after the rival camp realised that it could face defeat. The PML-N candidate has vowed to pursue the matter through the electoral process and said he would not accept what he described as an attempt to deprive him of his mandate. The election commission’s decision to hear the petition has formally brought the disputed result before the relevant electoral forum. The proceedings will determine whether a recount or any further action is warranted. Political tensions in the constituency have also continued following the election. Several vehicles parked along a roadside in Hoter village were reportedly vandalised. Local residents said the windows of the vehicles were smashed during an alleged attack. The vehicles were reportedly parked outside the residence of senior PPP leader Zahid Hashmi, who is also president of the International Kashmir Peace Forum Europe. According to local sources, individuals associated with the PML-N and an independent candidate were allegedly involved in the incident. The allegations have not been independently verified. Some of the affected vehicles reportedly belonged to people who had travelled from Saudi Arabia to participate in the election. The affected individuals alleged that, besides damaging their vehicles, the attackers took passports and cash from some of them.

Haripur: A minor dispute between two groups turned deadly in Haripur’s Paniyan area, leaving one brother dead and another critically injured. The incident sparked widespread public outrage, leading to a seven-hour protest against the police and the suspension of several officers. According to local sources, the confrontation reportedly began over a trivial disagreement involving people sitting outside a house. The argument quickly escalated into a violent clash between two groups, during which one young man was killed while his brother sustained critical injuries and was rushed for medical treatment.
