Nawaz Sharif looks beyond AJK: PML-N’s next poli…

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s victory in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections is more than another electoral success. It marks the return of Nawaz Sharif as the party’s undisputed political strategist and sends a clear message that his sights are now set far beyond AJK—towards the next general elections.

For months, political observers questioned whether Nawaz Sharif would ever resume an active leadership role. His recent engagement has answered that question decisively. From personally chairing meetings in Murree with party ticket holders to spearheading the election campaign, Nawaz Sharif demonstrated that he remains the final authority within PML-N.

The AJK result carries political significance because it is the first major electoral victory under his renewed leadership. It has strengthened his position within the party while boosting the morale of PML-N workers who have long awaited his full return to frontline politics.

One defining feature of Nawaz Sharif’s political career has been his ability to think several moves ahead. Those who have closely followed his journey know he rarely makes impulsive decisions. Instead, he carefully plans, builds consensus and prepares the ground long before the political battle begins. Having observed Nawaz Sharif’s politics closely over the past two decades, including during his years in London, I have found that patience and long-term planning remain his greatest political strengths.

Today, Nawaz Sharif is supported by two of the strongest pillars within the party.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif continues to lead the federal government at a time when Pakistan has emerged from severe economic challenges. His government has worked to restore macroeconomic stability, rebuild investor confidence and improve Pakistan’s international standing. Equally important has been his unwavering loyalty to his elder brother. Throughout decades of political highs and lows, Shehbaz Sharif has stood firmly beside Nawaz Sharif, rejecting opportunities that could have divided the party and instead prioritising unity.

Alongside him is Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who has evolved into the party’s most influential leader of the next generation. During PML-N’s years in opposition, she became the face of the party’s resistance, leading rallies, energising workers and keeping the party politically active during its most difficult period. Since assuming office, she has focused on governance, launching development and welfare initiatives that her supporters believe are reshaping Punjab.

With Shehbaz Sharif managing the federation and Maryam Nawaz governing Punjab, Nawaz Sharif appears free to concentrate on what has always been his greatest strength—building the party organisation. His meetings with legislators, workers and local leaders suggest that organisational consolidation is now at the heart of his strategy.

The AJK campaign may therefore be remembered as the beginning of a much larger political roadmap.

Rather than waiting for the next general election to be announced, Nawaz Sharif appears to be rebuilding PML-N from the ground up, strengthening party structures, reconnecting with workers and preparing candidates well in advance. It is a strategy that has defined many of his previous political successes.

Critics who predicted the end of Nawaz Sharif’s political career may need to revisit their assumptions. Pakistan’s political history has repeatedly shown that experienced leaders cannot be measured solely by temporary setbacks. Nawaz Sharif has returned before, and each comeback has reshaped the country’s political landscape.

The message emerging after the AJK elections is unmistakable: Nawaz Sharif is looking beyond a single electoral victory. His focus is firmly fixed on preparing PML-N for the next national political contest.

Whether one agrees with his politics or not, one reality is becoming increasingly clear: Nawaz Sharif is once again thinking several steps ahead. If history is any guide, that is when he has proved to be at his most politically effective.

Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau were spotted sharing a casual pint together, appearing in high spirits as the former Canadian prime minister looked back on his summer highlights. Trudeau, 54, posted a montage on Instagram on Friday, capturing key moments from the past few weeks. Among the images was a warm photo of him and Perry, 41, smiling together over drinks. The post also featured a photo from his meetup with Michelle and Barack Obama, along with a picture from his daughter Ella-Grace’s graduation. A family holiday snapshot rounded out the collection. In his caption, Trudeau expressed gratitude for the memorable moments and the people who made the summer feel special to him. The post came shortly after the couple was spotted arriving at a private airport in Olbia, Italy, adding yet another stop to their ongoing travels together. Trudeau and Perry have now been together for more than a year. Dating rumours first surfaced after they were seen dining together in Montreal last July. After roughly six months of speculation, the pair confirmed their relationship publicly on Instagram in December. Since then, they’ve made several joint public appearances. Earlier this summer, the couple made their red carpet debut together at the 25th Annual Tribeca Festival. They also attended the premiere of Perry’s concert film, “Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live from Paris.” Speaking about the relationship at that event, Perry told PEOPLE she feels far more grounded across many areas of her life these days. She described herself as being very much in love. She added that the concert film’s premiere took place after she’d already met the person she now calls the love of her life. According to Perry, that connection left her feeling far more anchored, especially given how easily she can otherwise feel scattered. Perry was previously in a long-term relationship with actor Orlando Bloom for nine years. The former couple, who share five-year-old daughter Daisy, ended their relationship in the middle of last year.

Mir Raza case takes new turn, SSP inspects death s…

Karachi: The investigation into the death of Mir Raza Ali took a fresh turn on Tuesday as SSP Ali Raza, a member of the newly formed investigation team, visited the location where the deceased was found. Mir Raza’s family members accompanied the SSP during the visit, where he examined the site in Gulistan-e-Johar and reviewed the spot where the body had been recovered. He also questioned the gardener who had discovered the body to obtain details about the circumstances in which it was found. Meanwhile, six samples have been received by the University of Karachi laboratory for DNA testing. Sources said four of the samples were collected from Mir Raza’s body, while two were reference samples from his parents. The laboratory is expected to release the DNA results as soon as possible. The investigation gained further significance following the emergence of an initial medical report after Mir Raza’s exhumation and post-mortem on August 8. The report reportedly identified multiple signs of injuries and possible violence on his body. According to the preliminary findings, the bullet wound was smaller on the back and larger on the front, indicating that the bullet may have entered from behind. The report also noted fractured ribs, several injuries to the head and face, and a fracture and wound measuring around 12 centimetres on the right thigh. Blood traces were also reportedly found in the tissues of the lower part of the body, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza’s death. The DNA results and ongoing investigation are expected to provide further clarity on the case.

PML-N targets 2/3 majority in AJK as final electio…

MUZAFFARABAD: With the final phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) general elections just days away, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has stepped up its campaign in Rawalakot Division, expressing confidence that it can secure a two-thirds majority in the 45-member Legislative Assembly. The party held a major election rally in Haveli on Friday as campaigning intensified ahead of the August 10 polling in Bagh and Haveli. The final phase will conclude the three-stage electoral process and determine the composition of the next AJK government. Addressing supporters, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah claimed that the results of the first two phases reflected strong public support for the PML-N. He said the party expected voters in Haveli and the three constituencies of Bagh to further strengthen its position and help it achieve the numbers required for a two-thirds majority. Sanaullah pledged that a PML-N-led government would implement its election promises and accelerate development projects in collaboration with the federal government. Referring to commitments made by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during the campaign, he said development initiatives similar to those undertaken in Punjab would be introduced in AJK. He also said PML-N President Nawaz Sharif would personally monitor major development projects in the region. Rejecting opposition allegations of electoral manipulation, Sanaullah described the first two phases as peaceful and transparent, dismissing claims of rigging as unfounded. Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam also addressed the rally, assuring voters that a future PML-N government would focus on public welfare, infrastructure and improved services. He said road connectivity and other development projects in areas close to the Line of Control would be given special priority, with the government seeking to improve infrastructure and public facilities across the region. The August 10 vote in Bagh and Haveli is expected to play a crucial role in determining whether the PML-N can translate its campaign momentum into a two-thirds majority and take the lead in forming the next AJK government.

Counter-terror operations in Balochistan neutralize 12 militants

Security forces in Pakistan have eliminated 12 high-risk terrorists during two separate operations across the southwestern province of Balochistan. According to official statements issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Armed Forces of Pakistan, the targeted anti-terror engagements took place in the districts of Washuk and Mastung as part of an intensified campaign against extremist elements operating within the region. The military reported that these synchronized Intelligence-Based Operations (IBOs) were initiated following precise tracking and surveillance of insurgent networks. The operations represent a significant operational success for law enforcement and defense personnel working to dismantle armed groups attempting to compromise regional stability. Key Highlights of the Counter-Terror Operations District Washuk: Initial tracking detected hostile movement in the area, leading to a swift operational response that resulted in six terrorists being neutralized. District Mastung: A subsequent targeted raid triggered an intense exchange of gunfire, during which six additional terrorists were eliminated and a major militant hideout was completely dismantled Total Impact: 12 terrorists killed, operational infrastructure destroyed, and significant cache of weapons and logistics seized. Breakdown of the Intelligence-Based Raids The first phase of the counter-terrorism effort unfolded in Washuk district, where security agencies identified suspicious tactical movements by a group of armed insurgents. Acting on real-time intelligence, military units deployed swiftly to intercept the suspects. Upon confronting the militants, a heavy firefight ensued, ending with the death of six terrorists before they could execute planned sabotage activities in the district. Shortly thereafter, a second high-stakes operation was executed in the Mastung district. Intelligence agencies pinpointed an active sanctuary utilized by militants as a staging ground for planning attacks against civilians and security personnel. As forces surrounded the hideout, the cornered insurgents opened fire in a desperate attempt to break through the security perimeter. The security forces responded with decisive tactical force, eliminating six militants on the spot and neutralizing the immediate threat. Following the gun battle, search teams thoroughly cleared the facility, recovering military-grade weaponry, ammunition, and explosives, while destroying the infrastructure used to harbor illegal insurgents. Strategic Significance and Broader Context The ISPR emphasized that these successful engagements reflect the unwavering commitment of the armed forces to cleanse the country of foreign-funded terrorism. Military officials reaffirmed that anti-terror operations will persist relentlessly until all hostile networks, their safe havens, and their local facilitators are completely eradicated across Pakistan.   Authorities have urged local communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as comprehensive intelligence gathering and mop-up activities continue throughout the region.

    Cambridge announces 2026 A-Level results in Pakist…

Cambridge International has released the results of its June 2026 examination session, with more than 100,000 students across Pakistan receiving their AS and A-Level results. Students from more than 850 schools in Pakistan took part in the examination session. The results were announced globally on Tuesday, with nearly 368,000 students worldwide receiving their Cambridge International AS and A-Level results. In Pakistan, thousands of students appeared for examinations in a wide range of subjects. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Business and Computer Science remained among the most popular choices. Cambridge officials congratulated students on completing their examinations and acknowledged the challenges faced by some candidates during the preparation period. Cambridge Pakistan Country Director Uzma Yousuf said this year’s results were particularly significant because some students had prepared for their examinations amid regional tensions, uncertainty and disruptions. She congratulated the students and praised teachers, parents and school communities for supporting candidates throughout the academic year. Yousuf said education should not be viewed only through examination grades. She stressed the importance of developing knowledge, confidence and practical skills that can help young people succeed in higher education, employment and their future lives. Cambridge International also said it was continuing to develop its assessment system. The organisation is working on digital examination initiatives and flexible assessment options aimed at giving students greater choice and accessibility. Cambridge qualifications are accepted by universities and educational institutions in many countries. The organisation said its international qualifications provide students with pathways to higher education both in their home countries and abroad. According to Cambridge, recent UK university application data showed that 98% of Cambridge International A-Level students who applied to British universities during the 2025 admissions cycle received at least one university offer. The organisation said its qualifications are designed to provide students with internationally recognised academic credentials while allowing them to study within their own countries. The latest results have also been announced amid concerns surrounding examination security in Pakistan during the 2026 examination cycle. Earlier this year, allegations emerged that Cambridge Mathematics examination papers had been circulated before scheduled tests. One A-Level Mathematics paper was cancelled and candidates were required to sit a replacement examination. A separate AS-Level Mathematics paper was also cancelled following reports of a leak. Further claims regarding the circulation of another Mathematics paper were later raised by students. The incidents led to calls for stronger examination security and prompted education authorities to seek investigations into the allegations. Cambridge has previously said it investigates reports concerning examination integrity and has urged students and parents to follow information released through its official channels. Meanwhile, students who appeared for the June 2026 IGCSE and O-Level examinations are expected to receive their results on August 18.
