ISLAMABAD: The Economic Policy and Business Development Think Tank, founded by former Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, Gohar Ejaz and Sir Ahmed Nawaz Sukhera, hosted a policy session showcasing the Republic Policy Governance Model, a proposed federal and democratic framework aimed at reforming Pakistan’s existing system of governance.

The session brought together policy leaders and prominent figures to discuss four books authored by Republic Policy: Fixing the Executive, Fixing the Legislature, Fixing the Judiciary, and The Bureaucratic Coup.

A New Federal Democratic Governance Model

According to Republic Policy, the proposed model seeks to establish a governance framework aligned with Pakistan’s federal constitutional structure, democratic representation, parliamentary supremacy and principles of effective public administration.

The think tank said the initiative goes beyond criticism of the existing governance system and seeks to offer a practical alternative based on constitutional supremacy, democratic accountability, federalism and stronger parliamentary institutions.

The model also addresses longstanding debates surrounding decentralisation, bureaucratic influence and the balance of power among the executive, legislature and judiciary.

Reform Agenda Draws Appreciation

Sources attending the event said the governance model and the four books received appreciation from participants, including former Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, Gohar Ejaz and Sir Ahmed Nawaz Sukhera.

A representative of Republic Policy said fundamental reforms in Pakistan’s governance system would need to become a central part of the national debate on the country’s future.

“The encouragement we received is immensely encouraging for us,” the representative said, stressing the importance of continuing discussions on structural governance reforms.

Focus on Constitutional Governance

The Economic Policy and Business Development Think Tank was established to promote policy dialogue on economic and governance issues in Pakistan. The presentation of the Republic Policy Governance Model adds a new dimension to discussions on institutional reform, decentralisation, bureaucratic overreach and parliamentary empowerment.

Republic Policy maintains that strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring governance within the framework of the Constitution are essential for improving the effectiveness and accountability of the Pakistani state.

    ECC to review Rs1.34 hike in dealers’ margin

    ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) is set to consider a proposal to increase the margin of petroleum dealers. The meeting will be held on Friday evening. Federal Finance Minister will chair the session. The meeting is scheduled for 6pm. According to sources, the increase in petroleum dealers’ margins is the only item on the agenda. The committee will examine a proposal for a Rs1.34 per litre increase. Petroleum dealers currently receive a margin of Rs8.64 per litre on petroleum products. If approved, the proposed increase will raise the margin to Rs9.98 per litre. The proposal comes after discussions between the government and representatives of petroleum dealers. During those talks, the government had assured dealers that their margin would be increased. Dealers have been seeking an adjustment in their margin amid rising operational expenses. They argue that higher costs have affected the profitability of their businesses. The ECC will review the proposal and decide whether the increase should be approved. The committee’s decision will determine the next steps for implementing the proposed adjustment. Any increase in the dealers’ margin could also affect the overall pricing structure of petroleum products. The final impact will depend on how the government incorporates the additional margin into the pricing mechanism.

    Two police personnel martyred in Lahore’s badami…

    Two police personnel were martyred after armed assailants opened fire on them in Lahore’s Badami Bagh area on Thursday evening, according to police officials. The victims were identified as Sub-Inspector Adeel and Head Constable Asad, both of whom were deployed at Lorry Adda police station. Police said the two officers were attacked within the jurisdiction of Badami Bagh police station. According to initial reports, armed assailants opened fire on the officers before fleeing the scene. Both personnel suffered critical bullet injuries and later succumbed to their wounds. Police have identified Rehan Butt as the alleged main suspect in the attack, while efforts are continuing to determine the identities and whereabouts of his suspected accomplices. DIG Operations Faisal Kamran reached the scene with a heavy police contingent and supervised the initial investigation. The area was cordoned off as investigators collected evidence and examined the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The DIG directed the SP City to ensure the immediate arrest of those involved. Police teams have been deployed across different locations and are conducting raids to apprehend Rehan Butt and the other suspects. Preliminary police information described Butt as a suspected dangerous shooter who was already wanted by authorities. Investigators are also examining whether the attack could be connected to an earlier police encounter involving his brother, Faizan Butt. Police said the case was being investigated from all angles and that further information would be released as the investigation progresses. DIG Kamran described the deaths of the two officers as a tragic loss, saying they had sacrificed their lives while carrying out their duties. He vowed that police would continue their efforts until all suspects were arrested. Punjab Inspector General of Police Abdul Karim also took notice of the incident and sought a report from the Lahore DIG Operations. He directed police to use all available resources to arrest those responsible. The IG paid tribute to the martyred officers and ordered that their bereaved families receive complete care and welfare support. According to PPL, the discovery confirms the existence of an active petroleum system in an area that had previously presented considerable exploration challenges. The find is particularly important because it demonstrates the hydrocarbon potential of the Jurassic-age Chiltan Formation, opening up new possibilities for further exploration in the region. The company said the Dolphin well has provided valuable geological evidence that could help redefine exploration prospects in the onshore swampy areas of the Lower Indus Basin, as well as their possible extensions into shallow marine zones.     LAHORE: The Punjab government has ordered a province-wide crackdown against organized professional begging networks, with Lahore set to become the first “Beggar-Free City” under a coordinated enforcement campaign. The decision came during a meeting chaired by Punjab Home Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi at the Home Department. Authorities directed relevant departments to develop a joint strategy to identify professional beggars, expose the networks operating behind them, and take action against those who force vulnerable people into begging. The Punjab Safe Cities Authority and traffic police have received special assignments to help identify and dismantle the begging mafia’s network. Officials will use modern technology, surveillance tools and human intelligence to locate key hotspots and track repeat offenders. Dr Qazi stressed that authorities must take strict action against handlers who exploit children, women and elderly people for begging. He said the government had introduced legal amendments to increase penalties and fines and discourage organized begging networks. Under the amended Punjab Vagrancy Ordinance 1958, forcing someone to beg constitutes a non-bailable offence. The home secretary directed authorities to ensure strong prosecution of arrested members of the begging mafia so that cases result in effective convictions. The meeting also called for the creation of a centralized database of professional beggars who face repeated arrests. Officials will also maintain updated records of needy and destitute people who seek assistance at welfare homes. Dr Qazi instructed authorities to identify begging hotspots across Lahore and conduct targeted operations at these locations. He further emphasized the need for close coordination among all relevant departments to eliminate organized begging networks. The government also plans to strengthen welfare homes and turn them into support centers for vulnerable members of society. Officials will improve arrangements for food, healthcare and accommodation while providing education to children staying at these facilities. The welfare homes will also offer vocational training to help deserving individuals develop skills and achieve financial independence instead of relying on begging. Dr Qazi urged civil society organizations to play an active role in supporting vulnerable communities. The home secretary appealed to citizens to report professional begging networks to police at 15. He assured the public that the authorities would keep the identities of informants confidential.     Jasprit Bumrah sidelined for Sri Lanka Tests over knee concern

    India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka. According to reports, the BCCI’s medical team advised him to take extra time to recover from a left knee issue. Bumrah will not travel with the squad for the series, which begins on August 15 in Galle.
