Pakistan, Belarus agree to expand agricultural trade through online B2B platforms

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Belarus have agreed to strengthen agricultural and food-sector cooperation by facilitating online business-to-business (B2B) engagements between companies from the two countries.

The understanding was reached during a meeting between Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain and Belarusian Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Yakovchits Aleksander. The discussions focused on expanding bilateral trade, improving business-to-business connectivity and creating new opportunities for cooperation in agriculture and food-related sectors.

Under the proposed initiative, businesses and relevant organisations from Pakistan and Belarus will be encouraged to participate in online B2B meetings. The sessions are expected to connect exporters, importers and other industry stakeholders and help them explore potential commercial partnerships.

The two countries identified a number of products with potential for increased bilateral trade, including seafood, citrus fruits, mangoes, fruit puree, potatoes, seeds and dairy products. Greater business connectivity in these areas could help companies explore new markets and diversify trade opportunities.

Focus on Agricultural Exhibitions

Pakistan and Belarus also agreed to encourage greater participation by businesses and agricultural stakeholders in food exhibitions, trade fairs and other industry events held in both countries.

Such events will provide companies with opportunities to showcase their products, establish business contacts, develop partnerships and explore investment opportunities. The initiative is also expected to help strengthen direct commercial links between businesses operating in the agricultural and food sectors.

The two sides further agreed to facilitate reciprocal visits by agricultural trade and business delegations. These exchanges are aimed at encouraging investment, sharing technical expertise and identifying areas where companies and institutions from both countries can work together.

Cooperation in Fish Farming

The meeting also discussed prospects for cooperation in fisheries, particularly fish farming and aquaculture.

Both sides agreed to promote the exchange of knowledge, technology and best practices in the sector. Cooperation in this area could support the adoption of modern aquaculture techniques while providing opportunities for technical collaboration and investment.

The initiative is expected to contribute to the development of more efficient fish-farming practices and strengthen cooperation between relevant institutions and businesses in Pakistan and Belarus.

Proposal for Agricultural Machinery Testing Centre

During the meeting, Rana Tanveer Hussain proposed the establishment of a universal agricultural machinery testing facility or centre at the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), with financial and technical assistance from Belarus.

The proposed centre would provide a platform for testing agricultural machinery and assessing its suitability for use in Pakistan’s farming sector. The Belarusian side took note of the proposal and agreed to examine the initiative further.

As part of the process, the two sides agreed to conduct a detailed assessment of the proposed facility. This will include identifying the machinery and equipment required for the centre and evaluating locations suggested by Pakistan for establishing machinery testing stations.

Pakistan and Belarus also agreed to facilitate exchange visits by highly qualified technical experts by the end of 2026. The visits are expected to help specialists assess technical requirements, exchange expertise and explore practical mechanisms for implementing the proposed cooperation.

Pakistan Seeks Practical Outcomes

Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasised the need to transform bilateral cooperation into practical commercial, technological and institutional results.

He said Pakistan was interested in expanding its engagement with Belarus in emerging areas of agriculture and food security, while creating greater opportunities for farmers, businesses, investors and technical experts.

The minister highlighted the importance of stronger institutional and private-sector linkages to ensure that agreements between the two countries translate into tangible economic benefits.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the growing cooperation between Pakistan and Belarus and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding collaboration in agriculture, food trade, fisheries, technology and agricultural machinery.

The PML-N government at the centre relies on support from several parties. The PPP remains its main ally. But during the AJK elections, the PPP repeatedly claimed the polls were unfair. The PML-N has won a simple majority to form the government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The party secured 23 out of 45 seats. This was confirmed by Rana Sanaullah, adviser to the prime minister on political affairs. Bilawal addressed PML-N directly in a video message. He asked if they could hear a sound. He said it was the countdown for the federal government beginning. He also announced a public gathering in Bagh district. He called on supporters in Poonch to prepare for a rally on August 10. He told them to get ready for his arrival. Bilawal described the elections as neither free nor fair. He called them rigged, and used strong words like bullet elections and bloody elections. Despite the results, he praised his party workers. He said the PPP had won nine seats despite the difficult circumstances. He vowed to reclaim seats he said had been stolen in Mirpur and Muzaffarabad. He said the PPP would continue its struggle and would not lose courage or leave the field. Sindh minister and senior PPP leader Sharjeel Inam Memon issued a similar warning shortly before Bilawal spoke. Memon said the countdown for the federal government had begun. He claimed PML-N had given ballot papers to its candidates two days before voting, working together with the Election Commission. Memon also alleged that the administration was ignoring complaints from the current president and prime minister of AJK. He called it historic rigging. He questioned whether top PML-N leaders, including Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, and Maryam Nawaz Sharif, had genuinely won their own seats in the 2024 elections. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar responded on Monday. He said accusations of rigging should not be made without solid evidence. He urged the PPP to show political maturity and accept the election results. His comments came a day after the second phase of voting was held in Muzaffarabad Division and refugee seats. Unofficial results showed PML-N leading in five constituencies, while PPP had won two. In the first phase, PML-N had already secured nine of the thirteen seats in Mirpur Division, with PPP winning four. Tarar said PPP should have worked harder, as it did during the Gilgit-Baltistan elections. He questioned the evidence behind Memon’s claims and said accusations should not be made without proof. He said the people of AJK voted for the party that focused on development. He advised PPP to reflect on its own performance in Sindh instead of blaming others. Tarar praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for congratulating PPP after its win in Gilgit-Baltistan. He called it an example of political tolerance. He said PML-N ran a united and strong campaign in AJK, led by Nawaz Sharif, which helped secure the party’s victory.

    Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that, in his personal opinion, Karachi and Gwadar should be directly administered as part of the federation, stressing that his remarks are intended to serve the national interest rather than any political or personal agenda. Speaking in a television interview, Asif clarified that the proposal reflects his own views and has not been discussed or approved by his party. He acknowledged that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) may agree with some of his opinions while differing on others. “I am expressing my personal opinion. I have not sought my party’s approval for these remarks,” he said. “Some of my views may be supported by the party, while others may not.” The defence minister stressed that he has no personal interest in either Karachi or Gwadar and that his comments were made solely from the perspective of what he believes is best for the country. Asif also spoke about the importance of local government systems in modern democracies. He said effective local governments play a key role in governance, public service delivery and political development. He noted that local government institutions were revived during the 1980s and argued that many leaders currently serving at the provincial and federal levels began their political careers through the local government system. According to Asif, strengthening local governance remains essential for improving democratic institutions and ensuring better administration across the country. Commenting on the country’s administrative structure, the defence minister said provinces should not be created on the basis of provincial or ethnic identities. He suggested that national unity and effective governance should remain the guiding principles in discussions on administrative reforms.
