Pakistan sees major progress in Iran-US ceasefire talks

ISLAMABAD: Significant progress has reportedly been made in Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to facilitate a ceasefire between Iran and the United States. Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on behalf of Field Marshal and Chief of Defence Forces Syed Asim Munir briefed the US Ambassador to Pakistan on important developments in the Iran-US ceasefire process.

According to sources, a high-level meeting between Field Marshal Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi following the latter’s recent visit to Iran has raised expectations of a major breakthrough. Officials described the meeting as highly significant saying that the atmosphere during the meeting was pleasant and positive.

Sources said that the tone of the meeting and the discussions suggested that “good news is likely coming soon.”

US Ambassador briefed on key developments

A video of Mohsin Naqvi’s meeting with the US Ambassador showed a cordial atmosphere between the two. According to sources, the interior minister briefed the ambassador on behalf of Field Marshal Asim Munir about significant developments aimed at reducing tensions between Iran and the United States and advancing negotiations.

Sources said the US Ambassador also showed keen interest in the developments and appeared optimistic during the meeting.

Pakistan’s key role in mediation

It may be recalled that US President Donald Trump had earlier requested Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir to play an important role in facilitating a ceasefire between Iran and the United States.

Following this, Pakistan’s military and civilian leadership accelerated diplomatic contacts including the recent visit to Tehran by Field Marshal Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

According to analysts, Pakistan’s geographical proximity to Iran and its strategic partnership with the United States give it a unique position to help reduce tensions in the region and facilitate communication between the two sides.

Final approval of both sides required

Sources while confirming much of the progress clarified that final approval from both Iran and the United States is still pending.

According to one source, since the progress remains conditional on the consent of both sides, it would not be appropriate at this stage to disclose all details or key points of the meetings between Pakistani and Iranian officials.

So far, no official announcement has been made regarding an Iran-US ceasefire. However, amid the optimistic diplomatic environment and recent contacts, expectations are growing that a major announcement regarding a ceasefire could be made soon if final approval is secured.

Islamabad has reiterated its commitment to peace in the region saying that Pakistan will continue to play a constructive role in reducing tensions and promoting regional peace.

Representatives of the Pakistan Microfinance Network reaffirmed their commitment to expanding comprehensive financial services through the Network’s platform, while the Rural Community Development Programme (RCDP) pledged its continued support for initiatives aimed at promoting the financial independence and economic well-being of minorities and women. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening partnerships and undertaking joint initiatives to promote financial inclusion, social protection, and sustainable economic opportunities for vulnerable and marginalized communities throughout Punjab.

    The Sindh government has ordered an immediate reduction in public transport fares following a significant decrease in the price of high-speed diesel. According to local media reports, the Sindh Transport Department has directed transporters to pass the full benefit of the Rs32.63 per litre reduction in diesel prices on to passengers. The directive covers buses, minibuses, coaches, vans and other public service vehicles operating across the province. Transport authorities have also instructed operators to clearly display updated fare lists at vehicles and bus terminals. The move is aimed at ensuring that passengers receive the benefit of lower fuel prices and that transporters do not continue charging fares based on previous diesel rates. Officials have further been directed to conduct daily road inspections and check public transport vehicles to monitor compliance with the new instructions. Transporters found charging passengers excessive fares could face strict action. According to the Transport Department, penalties for violations may include fines, suspension of route permits and cancellation of vehicle fitness certificates. Authorities have also been instructed to submit daily implementation reports to the Sindh Transport Department. The directive comes after the price of high-speed diesel was reduced by Rs32.63 per litre, bringing its new price to Rs363.06 per litre. The reduction is expected to lower operating costs for public transport operators and has prompted authorities to seek a corresponding reduction in passenger fares. Public transport fares are an important issue for millions of commuters, particularly low-income workers, students and daily wage earners who rely heavily on buses, minibuses and other shared transport services. The Sindh government’s decision is therefore likely to attract considerable attention from passengers who have been waiting for transport fares to reflect changes in fuel prices. The enforcement mechanism will be crucial in determining whether commuters actually receive the benefit of the diesel price reduction.     Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Member of the National Assembly Iqbal Afridi has claimed that jailed former prime minister Imran Khan told him during their last meeting that members of the party were not following his instructions. According to a video statement shared on social media by PTI Senator Faisal Javed Khan, Afridi said he met Imran Khan at Adiala Jail, where the former premier allegedly expressed frustration over the party’s internal affairs. Afridi claimed that Imran Khan told him, “Iqbal, the party is not listening to me. I say this with my hand on the Holy Quran.” The PTI lawmaker said he responded by expressing his loyalty to the party founder. Afridi claimed he told Imran Khan that anyone betraying him deserved the strongest condemnation, while referring to a political slogan from the past. Afridi further said that he never had another meeting with Imran Khan after that conversation. He claimed that if he had met him again and been told the names of those allegedly disobeying party instructions, the situation would have been different. In the video statement, Afridi also made controversial remarks, saying that if he is allowed another meeting and Imran Khan identifies individuals who are not following his directives, he would not spare them. He used threatening language while making the statement. The remarks have drawn attention on social media, although there has been no official response from PTI leadership or other party figures regarding Afridi’s claims.     ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia’s new airline, Riyadh Air, is set to launch its long-awaited flight operations to Pakistan, with the first service scheduled for August 14, coinciding with Pakistan’s Independence Day. The airline will begin direct flights to Islamabad on Friday, marking a new step in air connectivity between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Services to Lahore are scheduled to start on August 18, according to details shared ahead of the launch. Under the initial schedule, Riyadh Air will operate seven flights every week to Islamabad and three weekly flights to Lahore, giving passengers more options for direct travel between the two countries. The launch is expected to strengthen links between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, which have extensive business, tourism and people-to-people connections. A large Pakistani community also lives and works in Saudi Arabia, making regular and convenient air services particularly important. Riyadh Air plans to operate Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on its Pakistan services. The wide-body aircraft is designed for long-haul routes and is expected to provide passengers with a modern travel experience. The airline’s entry into the Pakistani market is also being viewed as potentially beneficial for the country’s aviation and employment sectors. Sources said the arrival of the new carrier could create new job opportunities and support related businesses connected to aviation and passenger services.
