UK expands Global Talent visa scheme to attract world’s top scientists and engineers

In a major boost to Britain’s science and innovation ambitions, the UK government has announced a significant expansion of its Global Talent visa programme, allowing more than 100 research-intensive companies to sponsor leading scientists and engineers from around the world.

Previously focused primarily on universities and research institutions, the expanded scheme will now enable eligible private-sector research organisations to recruit exceptional international talent directly.

The move is aimed at strengthening the UK’s position as a global leader in cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, nuclear fusion, clean energy and life sciences.

The government said attracting the world’s brightest researchers would accelerate scientific breakthroughs, support innovation-led industries and create highly skilled jobs across every region of the UK. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to boost economic growth through investment in advanced research and technology.

By widening access to the Global Talent visa route, ministers hope Britain will remain one of the world’s most attractive destinations for leading researchers, scientists and engineers amid increasing international competition for high-skilled talent.

Regulatory and law enforcement agencies have begun taking action against the network. Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) issued a cease-and-desist order against Shelbit for anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing violations, while the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) confirmed it is actively investigating the network’s digital asset transactions.

    State Bank considers scrapping Rs10 banknote

    ISLAMABAD: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is considering discontinuing the Rs10 currency note as part of plans to introduce redesigned banknotes with enhanced security features, officials told the Senate Standing Committee on Finance. The committee met in Islamabad, where SBP Deputy Governor Dr Inayat Hussain briefed members on the proposed changes to the country’s currency notes. According to the deputy governor, the central bank is considering withdrawing the Rs10 note because its production cost has increased. He said the Rs10 denomination had been targeted for discontinuation twice in the past, but the attempts were unsuccessful. He clarified that the Rs10 note would be discontinued when the new series of currency notes is issued. Committee Chairman Senator Saleem Mandviwalla said the committee had previously asked the State Bank to replace all currency notes. Dr Inayat Hussain said the existing currency series had been in circulation since 2005. Officials told the committee that new banknotes would carry improved security features. The matter had been discussed twice by the federal cabinet. A committee formed by the cabinet had also proposed certain changes to the designs. The issue of the process used to select the company for designing the new notes also came under discussion. Chairman Saleem Mandviwalla questioned the decision to award the design work to the same company whose consultant had already been hired. He said no bidding process had been conducted before the design contract was awarded. Mandviwalla said the State Bank was an autonomous institution, but it still had to follow relevant rules and procedures. A State Bank executive director told the committee that the company associated with the consultant would carry out the entire assignment. The committee also questioned claims regarding the circulation of counterfeit currency in Pakistan. Dr Inayat Hussain said the circulation of counterfeit currency in the country was low. Mandviwalla asked the State Bank to provide data supporting the claim. The deputy governor further said public preference regarding banknote designs was also being taken into consideration. Senator Anusha Rehman remarked that people generally liked currency notes regardless of their design. Senator Shahzaib Durrani, however, said personal likes and dislikes should not be a factor in deciding currency designs. Dr Inayat Hussain told the committee that a subcommittee of the federal cabinet was currently reviewing the proposed new banknotes. He said the cabinet had made significant changes to the designs. The deputy governor said the new notes could only be introduced in the market after the proposed changes were finalised and approved. He also informed the committee that the proposed currency designs had been sent to the Ministry of Finance about a year ago.

    ISLAMABAD: Preparations for the 14th South Asian Games are gaining momentum as senior Olympic officials from across the region gather in Islamabad ahead of a key meeting on the regional sporting event. The Executive Committee of the South Asian Olympic Council (SAOC) is scheduled to meet in the Pakistani capital on Sunday to review arrangements for the Games, which Pakistan is due to host early next year. Delegations from several participating countries have already arrived in Islamabad, while others are expected to reach the capital shortly. A delegation from Nepal, including National Sports Council President Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Vice-President Chaturananda Raj Vaidya and council member Sikka Suwal Shrestha, was among those welcomed by the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA). India’s representative is expected to join the executive committee meeting through video link. The visiting officials are also scheduled to inspect sports facilities in Islamabad as part of their assessment of preparations. Lahore, however, is not included in the venue inspection itinerary. Pakistan intends to hold the Games primarily in Islamabad and Lahore. Lahore will serve as the Games Secretariat and is expected to host most of the competitions, while Faisalabad will also be involved as a host city, with handball scheduled to be played there. The upcoming edition will be Pakistan’s third time hosting the South Asian Games. The country previously staged the regional competition in Islamabad in 1989 and again in 2004. The biennial Games bring together athletes from across South Asia in a wide range of sporting disciplines. Sunday’s meeting is expected to give regional officials an opportunity to assess preparations, examine venues and address remaining issues before the competition begins. With the Games approaching, the Islamabad gathering represents an important step in Pakistan’s efforts to finalise arrangements and deliver a successful regional sporting event.
