UK expands Global Talent visa scheme to attract world’s top scientists and engineers

In a major boost to Britain’s science and innovation ambitions, the UK government has announced a significant expansion of its Global Talent visa programme, allowing more than 100 research-intensive companies to sponsor leading scientists and engineers from around the world.

Previously focused primarily on universities and research institutions, the expanded scheme will now enable eligible private-sector research organisations to recruit exceptional international talent directly.

The move is aimed at strengthening the UK’s position as a global leader in cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, nuclear fusion, clean energy and life sciences.

The government said attracting the world’s brightest researchers would accelerate scientific breakthroughs, support innovation-led industries and create highly skilled jobs across every region of the UK. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to boost economic growth through investment in advanced research and technology.

By widening access to the Global Talent visa route, ministers hope Britain will remain one of the world’s most attractive destinations for leading researchers, scientists and engineers amid increasing international competition for high-skilled talent.

Natland, who previously pleaded guilty to firearms possession, was remanded in custody by Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb and is scheduled for sentencing in October.

    Iran’s Supreme leader sets ‘Primary Conditions’ for ending war with US

    Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei has declared that the “preservation of Lebanon’s territorial integrity and the absolute, unconditional termination of the Zionist regime’s aggression are the primary conditions for any agreement to end the imposed war against the aggressive US” . In a letter to Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem, the Iranian leader described Hezbollah as standing “like an unyielding rock as the forerunner of groups engaged in jihad against the savage aggression of the Zionist regime and its supporters” . He also affirmed that the Islamic Republic considers the defense of Hezbollah fighters to be its “strategic mandate” . The remarks came as part of a wider diplomatic backdrop, with a trilateral framework agreement signed by the US, Israel, and Lebanon on June 26 establishing a process for the Lebanese Armed Forces to disarm Hezbollah and dismantle its infrastructure in exchange for a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory . The Khamenei statement follows the June 15 finalization of an Iran-US memorandum of understanding, which brought a permanent halt to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and ended the US naval blockade against Iran . The new trilateral framework agreement has been described by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio as a “first step” on a difficult journey, with a “trust, but verify” mechanism requiring Lebanon to demonstrate that it can effectively rein in Hezbollah . However, the agreement has faced opposition from within Lebanon. Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah warned that Lebanese authorities would not be able to enforce the disarmament commitments without triggering conflict, stating that Hezbollah would “hold on to its weapons even more” . Netanyahu has previously claimed that Israeli forces have pushed Hezbollah back 5 to 8 miles from the border and destroyed approximately 94 percent of its missile arsenal .     DR Congo bans copper and cobalt concentrate exports to boost domestic smelting

    The Democratic Republic of Congo has banned the export of copper and cobalt concentrates, accelerating national efforts to enforce in-country mineral processing and retain greater economic value from its natural resources. The ministerial decree, signed by Mines Minister Louis Kabamba Watum, Foreign Trade Minister Julien Paluku Kahongya, and Economy Minister Daniel Mukoko Samba, takes effect immediately. The regulation revokes a previous 2023 framework and its associated exemptions, replacing them with a comprehensive structure governing mineral exports alongside a new tax regime on mining by-products. Following news of the export ban, benchmark three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange rose by up to 1.8 per cent to $14,369.50 per metric ton, approaching historic record highs. While the prohibition is absolute, the decree allows for temporary one-year waivers under specific strategic circumstances. Major mining operators, including Ivanhoe Mines, which runs the Kamoa-Kakula copper complex in partnership with Zijin Mining,indicated that domestic processing facilities, such as the on-site smelter and the Lualaba copper smelter in Kolwezi, process the majority of local yields. Analysts note that because the vast majority of Congolese copper and cobalt is already refined locally into cathodes and hydroxides prior to shipment, the new policy primarily aims to eliminate remaining concentrate exports while standardising royalty collections across trace mineral by-products.

    Punjab authorities have stepped up action against Afghan nationals living in the province without valid documents. The Foreign National Security Cell of the Punjab Home Department is carrying out checks across the province. Officials are identifying Afghan nationals who are staying without acceptable visas. Those found to be residing illegally are being detained. They are then moved to designated holding centres before being repatriated to Afghanistan. A spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department said 2,689,295 Afghan nationals have so far been repatriated from Pakistan. The spokesperson said 140,468 undocumented Afghan nationals have been sent back from Punjab alone. Officials said the action is being carried out under the government’s existing policy. Under the policy, Afghan nationals without valid and acceptable visas are considered to be staying illegally in Pakistan. The crackdown is not limited to one area. Officials are conducting checks in residential neighbourhoods and commercial markets across Punjab. The authorities are also monitoring places where foreign nationals may be living or working. The purpose is to identify people who do not have the required legal documents. The department said detained Afghan nationals are transferred to holding centres. These facilities are being used to manage the repatriation process. There are currently 39 active holding centres across Punjab. According to the department, 188 Afghan nationals are currently staying in these centres. The provincial authorities have also directed action against people who rent properties to undocumented foreign nationals. Cases can be registered against property owners found violating the relevant rules. Officials said the enforcement drive will continue across the province. Authorities are maintaining checks in different areas as part of efforts to enforce immigration regulations.
