Wildfires spread towards Bordeaux as Spain records first fire-related death

Massive wildfires continued to spread across parts of France and Spain on Saturday, forcing large-scale evacuations and stretching emergency services as firefighters battled fast-moving flames driven by strong winds and prolonged heat. In France, the fires advanced inland toward Bordeaux, prompting thousands of residents in surrounding suburbs to leave their homes. Across the border in Spain, authorities confirmed the first death linked to the ongoing wildfire crisis after an elderly man died during a brush fire near Valencia.

The fires have already displaced hundreds of thousands of people in both countries and are among the latest extreme weather disasters affecting southern Europe. Experts have linked the growing intensity of such events to prolonged dry conditions and repeated heatwaves that have become more common in recent years. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said the scale of the fires was unlike anything the country had experienced before and warned that the situation remained extremely serious.

Meteorological data shows that temperatures in the affected region of southwestern France have averaged more than 32 degrees Celsius throughout July, far above the historical average for the month. The combination of unusually high temperatures, dry vegetation and powerful winds has created ideal conditions for wildfires to spread rapidly, making it difficult for emergency crews to contain them.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said firefighters were preparing for a long and demanding operation as the flames continued to move closer to Bordeaux. To strengthen the response, the French government has deployed military support alongside local firefighting teams. One of the country’s largest military transport aircraft joined the operation by dropping fire retardant over forests engulfed by flames. Aerial firefighting efforts have become a crucial part of the emergency response as crews struggle to slow the fires from the ground.

The fires have destroyed homes and forests across the region while thick smoke has covered large areas. Around 197,000 people have been evacuated from the Gironde and Landes departments since the wildfires began earlier this week. Officials said the flames had reached within about 30 kilometers of Bordeaux. Although Bordeaux Airport remained open, transport services to and from the airport were disrupted, and the government advised people to avoid unnecessary travel in the affected region.

Many evacuees described leaving their homes with little time to prepare. Seventy-one-year-old Bernadette said she fled during the night with her two grandsons, leaving behind most of her belongings, including essential medication. She is now staying at a conference center in Bordeaux that has been converted into temporary emergency accommodation for displaced residents.

Spain is facing a similarly severe crisis. Three major wildfires, including two that merged west of Madrid, have forced authorities to declare the country’s first national wildfire emergency. Nearly 88,000 people have either been evacuated or ordered to remain indoors because of the fires. Emergency services continue to battle multiple fire fronts while high winds make containment efforts even more difficult.

The country’s first confirmed wildfire-related death occurred near Valencia, where an elderly man died in his vehicle during a smaller brush fire that was later brought under control. Spain has also received international assistance through the European Union’s emergency response system. Additional firefighting aircraft from Italy and Greece are joining planes already sent by Portugal and the Netherlands to help contain the blazes.

The situation around Madrid remains especially challenging as another wildfire in the neighboring province of Avila threatens to merge with existing fires. Firefighters are also dealing with the added difficulty of an ongoing union strike, although officials say it has had only a limited impact on staffing levels.

Spanish Health Minister Monica Garcia urged residents to avoid spending time outdoors because of the dangerous smoke. She advised people to limit physical activity outside and wear face masks if they need to leave their homes. Residents forced to evacuate described hurried departures after receiving emergency alerts. One woman from the town of Fresnedillas de la Oliva said she grabbed only a few valuables and her pet cat before leaving as thick smoke filled the sky. Authorities in both countries continue to warn that the wildfire threat remains high as hot, dry and windy conditions persist.

Pakistan will respond if India threatens water rights: PM Shehbaz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has warned that Pakistan will not compromise on its water rights, describing every drop of the country’s water as a “red line” and cautioning India against any move that threatens Pakistan’s sovereignty, security or access to water. Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad following the inauguration of a monument commemorating Pakistan’s recent military success, the prime minister said India had demonstrated its disregard for regional peace by unilaterally suspending the Indus Waters Treaty. He said Pakistan desired peace and stability in the region but would not interpret its commitment to peace as a sign of weakness. “Pakistan stands for peace with honour and dignity,” the prime minister said, adding that the country had emerged as a factor of stability in the region. Referring to the military confrontation with India in May 2025, Shehbaz Sharif praised the armed forces for their role and said the country’s response had demonstrated Pakistan’s determination to defend its territorial integrity and national interests. The prime minister specifically commended Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his leadership, while also highlighting the contributions of the Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Navy under their respective chiefs. He said the performance of the armed forces during the conflict had become a lasting part of the country’s history and represented a victory not only for the military but for the entire Pakistani nation. “This victory belongs to the people of Pakistan and its armed forces,” he said, describing the achievement as a source of national pride. Shehbaz Sharif maintained that Pakistan did not seek confrontation with any country. However, he stressed that Islamabad would respond firmly if its sovereignty or security were challenged in the future. He said the events of May 2025 had sent a clear message to the international community about Pakistan’s military capabilities and national resolve. According to the prime minister, the conflict had significantly strengthened Pakistan’s standing and demonstrated that any attempt to undermine the country’s sovereignty would carry serious consequences. Turning specifically to the water dispute, Shehbaz Sharif criticised India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, calling the move unilateral and unlawful. He warned that Pakistan’s water resources could not be treated as a bargaining tool and said Islamabad would defend its water interests. “Every drop of Pakistan’s water is a red line,” the prime minister declared, warning that if India failed to reconsider its position, Pakistan would respond directly. The prime minister’s remarks come amid heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, with water rights emerging as a particularly sensitive issue alongside longstanding disputes over security and regional stability. Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that Pakistan preferred dialogue and peace but would remain prepared to protect its national interests. He said the country’s policy was based on maintaining peace without compromising dignity, sovereignty or security. He further said the lessons of the May 2025 confrontation should not be forgotten and warned that any future miscalculation against Pakistan would invite a stronger response.

Pakistan’s Got Talent performance sparks social media backlash

Pakistan’s Got Talent, the Pakistani adaptation of the internationally recognised Got Talent franchise, has been attracting attention for showcasing performers with a wide variety of skills. The reality competition provides a platform for singers, dancers, musicians, comedians, magicians, acrobats, beatboxers and stunt performers from across the country. The first season features a judging panel consisting of Ali Zafar, Mehwish Hayat, Tabish Hashmi and Usman Bashir. The judges assess contestants on their creativity, stage presence and individual abilities as they compete for recognition on the national platform. A recent episode, however, sparked a heated debate on social media after contestant Yousha Hussain from Karachi delivered a bold belly dance performance. Yousha appeared on stage wearing feminine-style clothing, makeup and jewellery while performing to “Jey Deyo Ijazat Tey,” the OST of the Geo TV drama Shahrukh Ki Saaliyaan. The contestant’s appearance and performance quickly became a major talking point online. Viewers particularly discussed the styling and outfit, which some considered revealing, while others focused on the decision to feature the performance on mainstream television. Following the episode, several social media users criticised the programme’s producers and questioned whether such performances were appropriate for Pakistani television. Some viewers described the performance as an attempt to promote LGBTQ-related themes, while others expressed concerns about cultural and religious values. One social media user accused the programme of promoting an “LGBTQ agenda” and linked the performance to religious beliefs surrounding the punishment of the people of Lut. Another criticised the show for allegedly promoting LGBTQ themes and called the decision a “big shame.” Other comments similarly questioned whether the performance was intended to promote LGBT representation. Some users also criticised the style of belly dancing and the contestant’s clothing, arguing that the performance did not fit their understanding of Pakistani cultural and religious values. The controversy has consequently shifted attention away from the contestant’s dancing ability and towards a broader discussion about entertainment, personal expression, cultural expectations and the type of content presented on national television. While some viewers have strongly objected to the performance, the debate also highlights the increasingly intense reactions Pakistani television programmes can receive when performers challenge conventional expectations surrounding appearance, gender expression and stage performances.

Shehbaz, Bangladesh PM set for first Jakarta meeti…

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman next week in Jakarta, Indonesia. The meeting will be the first between the two leaders since Tarique Rahman assumed office as Bangladesh’s prime minister around six months ago. The meeting is being viewed as significant in light of recent regional developments. Both leaders will be in Jakarta to attend the 12th summit of the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation. The nine-member grouping is focused on strengthening economic cooperation among its member states. The three-day summit is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 17. The summit was earlier postponed in April due to the conflict that emerged in the Middle East. Leaders from member countries are now expected to gather in Jakarta for discussions on regional and economic issues. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also expected to hold a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the summit. The Pakistani prime minister is likely to meet other participating leaders as well. His expected engagements include a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The meetings are expected to provide an opportunity to discuss bilateral relations, regional developments and areas of mutual interest. The expected meeting between the Pakistani and Bangladeshi prime ministers also comes amid efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries. Both sides have shown interest in expanding cooperation in different areas. Pakistan has also decided not to seek special permission from India to use its airspace for the prime minister’s journey to Indonesia. Instead, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s aircraft will take an alternative route to reach Jakarta. The change in travel route will allow the Pakistani delegation to proceed with its scheduled participation in the D-8 summit without seeking special approval from India.

New investigation team makes key decisions in Kara…

A meeting of the investigation team probing the death of Karachi-based young businessman Mir Raza has concluded at Ferozabad Police Station, where several important decisions were taken regarding the ongoing investigation. According to investigative sources, different tasks have been assigned to members of the committee as part of the inquiry. The family of Mir Raza will be formally interviewed and their statements will be recorded. The team has also decided to record the statements of 21 individuals who were taken into custody during the investigation. Following the meeting, members of the investigation committee left for the crime scene to inspect the location and collect additional evidence. The former investigating officer will also accompany the new investigation team during the visit. Meanwhile, the new investigation team has contacted the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in connection with the case. The team has requested details of Mir Raza’s social media profiles and digital accounts to examine his online activity and determine whether it could provide any clues regarding his disappearance and death. The new team has written four letters to the NCCIA. In one of the letters, the agency was asked to conduct a forensic examination of Mir Raza’s smartwatch. The smartwatch was handed over to the NCCIA a day earlier for examination. However, the victim’s family has requested that the forensic examination of the smartwatch be conducted at a forensic laboratory in Lahore rather than by the NCCIA. The family’s lawyer, Jibran Nasir, said the smartwatch had remained in the possession of the former head of the investigation committee for several days, raising concerns about possible tampering. He demanded that the forensic examination be carried out in Lahore to ensure transparency and credibility. Earlier, on August 12, Dr Usama Sheikh, who conducted Mir Raza’s initial post-mortem examination, was removed from his position as a medico-legal officer. Officials said the doctor had committed serious errors during the initial post-mortem. He will appear before officials during an inquiry into the matter. A preliminary medical report following the exhumation and second post-mortem of Mir Raza indicated signs of physical trauma on his body. The report stated that the gunshot wound was smaller at the back and larger at the front, suggesting that the bullet may have entered from the rear. The report also revealed that Mir Raza had suffered fractured ribs and multiple injuries to his head and face. A fracture and wound approximately 12 centimetres long were found on his right thigh, while blood stains were also detected in tissues in the lower part of his body. The preliminary findings obtained after his exhumation on August 8 differed significantly from the initial post-mortem report. Evidence of a deep injury and fracture was found in his jaw, while injuries were also detected on his nasal bone and various parts of his face. Investigative sources said 17 samples were collected during the exhumation. Samples from Mir Raza’s parents were also obtained for DNA matching. The samples will be submitted to the forensic laboratory of the University of Karachi. After the samples were collected, Mir Raza was reburied on the same day, August 8. Mir Raza Ali Khan went missing from the PECHS area of Karachi on July 28. He left home at 4:09 a.m. in an online taxi, and his body was recovered from Gulistan-e-Johar two days later. Police said the body was found in a severely damaged condition and had a gunshot wound to the chest. His social media accounts had reportedly been shut down one day before his body was recovered. According to Mir Raza’s father, his son was scheduled to marry on August 30 at Bait-ul-Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and had been very happy about starting a new chapter in his life.

Salman Khan house security guard dies suddenly dur…

A Mumbai police constable posted outside Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s residence has died after reportedly falling ill while on security duty. The officer, identified as Constable Ganesh Raite, was part of the Mumbai Police team deployed outside Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartments in Mumbai. According to Indian media reports, the constable complained of feeling unwell at around 6pm on Friday while carrying out his duty. His colleagues reportedly arranged for him to be taken to a hospital shortly afterward. However, doctors declared him dead after he was brought to the medical facility. Police officials have indicated that the constable may have suffered a heart attack while on duty. However, the exact cause of death has not yet been officially established. His body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the medical report is expected to provide further details. The incident occurred as Salman Khan continues to remain under heightened security because of threats against him. The actor’s security was upgraded to the Y-Plus category in 2024 following the killing of his close friend and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique. Salman has faced repeated threats reportedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, with tensions surrounding a long-running blackbuck poaching case involving the actor. Security around Salman Khan’s residence has also been tightened following previous incidents. In April 2024, two motorcycle-borne individuals reportedly fired several rounds outside Galaxy Apartments. Investigators later linked the shooting incident to people associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi network. The latest death occurred while police personnel were continuing their security duties outside the actor’s Mumbai residence. The sudden death of Constable Ganesh Raite has raised attention because of the demanding security arrangements surrounding Salman Khan, who remains one of Bollywood’s most prominent and closely protected celebrities. Authorities are expected to establish the precise medical cause of death after the post-mortem examination. Until the medical findings are released, reports of a heart attack remain an initial assessment rather than a confirmed cause. The incident is also a reminder of the risks faced by police personnel assigned to high-profile security duties, where officers are required to maintain prolonged vigilance around protected individuals and their residences. Further details about the constable’s medical history and the circumstances surrounding his final moments are expected to emerge as the investigation and medical examination continue.
