Chehlum processions held nationwide under tight se…

Thousands of mourners across Pakistan observed the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala on Tuesday, with religious processions and gatherings taking place under extensive security arrangements in major cities.

Authorities deployed thousands of police personnel, installed surveillance systems and implemented strict traffic and security measures to ensure the peaceful observance of the occasion.

In Karachi, the central Chehlum procession began from Nishtar Park after a religious gathering. The procession is following its traditional route under a comprehensive security plan. More than 5,000 police officers and personnel have been deployed along the route, while roads leading to the procession have been sealed with containers. Senior police officials visited the route to review security arrangements and monitor the deployment.

The city administration urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, follow traffic advisories and use alternate routes to avoid inconvenience.

In Lahore, the main Chehlum procession started from Haveli Alif Shah inside Delhi Gate and is proceeding along its traditional route before concluding at Karbala Gamay Shah. More than 10,000 police personnel have been assigned to provide security. Roads and streets connected to the procession route have been secured with barriers and barbed wire, while surveillance is being carried out through CCTV cameras, drones and sniper deployment on high-rise buildings.

Officials said 43 Smart Safe City centres across Punjab are monitoring processions in real time. In Lahore alone, more than 800 surveillance cameras are being used to monitor processions, religious gatherings and other sensitive locations. Additional portable smart cameras have also been installed to strengthen security.

In Rawalpindi, the central Chehlum procession commenced from Imambargah Ashiq Hussain under heightened security, with police and other law enforcement agencies deployed throughout the route.

In Quetta, two major processions were taken out from Alamdar Road and Hazara Town to commemorate the martyrs of Karbala. More than 1,700 police personnel, supported by the Frontier Corps (FC), have been deployed to maintain law and order.

Authorities sealed procession routes and intensified security checks at entry and exit points. CCTV cameras are monitoring the routes, while a Quick Response Force has been stationed at multiple locations to respond to any emergency.

As part of the security measures, mobile phone and internet services have been temporarily suspended in several areas of Quetta.

Across the country, law enforcement agencies remain on high alert to ensure the peaceful conclusion of Chehlum processions. Authorities have appealed to the public to cooperate with security personnel and follow official instructions to help maintain peace and public safety during the religious observance.

West nile virus cases rise in Israel as two people…

A mosquito-borne disease has resurfaced in Israel, with 13 people reportedly diagnosed with West Nile fever this year and two deaths recorded. According to reports, Israel’s Ministry of Health has confirmed the presence of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus in several areas where cases have been identified. The disease is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Israel’s Ministry of Environmental Protection said mosquitoes carrying the virus were detected in the Menashe Regional Council, Ramat Hasharon and Eilat. Health officials explained that West Nile virus is generally transmitted through mosquitoes that become infected after feeding on birds carrying the virus. The infected mosquitoes can subsequently transmit the virus to humans through bites. Professor Sigal Sadeski, head of the Public Health Division, said that West Nile fever is mild in most cases and many infected people may not develop noticeable symptoms. However, the infection can become serious in some patients. Health experts warn that the virus can affect the nervous system and, in severe cases, lead to complications such as encephalitis or meningitis. The risk of severe illness is reportedly higher among people over the age of 60 and those who already have underlying health conditions. Investigation Underway Israeli authorities have launched epidemiological investigations to determine how and where the affected individuals were exposed to infected mosquitoes. Officials are also examining whether cases reported in different locations are connected and are attempting to identify areas where infected mosquitoes may have come into contact with people. The discovery of infected mosquitoes has also increased the importance of mosquito surveillance and control measures in the affected areas. Environmental authorities are expected to monitor mosquito populations and take steps aimed at reducing the risk of further transmission. Previous Outbreak in 2024 Israel also experienced a significant outbreak of West Nile virus in 2024. According to an Israeli report submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health, 916 human cases had been confirmed by September 2024, with 71 deaths reported. The latest cases have renewed concerns about the seasonal spread of West Nile virus and the potential risks posed by infected mosquitoes. While most infections are mild or may cause no obvious symptoms, severe neurological complications can occur in a small proportion of patients. Health authorities are therefore continuing surveillance and investigating the latest infections to better understand the spread of the virus. The current outbreak highlights the importance of mosquito-control measures, particularly during periods when mosquito activity is high. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring affected areas and investigating possible sources of transmission.

Ibrahim Zadran stars as Jaffna Kings beat Colombo …

Ibrahim Zadran’s brilliant 95 off 65 balls powered Jaffna Kings to a 19-run victory over Colombo Kaps in the 15th match of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Set a daunting target of 203, Colombo Kaps were restricted to 183-9 in their 20 overs. Rubin Hermann was cleaned up by Dilshan Madushanka in the second over before Sadeera Samarawickrama and Ashen Bandara steadied the innings with a 50-run partnership. Bandara made 15. The scorecard read 58-2 in seven overs when skipper Kamindu Mendis joined Samarawickrama. The duo stitched a 39-run partnership to take the total near the 100-run mark. Jaffna Kings struck back with back-to-back wickets to jolt Caps’ progress, leaving them at 97-3. The lower-order kept Caps in the hunt, but with the asking rate soaring, it was an up-and-down affair. For Jaffna Kings, Dilshan Madushanka scalped three wickets. Earlier, after losing Avishka Fernando in the second over, Kamil Mishara and Ibrahim Zadran raised a half-century stand to end the powerplay on a strong note. Mishara hit two sixes and five fours in his 44 from 19 balls. Kings’ scorecard read 68-2 in 7.1 overs when Dunith Wellalage joined Zadran at the crease. The pair added a 61-run partnership for the third wicket. Zadran scored the bulk of the runs while Wellalage contributed only 17. Ibrahim Zadran was run out in the penultimate over after scoring 95 from 65 deliveries, peppered with three sixes and 12 fours. Towhid Hridoy injected late momentum into the innings, scoring a quick-fire 31 not out off just nine balls, including 31 runs off Shahnawaz Dahani’s final over. The right-hander tonked the pacer for three consecutive sixes and another maximum on the final ball to take the total over the 200-run mark. For Colombo Kaps, James Neesham picked up two wickets while Dahani conceded 71 runs in his four overs. The victory strengthens Jaffna Kings’ position in the LPL standings as the tournament progresses.

Trump’s Board of Peace plan draws global attention and criticism

United States President Donald Trump has announced that his Board of Peace has secured an agreement aimed at the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza, along with the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory. Trump described the agreement as a historic breakthrough and said it would be carried out in stages, with Israeli troops leaving Gaza as disarmament progresses. The Board of Peace was first proposed by Trump in September last year as part of his plan to end the war in Gaza. He later expanded the initiative, saying it would also work to address conflicts in other parts of the world. The board is intended to coordinate peace efforts and oversee reconstruction projects, a role that has traditionally been led by the United Nations. According to its charter, countries joining the board normally serve three year terms. However, nations that contribute one billion dollars toward its activities are eligible for permanent membership. Trump serves as chairman of the initiative and has broad executive authority, including the power to veto decisions and remove members under certain conditions. The White House named Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and presidential adviser Jared Kushner as members of the board’s founding executive team. More than two dozen countries have joined the initiative. Alongside the United States, members include Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar, all of which have played important roles in recent Middle East diplomacy. Other participating countries include Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Outside the region, Albania, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Cambodia, El Salvador, Hungary, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Mongolia, Pakistan, Paraguay, Uzbekistan and Vietnam have also joined. Several major countries and international partners have declined to participate. Britain, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden and the European Union have all decided not to join the initiative. Brazil, Mexico, India and South Africa have also remained outside the board, while China and Russia have chosen not to participate. The Vatican has argued that responsibility for handling international conflicts should remain with the United Nations. Canada also lost its invitation after a diplomatic disagreement between Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this year. The Board of Peace received international recognition after the United Nations Security Council approved a United States drafted resolution acknowledging its temporary role in Gaza. Under the resolution, the board will coordinate funding for reconstruction and oversee a temporary international stabilisation force in Gaza through 2027. It must also report its progress to the Security Council every six months. China and Russia abstained from the vote, saying the resolution did not clearly define the United Nations’ role in Gaza’s future administration. Despite official backing, the initiative has attracted widespread criticism from human rights organisations and political observers. Critics argue that the board resembles a colonial style governing structure because it is designed to supervise Gaza without including Palestinian representatives. They have also questioned the inclusion of Tony Blair because of his role in the Iraq war and criticised the participation of countries with poor human rights records. The decision to include Israel on a body responsible for overseeing Gaza has generated additional controversy. Opponents argue that Israel’s ongoing military campaign has left much of Gaza destroyed and displaced its population. Israel maintains that its military actions were carried out in self defence following the Hamas attack in 2023 that killed around 1,200 people and resulted in more than 250 hostages being taken. Since its launch, the Board of Peace has focused mainly on plans for rebuilding Gaza. Trump said member countries have already pledged around seven billion dollars toward reconstruction, although experts estimate that restoring the territory after more than two years of conflict could cost as much as 70 billion dollars. The board has also reportedly held discussions with international companies on future infrastructure and supply chain projects as planning for Gaza’s recovery continues.
