Jamaat-e-Islami protest enters second day

Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Munim Zafar Khan has called for an immediate reduction in petrol prices, saying the government must end what he described as excessive petroleum levies that are placing an unfair financial burden on the public.

Speaking to Geo News, Zafar said the Jamaat-e-Islami’s sit-in outside the Governor House in Karachi had entered its second day. He said the protesters had presented clear demands and would continue their demonstration until the government addressed their concerns.

According to Zafar, a large number of women will join the protest at 3pm today, adding further momentum to the demonstration. He said the party plans to maintain pressure on the government over rising fuel prices, electricity bills and other issues affecting ordinary citizens.

The JI Karachi chief also demanded a forensic audit of Independent Power Producers (IPPs), arguing that the government should investigate power-sector agreements and costs to identify areas where consumers may be facing unnecessary financial pressure.

Zafar said controlling inflation should remain the government’s top priority, as rising prices continue to affect household budgets across the country. He maintained that the public should not have to bear what he termed excessive charges and levies.

He further said Jamaat-e-Islami had launched sit-ins in all four provinces and would continue its protests until the government accepted its demands.

The ongoing Karachi demonstration focuses on petroleum levies, electricity bills and broader public concerns. The party has vowed to continue the sit-in at the Governor House as part of its campaign for relief from rising living costs.

Petrol price cut in Pakistan, diesel gets more exp…

The government has announced a slight reduction in the price of petrol while increasing the price of high-speed diesel in Pakistan. The new petroleum prices will take effect from August 12, 2026, according to an official notification. Under the latest revision, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs1.70 per litre. Following the decrease, the new petrol price has been set at Rs325.92 per litre. At the same time, consumers using diesel will face a price increase. The government has raised the price of diesel by Rs1.39 per litre, taking the new rate to Rs382.25 per litre. The notification was issued by the Ministry of Energy following the latest price recommendations under the petroleum pricing mechanism. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) determines petroleum price calculations under the mechanism established by the federal government. The latest adjustment means petrol consumers will receive a modest reduction, while diesel users will have to pay more from August 12. Before the latest revision, petrol was priced at Rs327.62 per litre, while diesel was available at Rs380.86 per litre. The new rates therefore represent a Rs1.70 reduction in petrol and a Rs1.39 increase in diesel. New petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan According to the notification, the revised rates are: Petrol: Rs325.92 per litre, down Rs1.70 Diesel: Rs382.25 per litre, up Rs1.39 The revised prices will apply from August 12, 2026, under the government’s petroleum pricing mechanism. Petroleum prices remain closely watched in Pakistan because changes in fuel costs can affect transportation expenses and the prices of goods and services. Diesel prices are particularly important for commercial transport, agriculture and other sectors that depend heavily on diesel-powered machinery and vehicles. The latest decision comes as consumers continue to monitor fuel prices amid changing international oil market conditions and domestic pricing adjustments. For motorists, the petrol reduction provides limited relief at fuel stations, while the diesel increase could add to operating costs for transporters and businesses. The government’s latest notification has therefore resulted in a mixed adjustment for consumers, with petrol becoming slightly cheaper and diesel becoming more expensive. The new Pakistan petrol price of Rs325.92 per litre and diesel price of Rs382.25 per litre will remain applicable from August 12, subject to any subsequent government revision under the petroleum pricing mechanism.

Lahore police have registered a case against the Station House Officer (SHO) of Sarwar Road Police Station and 10 other personnel following a raid at the residence of Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Awan. According to police, the officers had information about a house adjacent to the Attorney General’s residence. However, they allegedly entered the wrong property during the operation. The FIR states that the SHO and 11 police personnel were charged for allegedly exceeding their authority during the raid. The incident has also prompted further action against the officials involved. Awan’s driver, Irfan, claimed that the SHO and other police officers entered the house by jumping over the gate. He further alleged that the police took away the CCTV camera system during the raid. According to the driver, only domestic staff were present at the residence when the police arrived. The Attorney General reached home after finishing a meeting after being informed about the incident. Irfan also alleged that the police later returned the digital video recorder (DVR) after deleting CCTV footage from the system. The raid reportedly caused damage to property outside the residence, including flower pots placed near the entrance. Police officials said the raid was conducted based on information concerning the neighbouring house and that the officers mistakenly entered Awan’s residence. Meanwhile, the SHO of Sarwar Road Police Station has obtained interim bail from the court in connection with the case.
