MQM-P pushes for grand national dialogue on new pr…

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has announced plans to approach political parties across the country to launch a “grand national dialogue” on the creation of new provinces and administrative units.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, MQM-P Chairman Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said Pakistan needed a serious national discussion on restructuring its administrative system, arguing that the country’s growing population had increased the need for additional provinces.

Siddiqui said MQM-P had been advocating the creation of more provinces for decades, maintaining that Pakistan’s existing provincial structure was largely shaped by linguistic considerations rather than purely administrative requirements. He stressed that the party’s demand was not limited to Sindh and that it would support calls for new provinces wherever there was public and political backing.

The MQM-P leader urged political parties to sit together and discuss their proposals and reservations instead of treating the issue as a source of political confrontation. He said his party was prepared to take the lead in initiating such a dialogue.

Siddiqui also linked the debate over new provinces with the need to strengthen local governments. Referring to Article 140-A of the Constitution, he said provinces were constitutionally required to devolve political, administrative and financial powers to elected local representatives. He criticised the failure to fully implement the provision and recalled that MQM-P had previously approached the Supreme Court over the issue.

He argued that creating additional provinces was not unconstitutional and said Parliament could debate the appropriate mechanism for establishing them. He also questioned whether existing provinces should have the sole authority to decide on their own division.

MQM-P leader and Health Minister Mustafa Kamal said the party’s proposal was aimed at administrative restructuring rather than dividing communities or territories. He argued that people should have greater control over local leadership and governance, particularly when their cities face serious problems in living standards and public services.

The MQM-P campaign follows recent remarks by Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi, who called for political parties to address major national issues, including the creation of new provinces. His proposal has since generated debate among government figures, lawyers and political circles, giving fresh momentum to the long-running discussion over Pakistan’s provincial structure.

The MQM-P leadership said it would also engage legal experts and explore further legal avenues regarding the implementation of constitutional provisions related to local governance.

Government raises petrol price despite global decl…

The federal government has increased the price of petrol by Rs4.45 per litre, despite a reported decline in international petroleum prices, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Energy. The revised fuel prices will come into effect from August 6, 2026. The latest notification states that the new prices have been determined in line with the pricing mechanism recommended by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and approved by the federal government. Under the revised rates, the price of petrol has increased from Rs328.56 to Rs333.01 per litre, representing an increase of Rs4.45 per litre. The decision comes only a day after the government had announced lower fuel prices for August 5. In contrast, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been reduced by Rs2.00 per litre. Following the reduction, the retail price of diesel has declined from Rs385.86 to Rs383.86 per litre, providing limited relief to transport operators and commercial users who rely heavily on diesel. According to government sources, the increase in petrol prices is linked to adjustments in the petroleum levy. The government has reportedly increased the petroleum levy on high-speed diesel by Rs1.44 per litre, raising it from Rs70.86 to Rs72.30 per litre. Officials say such adjustments form part of the government’s broader fiscal strategy while maintaining the petroleum pricing framework. The announcement has drawn attention because global crude oil prices have softened in recent weeks, leading many consumers to expect a reduction in domestic fuel prices. However, local retail fuel prices are influenced by several factors in addition to international oil prices, including exchange rate fluctuations, taxes, petroleum levy, transportation costs, and other government-imposed charges. The revised fuel prices are expected to affect transportation expenses, logistics costs, and overall inflation, as petrol remains a key commodity for private motorists and commercial activities across Pakistan. The government had previously announced reduced prices for August 5, lowering petrol by Rs3.39 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs4.07 per litre. However, the latest notification revises those rates, resulting in a fresh increase in petrol prices while providing only a modest reduction in diesel prices. The new pricing structure will remain in effect until the government announces its next scheduled review of petroleum product prices.

Cockroach movement demands release of detained pro…

India’s youth led Cockroach protest movement called on authorities Monday to release all demonstrators detained during weeks of nationwide rallies, days after the campaign succeeded in forcing the resignation of the country’s education minister. The Cockroach Janta Party, an online organized group that has driven weeks of protests over exam paper leaks and other irregularities in India’s competitive examination system, said it had received reports of students being held in custody, particularly across the states of Assam, West Bengal and Bihar. In a statement, the group said any failure to release detained protesters or drop criminal cases against them would represent a breach of public trust, and warned it would take further action if its demand was not met. The statement followed the resignation two days earlier of Dharmendra Pradhan as education minister, a move that came after repeated failures in the administration of competitive exams fueled widespread anger among young Indians. The Cockroach Janta Party accused the government of going back on earlier assurances that protesters would not face punitive action. The movement has attracted millions of followers on social media since it launched in May under the leadership of Abhijeet Dipke, a 30 year old public relations graduate. Tens of thousands of demonstrators, most of them students, rallied last week in New Delhi and other cities across the country to demand Pradhan’s resignation and broader changes to the examination system. Protests in the capital turned violent on July 20 when demonstrators attempted to march from the Jantar Mantar protest site toward parliament. Police responded with tear gas and batons to break up the crowd, setting off clashes that led to a wave of detentions. The fallout from the crackdown carried into parliament on Monday, where opposition lawmakers repeatedly disrupted proceedings while demanding that the government address last week’s police response. Despite the disruptions, the government pressed ahead with introducing legislation in the lower house aimed at imposing tougher penalties for examination paper leaks. The protest movement has emerged as one of the most significant youth led political mobilizations in India in recent years, drawing comparisons to earlier waves of student activism that used social media to rapidly organize large scale demonstrations. Analysts say the swift resignation of a sitting cabinet minister underscores the growing influence such movements can wield when they combine online organizing with sustained street pressure, though the outcome of the current standoff over detained protesters remains uncertain as both sides continue to weigh their next steps.

Pakistan invites foreign investors as UK peer prai…

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has assured foreign investors of full government support, saying Pakistan is ready to facilitate investment and provide opportunities across different sectors. Naqvi made the remarks during a meeting with British House of Lords member Lord Zamir Choudrey in Islamabad on Saturday. The interior minister said Pakistan has significant investment potential and that the government wants to create an environment where foreign investors can operate with greater confidence. He assured investors that all possible facilities would be provided to support their business activities in the country. The discussion also covered regional peace and stability. Naqvi said Pakistan was continuing its efforts to promote lasting peace in the region. He expressed optimism that the country’s diplomatic and peace initiatives would produce positive results. Lord Zamir Choudrey appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to contribute to regional stability. He also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir for their efforts to promote peace. Choudrey said the government’s policies were helping create new opportunities for investment in Pakistan. The meeting comes as Islamabad seeks to strengthen economic ties with international partners while promoting Pakistan as an attractive destination for foreign investment. Pakistan has also been increasing cooperation with China on security and counterterrorism matters. Earlier this month, Naqvi met Chinese Minister of State for Public Security and Special Service Bureau chief Ling Zhifeng at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in internal security. Their discussions included border management, illegal immigration and efforts against drug trafficking. Meanwhile, security concerns surrounding Chinese nationals working in Pakistan remain a major issue. The CPEC Secretariat has decided to purchase a new bulletproof vehicle costing Rs95 million to strengthen security arrangements for Chinese citizens. The vehicle will reportedly be a 3,500cc Toyota Land Cruiser. It will be added to the existing fleet of security vehicles used for the protection of Chinese nationals. Government departments have also acquired or are seeking additional bulletproof vehicles and helicopters for security purposes. Officials have said Chinese citizens face significant security risks in Pakistan. As a result, they are generally restricted from travelling in ordinary, non-bulletproof vehicles. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal said the protection of Chinese nationals is a key responsibility of the Pakistani government. The purchase also highlights the security challenges linked to major China-Pakistan economic projects. The government is balancing efforts to attract more foreign investment with measures aimed at improving the security of international investors and workers.

Pakistan removed from Lloyd’s war risk insur…

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, has welcomed the decision by the Lloyd’s Market Association’s Joint War Committee to remove Pakistan from its list of regions classified as high-risk for war insurance. The announcement marks a significant development for the country’s maritime and trade sectors and is being viewed as a positive sign of increasing international confidence in Pakistan’s security and economic environment. Sharing his reaction on the social media platform X, Ishaq Dar described the decision as an important milestone that reflects the international community’s growing trust in Pakistan. He said the move demonstrates recognition of the country’s improving security situation and its continued efforts to strengthen economic stability and regional connectivity. The removal of Pakistan from the war risk insurance list is expected to provide several economic benefits. Ships entering Pakistani ports will no longer face the additional insurance premiums that are typically imposed on vessels operating in areas considered vulnerable to conflict or instability. As a result, shipping companies are likely to experience lower operational costs, making maritime trade with Pakistan more cost-effective and attractive. According to Ishaq Dar, reduced insurance expenses are expected to lower overall shipping costs, which will benefit both importers and exporters. Businesses engaged in international trade may see reduced transportation expenses, helping Pakistani products become more competitive in global markets while also decreasing the cost of imported goods. These developments could contribute to increased trade activity and support the country’s broader economic growth. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the decision is not only an economic achievement but also a reflection of Pakistan’s improving international image. He noted that the country’s efforts to maintain stability, enhance security, and build stronger relations with international partners have helped restore confidence among global institutions and businesses. Ishaq Dar also expressed appreciation to the Lloyd’s Market Association for its constructive engagement throughout the review process. He acknowledged the organization’s professional approach and thanked its Joint War Committee for carefully assessing the situation before making its decision. He said the outcome reflects a balanced evaluation based on changing ground realities and demonstrates confidence in Pakistan’s progress. Industry experts believe that the removal of Pakistan from the war risk list could encourage greater commercial shipping activity at the country’s ports, including Karachi, Port Qasim, and Gwadar. Lower insurance costs may also attract more international shipping lines and investors, strengthening Pakistan’s position as an important regional trade hub. The development is expected to complement the government’s ongoing efforts to improve trade, attract foreign investment, and boost economic recovery. Reduced logistics costs could benefit multiple sectors of the economy, including manufacturing, agriculture, and exports, while creating a more favorable environment for business and investment. Overall, the decision by the Lloyd’s Market Association’s Joint War Committee is being regarded as a major positive step for Pakistan. It not only reduces financial burdens on international shipping but also sends a strong message that the country’s security and business environment are gaining international recognition. Government officials hope this milestone will further enhance investor confidence, promote trade, and contribute to long-term economic development.
