Unforgiving July’s heatwaves in the U.S.

According to a landmark report released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States just experienced the single hottest month in modern history. Throughout July, atmospheric heat domes locked across vast stretches of the country. The heatwaves drove mean temperatures in the Lower 48 states to an unprecedented average of 76.9 degrees Fahrenheit (24.9 degrees Celsius). This mark sits an incredible 3.3 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century norm, effectively surpassing the legendary heatwaves of July 1936 during the Dust Bowl and July 2012.

The data underscores an extraordinary, nationwide thermal surge. Record-breaking conditions spared virtually no region, with all 48 contiguous states logging temperatures well above their long-term monthly averages. States in the Mountain West, the Southwest, the Northern Plains, and the Southeast bore the brunt of the extreme conditions. Across the country, over 600 monthly high-temperature records fell or were matched. 13 individual states logged a July that ranked among their top five hottest ever recorded. Wyoming stood out at the epicenter of the continental heat peak, registering its warmest month on record with temperatures soaring 5.1 degrees Fahrenheit higher than historical baselines.

While intense afternoon conditions pushed daytime maximum temperatures to an average of 89.5 degrees Fahrenheit, ranking as the sixth-warmest daytime average in 132 years of record-keeping. Meteorologists emphasize that nighttime behavior represented the most dangerous aspect of this climatic event. Overnights offered almost no thermal relief, as minimum temperatures averaged 64.2 degrees Fahrenheit across the nation. This smashed the previous overnight low-temperature record set in July 2022 by a staggering 0.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Climatologists point out that uncomfortably warm nights are one of the most definitive signatures of human-driven climate change. High concentrations of greenhouse gases trap outgoing longwave radiation close to the Earth’s surface long after sunset.

The physiological and infrastructural consequences of these elevated nighttime floors were felt severely across North America. When overnight temperatures fail to cool sufficiently, human bodies, livestock, and urban infrastructure lose their ability to recover from daytime heat stress. The sustained thermal stress strained municipal power grids, triggered localized water delivery alerts, and contributed to scores of heat-related illnesses and hospitalizations. In several western jurisdictions, compounding factors such as lingering droughts and severe heat domes fueled destructive wildfires, while critical water reservoirs like Lake Mead dipped toward critical levels.

Interestingly, temperature patterns across non-contiguous states diverged sharply from the mainland. Hawaii recorded near-average daytime conditions while Alaska experienced its coolest July since 2008, accompanied by record rainfall in regions around Anchorage. However, across the Lower 48, the pattern remained stubbornly hot and generally dry. As federal forecasters look ahead, climate projections suggest that the thermal pressure will persist, with above-average temperatures expected to hold firm across much of the central and southern United States well into late summer.

Police constable martyred, another wounded in Lakk…

A police constable was martyred and another sustained injuries after unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district on Sunday. The attack took place near the old police lines within the jurisdiction of Lakki City police station, where the officers were performing patrol duties as part of the City Rider Squad. Police officials said Constable Sajidullah received critical injuries during the firing. He later succumbed to his wounds. Constable Muhammad Waqas was also injured and was taken to a hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment. Following the incident, police teams immediately sealed off the area and launched a search operation to locate those responsible for the attack. Security personnel are also examining the crime scene and collecting evidence that could help investigators identify the attackers. Lakki Marwat District Police Officer Shehbaz Elahi visited the site and reviewed the situation with senior officers. He was briefed about the circumstances surrounding the attack and the steps taken by police following the incident. The DPO directed investigators to use modern forensic and investigative methods and mobilise all available resources to track down the suspects. He also ordered authorities to strengthen security arrangements to protect both law-enforcement personnel and civilians. Officials said attacks against police officers would not be tolerated and that every effort would be made to bring those behind the assault to justice. The latest incident comes amid a series of attacks against security personnel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The province has witnessed a rise in militant violence in recent weeks, prompting security forces and police to intensify operations against armed groups. Earlier this month, several police personnel were killed in a suicide attack outside a police station in Swat. In separate incidents in Hangu and Dera Ismail Khan, police officers were also targeted in attacks. The continuing violence has increased concerns over the security situation across parts of the province, particularly areas close to the former tribal districts and the Afghan border. Security officials have maintained that intensified intelligence-based operations are being conducted to prevent militant attacks and dismantle networks involved in violence against law-enforcement agencies.

Kaia Gerber speaks out on brother Presley’s addi…

Kaia Gerber is speaking publicly about her brother Presley Gerber’s long-running struggles for the first time, offering a rare glimpse into how addiction and mental-health challenges affected their family. In a new interview for Vogue’s September 2026 issue, the 24-year-old model and actress discussed the difficult experience of watching her older brother navigate serious personal challenges. Kaia also reflected on why her family’s decision to keep private matters away from the public eye did not always make it easier to deal with them. (Vogue) A family that valued privacy Kaia is the daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber. The family has generally maintained a private approach to personal matters, particularly when it comes to their children. However, Kaia explained that Presley’s struggles affected the entire family dynamic. She said she began trying to be the “easy” child, avoiding asking her parents for help because she did not want to add more pressure during an already difficult period. (Page Six) Her comments reveal how one family member’s difficulties can influence everyone around them, even when those issues are kept away from the public spotlight. Presley’s openness changed the conversation Kaia also expressed admiration for Presley’s decision to speak more openly about his experiences. Rather than viewing his willingness to discuss his struggles as something embarrassing, she described it as an important example of vulnerability. Presley has previously spoken publicly about his mental-health and substance-use struggles. His openness has allowed the family to approach the subject differently and has helped Kaia recognize the importance of being honest about difficult experiences. (People.com) For Kaia, hiding painful experiences was not necessarily the best way to protect the family. Instead, Presley’s willingness to talk about what he had gone through showed her that vulnerability can help people feel less isolated. A new perspective on family support Kaia’s comments do not simply revisit her brother’s past. They also show how her own understanding of family support has changed. Growing up in a famous family meant that privacy was especially important, but Kaia now appears to recognize that silence can sometimes prevent people from asking for the support they need. Her candid discussion comes as she promotes The Shards, Ryan Murphy’s new FX adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, in which she stars alongside Homer Gere. The Vogue feature also explores her career, famous family and experiences growing up under intense public attention. (Vogue) By speaking about her family with greater openness, Kaia is offering a more personal perspective on fame, privacy and the importance of allowing people to be vulnerable when they need support.
