Pakistan, google sign “historic” MOU

Islamabad: Pakistan and Google have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital skills, IT exports and innovation, with Pakistani students set to receive free one year access to advanced AI tools including Gemini.

The agreement was signed on Friday during a reception hosted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in honour of the Google team, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Under the agreement, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) centre of excellence will be established in Islamabad for the training of young people and professionals to align their skills with global market requirements.

This news comes days after Google opened its first office in Pakistan, which signals the company’s interest in Pakistan’s technology sector.

Pakistani students will also receive one year of free google AI tools access, including gemini and google AI plus. 

Both sides have agreed to expand google certificate to 150,000 in 2026, helping Pakistani youth with market oriented skills. 

A joint taskforce will also be established to increase the country’s IT exports and improve the country’s competitiveness in the global technology sector. 

The agreement also covers efforts to improve the global competitiveness of Pakistan’s mobile application and gaming industries, while promoting digital payments and expanding digital commerce.

One of the areas identified for cooperation is the Federal Board of Revenue’s digitization program, where AI powered data analytics could be used to improve tax administration and public-sector efficiency.

In agriculture, Pakistan and Google will explore AI applications for crop monitoring, forecasting and sustainable farming practices. The agreement also aims to use digital platforms to help Pakistani small and medium sized enterprises access international markets and expand their exports.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif described the collaboration as a stepping stone toward contributing to a field that is “very attractive” and “the call of the day.” 

Mr Sharif noted that the delegation’s arrival was “a sheer coincidence” because it comes precisely as the country is undergoing a major digital transformation of governance under the government’s “Digital Nation Pakistan” initiative. 

Wilson L. White (Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy) described the $30 Billion Export Target by stating “Your ambition of making Pakistan a 30-billion-dollar IT export hub aligns with the goals that we have at Google.”

    Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has rejected the results of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections, alleging widespread electoral irregularities and demanding fresh polling in the constituency contested by senior PPP leader Chaudhry Yasin. Addressing a workers’ convention in Muzaffarabad on Wednesday, Bilawal said his party would not accept what it  described as a manipulated election outcome. He claimed there was substantial evidence of irregularities in several polling stations and called on the election authorities to order an immediate re-poll in the disputed constituency. Bilawal alleged that around 30 polling stations in Chaudhry Yasin’s constituency were unlawfully occupied during the voting process. According to him, videos circulating on social media and obtained by the party show individuals allegedly stamping ballot papers illegally and interfering with the electoral process. He further claimed that these polling stations recorded an unusually high voter turnout of approximately 90 percent, raising questions about the credibility of the results. The PPP chairman argued that the reported turnout, combined with the alleged video evidence, justified a fresh vote to ensure transparency and public confidence in the electoral process. Criticizing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Bilawal accused the party of benefiting from electoral manipulation. He also made sharp political remarks against the ruling party, alleging that it had a long history of relying on rigged elections. His comments have further intensified the political dispute surrounding the AJK election results. The PPP leadership has urged the relevant election authorities to investigate the alleged irregularities and review the evidence presented by the party. Bilawal maintained that a transparent inquiry and re-polling in the affected constituency are essential to protect the integrity of the democratic process. The PML-N has not issued a detailed response to Bilawal’s latest allegations at the time of writing. Election authorities have also not announced any decision regarding the demand for re-polling. The dispute has added to the political tension following the Azad Kashmir elections, with rival parties exchanging accusations over the fairness of the electoral process. The coming days are expected to be crucial as the Election Commission reviews complaints submitted by political parties and determines whether any further action is warranted. If approved, re-polling in the disputed constituency could have implications for the final political landscape in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

    Lahore: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has strongly responded to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s criticism of Pakistan’s governance system, arguing that he should not condemn the same structure that helped him rise to a senior position. In her reaction, Bukhari said Naqvi had advanced through the existing system and was now calling it a failure despite being one of its beneficiaries. She also claimed that the responsibilities entrusted to him had produced disappointing results, adding that the country’s leadership would decide how to address the matter if it was being raised seriously. Her remarks came after Naqvi, speaking at the Pakistan Economic Summit in Islamabad, described the current governance system as ineffective and incapable of solving the country’s long-standing challenges. Most particularly, Balochi weddings have their own beautiful traditions but many modern trends influenced by social media and other cultures are gradually replacing them. It is good to enjoy modern trends, but we should not forget our own traditions that identifies us in the world. The below I mention some of the keen factors affecting the culture: Our Culture Is Our Identity Baloch wedding traditions have been passed down by our ancestors. They tell the story of who we are and remind us of our rich cultural heritage. Culture is what identify us from any part of the world and make us look different from the native of that particular area. Traditional Balochi Dress Balochi brides and grooms wear beautiful traditional dresses with fine embroidery done by Baloch women’s hand. They are hand-made cloths. Nowadays, many people prefer modern designer clothes instead of traditional Balochi attire. The trend has been influenced from social media and is adopted by the living persons in their daily life. Wedding Customs Many families now arrange Mehndi ceremonies, Dholki events, dance performances, bridal shows, and other celebrations that were not traditionally part of Baloch weddings. As a result, our original customs are becoming less common. As a result, few young people know the traditional practices of Balochi Culture. Decoration Traditional Baloch weddings had simple decorations that focused on family, culture, and tradition. Today, expensive stage decorations, flower walls, and modern themes are becoming very popular, making the marriage more expensive. Upon seeing such things, everyone around the society expects such marriages to take place in future, badly affecting the poor people who cannot afford them and thus ends up insulting them in others’ eyes. Social Media Influence Many people copy what they see on social media without thinking about their own culture. It is good to know about other’s culture, but killing your own culture for others is never beneficial for the generation to come. Our culture should be preserved. Music and Celebration Traditional Balochi music and cultural celebrations should be encouraged because they keep our heritage alive. Sadly, very few people are well aware of Balochi singers. We respect other singers when it comes to our own Balochi singers who are preserving the language are never valued or recognized by majority of us. Thus, modern trends are not bad, but we should not allow them to replace our beautiful traditions. Baloch wedding traditions are an important part of our culture. Our dresses, music, customs, and celebrations reflect our identity, and we should respect and preserve them. This will help future generations understand the value of Balochi culture. Let us take pride in being Baloch, promote our traditions and show the world the beauty of our culture.

    Islamabad: A women’s inter university baseball championship has become a major controversy after the Higher Education Commission (HEC) banned two Lahore based universities, their players and officials for one year over alleged violence and misconduct. However, affected students and some stakeholders are demanding a separate investigation, claiming that the complete facts of the incident have not been made public. According to an HEC order issued on July 21, 2026, the University of the Punjab, Lahore and Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) have been suspended from participating in HEC/Pakistan University Sports Board (PUSB) women’s baseball activities for one year. According to documents, HEC stated that the action was taken after “serious incidents of violence, physical altercation, indiscipline and misconduct” during and after the final match and closing ceremony of the HEC Intervarsity Women’s Baseball Championship 2025–26 held at the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), Islamabad. The order also imposed a one year ban on team managers, coaches and accompanying officials, while players from both teams were barred from participating in HEC/PUSB sports events during the suspension period. However, the decision has triggered criticism from some students and supporters, who are demanding an independent inquiry before any punishment is considered final. They questioned whether all sides were properly heard and whether complete evidence was reviewed before imposing the ban. Students and representatives claimed that several issues surrounding the event require investigation, including security arrangements, availability of CCTV footage, alleged loss of personal belongings, and arrangements for students’ transport after the closing ceremony. They alleged that students faced difficulties after the event ended, claiming that transport arrangements were delayed and some students had to wait late at night for vehicles. They also questioned why CCTV footage and other evidence were not made publicly available to clarify what exactly happened. The students demanded that an independent investigation committee should be formed, all available evidence should be examined, and a detailed report should be presented publicly so that responsibility can be fixed fairly. The controversy also raised questions about event management. Some stakeholders questioned the selection of the host arrangements and demanded clarity about the responsibilities assigned during the championship. Meanwhile, HEC has maintained that disciplinary action was taken under Article 2.11.12 of the Pakistan University Sports Board Constitution and Rules, which allows action against teams, players or officials involved in violence during or after inter university championships. The HEC order said the decision was approved by the competent authority and would be circulated to all public and private sector higher education institutions for implementation. The matter has now become a test for sports governance in universities, with one side demanding strict action against indiscipline while the other demanding transparency and a fair investigation before deciding the future of students involved. HEC’s version was also sought regarding the matter. The HEC media team was contacted for its official response and comments on the allegations raised by students and stakeholders. However, at the time of filing this report, no response, clarification, or additional version had been received from HEC. The story will be updated if HEC provides further information or its official position on the issue.

    Heavy rain and strong winds caused widespread destruction across Punjab over the past 24 hours, leaving at least eight people dead and 37 others injured in a series of weather-related incidents, according to the Emergency Services Department. Rescue Punjab said most of the casualties occurred after roofs, walls, and sheds collapsed due to intense rainfall and powerful windstorms. Emergency teams responded to dozens of incidents across the province and carried out rescue and relief operations. Gujranwala was among the worst-affected districts. Rescue officials reported eight separate incidents of roof and wall collapses. Three people lost their lives, while 14 others suffered injuries. Rescue teams shifted the injured to nearby hospitals and cleared debris from the affected areas. In Kamoke, a tragic incident claimed the life of a child who drowned after falling into rainwater accumulated in an underpass. Authorities urged parents to keep children away from flooded roads and underpasses during heavy rainfall. In Pakpattan, two people were killed and two others injured when the mud roof of a house collapsed following continuous rain. Rescue workers reached the site and recovered the victims from the rubble before shifting the injured for medical treatment. In Sahiwal, a woman died after the roof of a house collapsed in Kot Khadim Ali Shah. In another incident in Harappa, three people were injured when the roof of a shop caved in during the storm. Lahore also witnessed damage as a roof collapsed near Gulshan-e-Ravi on Band Road, injuring four people. Rescue teams provided first aid and transported the injured to hospital. In Mandi Bahauddin, several villages reported roof and wall collapses. Eight people sustained injuries in separate incidents caused by the severe weather. In Bahawalnagar, one person was injured after a shed collapsed near Al-Jannat Chowk on Khan Baba Road. Three more people were injured in Sialkot when the roof of a structure gave way during the rainfall. Rescue officials also reported partial landslides and incidents of fallen trees in the hilly areas of Murree and Kahuta. Emergency teams remained on alert to clear roads and respond to any further emergencies.

    Government allows cheaper export of costly importe…

    The federal Ministry of Industries and Production has allowed the export of imported sugar at a lower price, a decision that could cause billions of rupees in losses to the national exchequer, according to ministry sources. Sources said the government has permitted the export of 100,000 tonnes of sugar. However, a decision on exporting 250,000 tonnes of cheaper locally produced sugar has not yet been taken. The sources described the decision to allow the export of only 100,000 tonnes as disappointing. They said the move could create financial losses because the sugar being exported was imported at a comparatively higher cost. The sources further warned that the decision could also affect sugarcane procurement in the country. According to them, sugar mills may face difficulties in purchasing sugarcane from farmers if the current situation persists. Sugar mill owners had already informed the Ministry of Industries and Production about the issue, sources said. They had reportedly warned the ministry that the limited export decision could make it difficult for mills to manage their stocks and purchase the upcoming sugarcane crop from farmers. The government is now facing a challenge in balancing sugar exports, domestic prices, the interests of farmers and the financial impact on the national exchequer. Sources said further decisions regarding the export of locally produced sugar are expected after reviewing the market situation and available stocks.
