  • 106 Shark tattoos win woman guinness World record

    An American woman has earned a Guinness World Record after covering her body with 106 shark tattoos turning her lifelong passion for sharks into a record breaking achievement. Emily Morrison from the U.S. state of Maine, received the Guinness World Records title in May for having the most shark tattoos on a woman’s body. Emily is a shark biologist and also owns a company that offers shark fossil diving tours. Known as “Shark Lady Emily,” she said her love for sharks began when she was just eight years old. After watching the movie Jaws she became afraid of sharks.  Her father encouraged her to learn about real sharks by reading books from the library and her fear soon turned into fascination. Over the years Emily has had many close encounters with sharks.  She has fed tiger sharks and great hammerhead sharks in the Bahamas gone cage diving with great white sharks in Australia and swum with whale sharks off the coast of Mexico. Emily is also set to appear in a special program called “My Strange Shark Addiction” during Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week where she will share her unique journey and passion for sharks.

  • Brain molecule may improve sleep

    Millions of people around the world struggle with insomnia and other sleep problems. Now scientists in China have identified a natural brain molecule that may help explain how the body knows when it is time to sleep. The discovery could lead to safer and more effective sleep medicines in the future. The study published in Nature Neuroscience found that a natural molecule called tryptamine (TrpA) plays an important role in increasing the body’s need for sleep. Researchers say this molecule sends signals to the brain that it is time to rest. Experts explained that good sleep is essential for overall health. During sleep the brain organizes memories stores information and removes waste that builds up during the day. However many people do not get enough sleep because of insomnia stress depression anxiety or problems with the body’s internal clock also known as the circadian rhythm. To better understand the process researchers studied mice which are active at night and pigs which are active during the day. Using a special fluorescent sensor they measured the amount of tryptamine in the animals’ cerebrospinal fluid at different times. The scientists found that the longer the animals stayed awake the higher their tryptamine levels became. This suggests that the molecule reflects the body’s natural “sleep pressure” the growing need for sleep after spending many hours awake. The team also discovered that active nerve cells release tryptamine while the body is awake. The molecule then attaches to a receptor called GPR139 which activates sleep promoting nerve cells in an area of the brain known as the hypothalamic preoptic area. In the next stage of the study researchers tested experimental compounds that activated the GPR139 receptor. The results showed that the animals slept longer and experienced better quality sleep. Scientists say finding the same results in both mice and pigs suggests that this biological system may also exist in humans. If future studies confirm this the discovery could help develop new treatments for insomnia and other sleep disorders that are safer more effective and have fewer side effects than many current sleep medications.

In fact once they finally notice it they often wonder how they missed something so obvious. Most people immediately focus on the numbers in the image expecting to find a mistake there. Because of this they overlook the real error. If you could not find it within 10 seconds don’t worry. The mistake is not in the numbers. The hidden error is actually in the text beside them. The word “mistake” is spelled incorrectly. This happens because the brain naturally pays attention to the numbers first and assumes the text is correct. Only after checking the numbers does it begin to notice the writing. This simple puzzle shows how our brains can miss obvious details when our attention is focused somewhere else.

  • Kimchi may help remove microplastics

    Scientists are studying whether kimchi a popular Korean fermented food could help the body remove harmful microplastics. Early research suggests that certain beneficial bacteria found in kimchi may attach to tiny plastic particles during digestion making it easier for the body to remove them through waste. Microplastics are extremely small pieces of plastic that have already been found in human blood lungs and even the placenta. People can take them in through food drinking water and the air they breathe raising concerns about their possible health effects. In the study researchers examined a type of lactic acid bacteria taken from kimchi. They tested it in mice and found that animals given the probiotic passed nearly twice as many microplastic particles in their waste compared with those that did not receive it. Laboratory tests also showed that the bacteria attached to about 57% of the microplastic particles suggesting it may help remove them from the body. However researchers stressed that these findings are still preliminary.  The study does not prove that eating regular kimchi will have the same effect in humans. More clinical studies are needed before scientists can confirm whether kimchi or its beneficial bacteria can help reduce microplastics in the human body.

  • Humans may live up to 194 Years

    How long can a human live? No one knows the exact answer but scientists believe there is a natural limit to the human lifespan. According to a study a person could possibly live as long as 194 years although reaching that age would be extremely rare. Researchers say living forever is not possible. Even if science discovers new ways to slow aging the body cannot avoid the natural damage that builds up over time. The study published in the journal Nature looked at how our DNA and genes change throughout life. Scientists found that many genetic changes are harmless but some damage cells and reduce how well they work. Over time this damage increases the risk of age related diseases. The researchers explained that these genetic changes cannot be completely prevented.  They happen naturally when cells divide and can also be caused by viruses certain chemicals and ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight. To estimate the maximum human lifespan the team created a scientific model that included reversible signs of aging while keeping permanent genetic changes in place. The results suggested that even if future technology slows the aging process the longest a human could live would likely be between 146 and 194 years. Scientists also noted that some organs such as the skin and liver regularly replace old cells helping repair some damage. However the heart and brain do not replace most of their cells making genetic damage in these organs much harder to reverse. The researchers stressed that genetic changes are not always harmful but as they build up over time they may gradually shorten a person’s lifespan. They also believe that other biological processes may affect aging and more research is needed to better understand them. At present the longest confirmed human lifespan belongs to Jeanne Calment of France who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years making her the oldest verified person in recorded history.

Honey contains small amounts of tryptophan and its natural sugars may help the body use this amino acid more effectively. • Jalebi Some people believe that eating jalebi before bed can make you sleepy because it raises blood sugar and insulin levels. However there is limited scientific evidence to support this and eating sugary foods at night is generally not recommended as a regular sleep aid. • Cherries Cherries especially tart cherries are a natural source of melatonin. Research suggests that drinking cherry juice may improve sleep quality and help some people sleep longer. • Almonds Almonds are rich in magnesium a mineral that supports healthy sleep and muscle relaxation. Studies suggest that low magnesium levels may contribute to sleep problems. While these foods may support better sleep they are not a cure for chronic insomnia. If you have ongoing sleep problems it is best to speak with a healthcare professional to find the underlying cause.

  • Water during meals may increase food intake

    A new study suggests that drinking water again and again while eating may not help with weight loss. Instead it could actually make people eat more food. Many people believe that taking sips of water during a meal helps them feel full faster leading them to eat less. However the new research challenges that common belief. Researchers at Cornell University found that for every extra 100 milliliters of water people drank during a meal they ate about 40 grams more food on average. This equals roughly 50 extra calories. The study also found that people who frequently switched between eating and drinking water consumed more food overall than those who did not. Earlier studies have also shown that people with obesity are more likely to drink water for longer periods during meals drink it more quickly and take frequent sips throughout the meal. Researchers say these findings suggest that the relationship between drinking water during meals and the amount of food people eat may be different from what was previously believed. However they stress that more research is needed before any firm conclusions can be made.

    A new scientific study has highlighted that body fat is much more than a source of extra weight. Researchers say fat tissue functions as an essential organ that helps regulate metabolism, stores energy, and produces hormones needed for the body’s normal functioning. According to the researchers, while excessive body fat is widely associated with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, having too little body fat can also pose serious health risks. The findings suggest that maintaining a healthy balance of body fat is important for overall metabolic health. The study focused on a rare inherited disorder known as Familial Partial Lipodystrophy Type 2 (FPLD2). People with this condition lose fat from specific parts of the body or experience abnormal fat distribution, increasing their risk of diabetes and other metabolic disorders. A research team led by American endocrinologist Dr. Elif Oral examined patients with the condition and found that affected fat cells develop significant structural and functional abnormalities. These changes can disrupt the body’s metabolism and contribute to a range of health complications. To better understand the disease, scientists created a mouse model in which the Lamin A/C gene was switched off only in fat cells. This is the same gene known to be affected in individuals with FPLD2. The model allowed researchers to closely examine how defects in fat tissue influence the body’s metabolic processes. Researchers believe the findings could improve understanding of rare fat disorders while also opening new avenues for the development of treatments for diabetes and other metabolic diseases. The study reinforces the idea that healthy fat tissue plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s balance and overall well-being.

    By Syed Hashim Abbas Bukhari  In the age-old debate about the pros and perils of Artificial Intelligence (AI), one of the main stances of the Luddites is the absence of emotions in AI thus making it ill equipped to handle situations requiring empathy and emotional intelligence. However, one could argue that this point of distinction between humans and AI is rapidly vanishing as we witness our younger generation increasingly suffering from the phenomenon of emotional desensitization. Let us take a walk through the realms of social media. When our country was fighting a war, the younger generation was engaged in its own meme war on social media, seemingly unaware of the seriousness and gravity of the situation. Whether the world was on the brink of World War 3, facing a new global pandemic or staring down the barrel of rocketing oil prices, the reaction of the younger generation showed alarming levels of emotional desensitization. Instead of intellectual debates, protests, or striving to find a solution, the younger generation indulges in creating memes designed to generate nothing more than likes, shares, and comments. According to researchers, emotional desensitization is a form of emotional numbing or habituation where a situation that triggered a strong feeling no longer affects you as intensely. This is becoming a rising area of concern for our elders who equate our response to these dire and serious situations as a lack of maturity and emotional sensitivity on our part. The argument presented over here is that owing to our access to endless streams of information our generation should be more emotionally evolved as compared to our predecessors. The reality, however, seems contrary to this belief, as our exposure to warfare, natural disasters, and other calamities increases, our levels of emotional sensitivity has seemingly taken a nosedive. The question that should be raised is whether we should be classified as emotionally desensitized or is it our generation just whistling past the graveyard. It is a basic human psychology that when we experience grief or trauma, which is too much to process, we use various coping mechanisms. For some of us it may be anger, humor, violence or isolation but we all have coping mechanisms enabling us to survive various emotionally charged experiences. A study of social behaviors reveals that with the passage of time we have changed our coping mechanisms. In the past humans used to display their emotional trauma or suffering through anger and sought comfort through social gatherings. In the case of our generation, social media has taken the place of social gatherings, and anger has been replaced with humor. Thus, the endless stream of memes, reels, and shorts on every emotionally charged event.  Our stance on mental health, gender equality, racism, climate change, and countless other previously ignored or snubbed issues prove us to be a more emotionally sensitive and mature generation. We are the generation that believe that actions speak louder than words. We may seem to be whistling past the various graveyards or making light of serious situations but we are the generation that is breaking down the glass ceiling, bringing down the walls of inequality, and trying to build a society that embodies the morals and values of justice, kindness, and integrity for all. With each new generation the prioritization of emotionally sensitive areas may change, the coping mechanisms may be adapted according to the changing environment, or ways to display emotions may evolve but the thing to understand is that we haven’t become emotionally disengaged or desensitized, we are only embracing our emotions in our own distinct way. As Hazrat Ali (AS) said: “Do not force your children to behave like you, for surely they have been created for a time which is different to your time.”

Opening a bank account, purchase of property, willingness to travel have all been monitored by male family members for most women. Receiving money for daily or necessary use means being dependent on another member of the house. The era has gradually changed with the growth in Pakistan’s fintech ecosystem. After the availability of digital payments methods, mobile wallets and ease of not having to visit banks with cashless banking, some things are rapidly changing. This has opened up new opportunities for a number of women across the country in the formal digitally optimized economy. Barriers for women remain but the user friendly mobile wallets are gradually improving how women receive or save money. Fintech ecosystem in Pakistan is not just technology but it is about financial inclusion. According to the Karandaaz Financial Inclusion Survey (K-FIS) 2024, 14% of Pakistani women have access to a regulated financial account compared with 56% of men while just 11% of women own a mobile wallet compared to 48% of men. This highlights a clear gender gap in Pakistan’s fintech ecosystem which could be due to lack of basic financial education, access to digital resources or cultural norms. Fintech is now paving path to address traditional challenges for women including access to digital financial tools, mobility, maintaining credit history or wanting to be financially independent by lending or saving money. Where conventional banks require customers to visit branches for account opening, mobile wallets give easy access to create accounts through their phones. All facilities like paying utility bills, receiving salaries or making vendor payments is now easier than ever. Many women in Pakistan has an entrepreneurial spirit and are running their microbusinesses across multiple villages, small towns and communities. Some sell clothing, handicrafts or even baked goods on a regular basis to make ends meet but lack financial education to invest and multiply their money for growth and expansion. However, fintech facilitates women with receiving money in digital wallets instead of cash or male members’ bank accounts. International research also suggests that women who adopt mobile money services are significantly more likely to access formal financial systems particularly when combined with education and mobile phone ownership. Fintech is not limited to ease in digital payments. Fintech ecosystem increases transparency, reduces risks of carrying cash or theft, helps understand formal methods of saving and investing money. For women receiving salaries or government support do not rely on another person to receive their deserved money but has access to receive and manage their money on their own. According to the World Bank’s latest Global Findex research, receiving wages or government payments digitally is often the first reason many women open a financial account. Pakistan is gradually moving towards financial inclusion but understanding technology is not the only barrier. Many hindrances lie outside of technology starting with the limited use or access to smart phones, approximately 82% of Pakistani men own a mobile phone while only 46% of women do creating a significant divide. Digital literacy is another challenge that comes with lack of education on the safe use of mobile wallets around scams and frauds. Pakistan has gradually progressed in financial ecosystem and has been supported by policy makers with regulations to accelerate financial inclusion. Pakistan and private fintech sector has taken initiatives encouraging digital payments, delivering financial education, introducing cashless services while encouraging mobile wallets. However, better initiatives are needed around financial education on mobile wallets, designing products around women needs and ease which includes formal educational trainings, low-cost saving products or multilingual apps to cover provincial and regionally spoken and understood languages. Building trust, empowering women and developing a digital ecosystem are all equally important for the financial inclusion in Pakistan.
