The Biggest Mistakes I Made
I underestimated wood movement
Fence pickets are not furniture-grade lumber. A few boards had more moisture than I realized, and after installation, I noticed slight twisting.
It wasn’t a full failure, but it reminded me that beginner woodworking outdoors has a steep learning curve when weather gets involved.
I rushed part of the finish
I got impatient and installed a couple pieces before the stain had fully cured. Bad idea.
That created uneven color in spots, and I had to touch it up later. It wasn’t the end of the world, but wow, was it annoying.
Some design choices looked better than they functioned
I made the lower section a little too tight to the ground at first. That reduced airflow and made cleanup harder after heavy rain.
That’s the stuff no one glamorizes in a Pinterest-style outdoor DIY project. Pretty matters, but drainage and maintenance matter more.
My biggest lesson
Cheap materials can still create a beautiful result, but they punish rushed decisions. If I had slowed down one more day, I probably would’ve saved myself three little repairs.
