The Unspoken Challenges of Running an Online Business
When it comes to running an online business, many people assume that the toughest part is driving traffic, making sales, or navigating the technical aspects. However, after over 8 years of blogging, I’ve come to realize that the true challenge lies elsewhere.
The real struggle is the mental weight of building something from scratch, without a clear roadmap or formal structure. Unlike traditional careers, online entrepreneurship requires figuring things out as you go, which can be a heavy burden to bear.
The Isolation and Uncertainty
The lack of a clear plan or guarantee of success can be daunting, especially when faced with unexpected setbacks like Google updates that decimate traffic. Many bloggers have been forced to abandon their online ventures and return to traditional work, due to the risks and uncertainties involved.
Moreover, the online business world can be surprisingly isolating. As a blogger, I often find myself working alone, with no colleagues or peers to turn to for support. The feeling of being an ‘expert’ can also make it difficult to ask for help, leading to a sense of carrying the weight of responsibilities quietly.
The Comparison Trap
The online world can be a breeding ground for comparison and self-doubt. It’s easy to get caught up in comparing ourselves to others who seem more successful, smarter, or more organized. The constant exposure to other people’s highlight reels can be overwhelming, making it hard not to feel like we’re not measuring up.
I’ve even given a name to the little voice in my head that perpetuates these negative thoughts – Brenda. She loves to remind me that others are more successful, organized, and tech-savvy, making it hard not to feel inadequate.
Overcoming the Stigma
Another challenge online businesses face is the stigma surrounding their legitimacy. While physical products are widely accepted and supported, digital products and social media-based businesses are often viewed with skepticism. It’s not uncommon for people to ask for free access to online products or services, while readily paying for physical ones.
Despite these challenges, it’s essential to acknowledge the mental weight of running an online business and to find ways to overcome it. By recognizing the isolation, uncertainty, and comparison traps, we can begin to build a more supportive and understanding community for online entrepreneurs.
Breaking Free from the Mental Weight
So, how can we break free from the mental weight of running an online business? Here are a few strategies that have helped me:
- Connect with other online entrepreneurs to build a support network
- Focus on your own journey and accomplishments, rather than comparing yourself to others
- Develop a growth mindset and be open to learning and improvement
- Prioritize self-care and take breaks to avoid burnout
