Running a Business with a Baby: A New Approach
When I became a mother, I thought the biggest challenge of running my business would be managing my time. However, I soon discovered that the real obstacle was maintaining my mental bandwidth and energy levels.
In the past, I could work for hours on end, brainstorming content, planning projects, and experimenting with new ideas. But now, my work is confined to small pockets of time, such as during my daughter’s preschool hours, naptime, or while she plays beside me.
A Shift in Perspective
This new reality forced me to reevaluate my approach to work. I realized that if my business relied on long workdays or constant motivation, it wouldn’t be sustainable. So, I decided to redesign my workflow, focusing on systems rather than hustle.
Initially, I was concerned that implementing systems would stifle my creativity and make me feel trapped. But I’ve found that having a structured approach has actually helped me preserve my energy and creative juices.
Systems for Success
To maintain my business, I’ve implemented the following systems:
- One priority per week: I focus on a single task each week, such as writing newsletters, creating Pinterest pins, or building a mini course. If I complete one meaningful task, I consider the week a success.
- Batching similar work: I group similar tasks together, such as writing multiple Pinterest descriptions or drafting several newsletters at once. This approach reduces decision-making and allows me to execute tasks more efficiently.
By adopting these systems, I’ve been able to maintain my business despite the challenges of being a mother. I’ve learned to prioritize progress over volume and focus on making meaningful contributions rather than trying to do everything at once.
