How to Build a Hydrangea Bouquet Without Using Floral Foam

The Supplies You Actually Need

Basic Tools

Grab clean snips, a sharp knife, a bucket, and a towel. That’s the core setup for solid DIY flower arrangement work.

I also like to keep clear floral tape nearby. It’s cheap, easy, and honestly one of the best beginner tools.

Best Vessel Choices

For hydrangeas, use a sturdy wide-mouth vase, ceramic vessel, or heavy glass container. These blooms are top-heavy, so a tiny lightweight vase is basically asking for chaos.

A ceramic vase arrangement feels more stable and hides mechanics nicely. A mason jar bouquet can work too, but only for a smaller bunch.

Reusable Mechanics

My favorite options are chicken wire mechanics, a taped grid vase, and a pin frog or flower frog. These all help with stem support mechanics without trapping stems in foam.

Chicken wire is great for full arrangements. A frog is awesome when you want precision in a low bowl.

Optional Extras

You can also use branches, curly willow, or sturdy foliage for a natural armature. Those little touches help create a more organic, green floral design look.

In the next section, I’ll show you how to prep hydrangeas so they don’t do that dramatic fainting act on your counter.
