I joined a run club last spring, mostly because my friend Dana would not stop talking about it. And I will not lie to you, I signed up for the coffee afterward more than the actual running.
But something funny happened. I started caring about what I wore – just in a “I feel good in this and I want to keep moving” way. There is real power in an outfit that works for the run AND for standing around the cafe afterward looking like a person who has their life together.
Here are the ones I keep coming back to, whether you are actually running or just embracing the whole athletic-adjacent vibe on a Saturday.
My Favorite Athletic Looks for the Track and the Coffee Line After
Running Shorts With Fitted Tee And Sneakers
This is the classic. The one you reach for without thinking. Running shorts, a fitted tee that actually stays put, and sneakers that do their job.
Biker Shorts With Oversized Run Club Sweatshirt
So this is the look that made me feel like I belonged before I could even run a full mile. Biker shorts, and then a big soft sweatshirt over the top, ideally one with your club’s name on it if you have one.
The contrast is the point. Tight on the bottom, roomy on top. It reads intentional even on the days when you rolled out of bed four minutes ago.
Black Leggings With Running Jacket And Cap
When the morning has a chill to it, this is what I grab. A lightweight running jacket, a cap pulled low, and good black leggings underneath.
The cap does more work than you would think. It keeps the sun out of your eyes, hides the fact that you did not wash your hair, and adds a little polish. Some of the best outfits with black leggings are the ones where you just layer something slightly sporty on top and call it done.
Tennis Skirt With Quarter-Zip And Running Shoes
A tennis skirt is not just for tennis. It is one of those pieces that looks cute and moves with you, which is really all I ask for.
Pair it with a quarter-zip in a soft neutral and your running shoes and you have something that works for a light jog or a walk with a friend who talks too much to actually run (that is Dana, love her). The pleats swing when you move and it just makes you happy.
White Air Force 1s With Baggy Jeans And Crop Top
Okay, now we are drifting into the “after the run” territory, and I am here for it. White Air Force 1s with baggy jeans and a little crop top is the uniform of every person who looks impossibly cool at the coffee counter.
The jeans should be roomy, almost slouchy. That contrast against the chunky white sneaker is what makes the look. When people talk about air force 1 outfits women reach for again and again, this is usually the one.
Air Force 1s With Black Leggings And Hoodie
This is my errand-day armor. Leggings, an oversized hoodie, and my white sneakers.
It is comfortable in a way that feels almost like cheating. And the sneaker keeps it from looking like pajamas, which, let us be honest, was the alternative I considered.
White Air Force 1s With Cargo Pants And Tank Top
Cargo pants have come roaring back and I am not mad about it. The pockets alone. Pair them with a simple tank top and your white AF1s and you have a look that is casual but has a little edge to it.
My sister wore this to pick me up from run club one Saturday and three separate people asked where her pants were from. She loved every second of the attention.
Air Force 1s With Denim Shorts And Oversized Tee
Summer version. Denim shorts, a big soft tee that you can knot at the side if you want, and the sneakers.
This is the one I throw on when it is warm and I cannot be bothered to think, and somehow it always looks pulled together anyway.
Jordans With Baggy Jeans And Baby Tee
Jordans bring a different energy. A little more attitude, a little more color. With baggy jeans and a fitted baby tee, they become the star of the outfit and everything else just supports them.
I love the color-blocked pairs for this. When I think about jordan outfits for women that actually look effortless in person, it is almost always this combination of a bold shoe against a relaxed jean.
Jordans With Cargo Pants And Cropped Hoodie
More cargo pants, because clearly I have a thing. This time with Jordans and a cropped hoodie, so you get that little sliver of showing at the waist.
The whole outfit feels streetwear-adjacent without trying too hard. And a cropped hoodie is surprisingly practical because it does not bunch up under a bag strap.
Jordans With Biker Shorts And Oversized T-Shirt
Biker shorts and a big t-shirt is a formula that never lets me down, and swapping in Jordans instead of a plain sneaker instantly makes it feel more considered.
Long tee, short shorts, chunky shoe. It looks like you thought about it even when you did not.
Jordans With Black Leggings And Puffer Jacket
Winter run club is a special kind of commitment, and I salute anyone who shows up. When it is cold, I go leggings, a puffer, and Jordans.
The puffer keeps you warm for that miserable walk from the car, and then you can peel it off if you actually warm up. In fact, I keep mine tied around my waist for exactly this reason.
Hokas With Leggings And Crew Socks
Now for the shoes that made my knees forgive me. Hokas are cushiony and a little chunky, and I have grown to love the look almost as much as the comfort.
With leggings and crew socks pulled up just a bit, they read very “I run seriously” even on days I do not. A lot of the best hoka outfits lean into that cushioned, comfort-first vibe, and I say lean all the way in.
Hokas With Running Shorts And Windbreaker
For an actual run when the weather cannot make up its mind, running shorts and a windbreaker over your Hokas is the move.
The windbreaker packs down small so you can tie it around your waist once you get going. And the shorts keep you cool. It is a very sensible outfit that also happens to look good, which is my favorite kind.
Chunky Running Shoes With Straight-Leg Jeans
Off the track, chunky sneakers and straight-leg jeans is one of those combinations that just works. The clean line of the jean against the bulky shoe is a nice balance.
I wore this to brunch last weekend and felt equal parts comfortable and put together. Some of my favorite chunky running shoe outfits are the ones that pretend they have nothing to do with running at all.
Chunky Running Shoes With Sweatpants And Tank Top
The lazy Sunday special. Sweatpants, a simple tank, and your chunky sneakers so it does not tip fully into loungewear.
Cuff the sweatpants a little at the ankle so the shoe gets its moment. That one small thing changes the entire outfit, honestly.
On Cloud Shoes With Black Leggings And Half-Zip
On Clouds are the shoe I see everywhere at my club, and after trying a pair I understand the hype. They are light and springy and go with everything.
With black leggings and a cozy half-zip, they make a really clean, sporty look. When friends ask me about on cloud shoes outfits that feel easy, I always point them to this exact one because you cannot mess it up.
On Cloud Shoes With Running Shorts
Peak summer, peak effort. Running shorts, a supportive top, and On Clouds for the actual miles.
This is stripped down and functional, and there is a certain confidence in wearing it that I did not have a year ago. Now I just throw it on and go, and that feels like its own kind of win.
Black Leggings With Oversized Denim Jacket And Sneakers
Here is where the athletic wardrobe crosses fully into everyday. Black leggings, an oversized denim jacket, and clean sneakers.
The denim jacket does all the heavy lifting. It takes something you would run in and makes it something you would meet a friend in. I keep one by the door for exactly this reason.
Black Leggings With Trench Coat And Running Shoes
And to end, my sneaky favorite. A long trench coat over leggings and running shoes sounds odd on paper, but in person it is so good.
The trench brings a little grown-up polish, and the sneakers keep it from feeling stiff. This is what I wear on the mornings when I have run club and then need to look like a functioning adult right after, no time to change.
