Secret 5: Repeat Plants for a Designer Rhythm Across the Bed
Repetition makes a bed feel bigger
One of the simplest designer garden secrets is repeating a few key plants instead of buying one of everything.
When you repeat the same compact evergreen shrubs and hydrangeas across a bed, the space feels calmer, larger, and way more intentional.
Stick to two or three core shrubs
I usually choose two hydrangea varieties and two or three evergreen partners.
That keeps the mixed shrub border cohesive, and it also makes pruning, spacing, and shopping a whole lot easier.
Use odd numbers and mirrored groupings
Clusters of three hydrangeas or repeating pairs of evergreens near an entry can create lovely landscape rhythm and repetition.
For longer foundations, I’ll mirror anchor shrubs at both ends and then echo smaller mounds through the middle.
